Hi Sharp eared people

can anyone tell me what the two chords are at the beginning of TV Reveals from Close Encouters are ?

They sound a tritone apart , maybe F# Maj ( something ) to C Maj 7 ? ( i think i hear a Bflat in there )

Sounds like Bm7 to C7 me.

I think its B-flat minor with the added 6th (B-flat, D-flat, F, G) followed by C Major dominant 7th (C, E, G, B-flat).

well the root's sound like b flat to e......and it sort of has a tritone feel to me

The first chord is not Bm7, neither Bbm6 (b = flat, m = minor). It is Db6, which can be also interpreted as an inversion of Bbm7 (Db, F, Ab, Bb), moving to C7 (C, E, G, Bb). The upper line (the melody) in the violins goes from B flat to E, and this is what gives you the "tritone" feel.

do you have the score ? just trying to emulate the sound with a string patch..i'm playing Db,Eb,Gb,Ab,Bb followed by C,E,G,Bb,C And it sort of sounds right. Plus it's such a cliche for outer space !.....

are you sure there isn't a Gb being played somewhere ?

No, I don't have the score, but I have absolute pitch. I am quite sure that there are no Eb's or Gb's in the first chord. Of course, I may be wrong, but I really do not hear them there, while I distinctly hear the F, and I think the chord that I suggested is correct. Try to play that with the upper voice going from Bb to E and I think you will agree. Keep a Bb in the bass for both chords (they are inversions... the first one can actually be considered as Bbm7). The tritones that you hear are not Gb - C, but rather the Bb's moving to E in the violins and in the choir.
