Due to the hysterical panic attacks the Moderators had a few months ago because we had a bunch of Tolkien related threads on this forum while The Hobbit was being released (No shit, Sherlock!), they decided in their infinite wisdom (excuse me while I die laughing) to reshape the Board, like Ilúvatar once reshaped the world and buried King Ar-Pharazôn and his Army when they landed at Aman in S.A. 3319.

As a result of this wanton destruction, the already rather quiet Other Topics Forum now serves very little purpose.

Do we still have need of it, or should it be merged with General Discussion?

Posted

It should be kept separate. This is a John Williams forum above all else, but he has his own corral now. General gets the related topics, like movies, TV, other soundtracks, etc.

Other is for anything else unrelated. Books, video games, and random events have limited appeal. Sob stories, smut, and other potpourri goes here.

Now that I explain it that way, books and video games have just as much entertainment relevance as movies, TV, and music that isn't film score. But if you combine general with other, you will ultimately undo the split that gave JW his own forum in the first place.

I never wanted the board reshaped. I thought making the John Williams only section was and is stupid.

I just wanted the Hobbit threads merged into one like the Potterdom thread, you know an all everything Hobbit thread, the Middle Earth tread. I thought it would be more direct and give us a cleaner look. But that made too much sense. Incidentally I was treated like shit by several members here over it, Uni, G, and a few others but when I created the Potterdom thread because of Alex's protests I don't remember treating him quite so nasty, perhaps I did and if so I am sorry Alex,

I love the other topics, especially the what are you eating,.....get in my belly

Stefan, always forward thinking by including an undecided since fence sitting is a prime ability of so many here.

Other Topics feels like Mos Eisely Space Port, after the SE.

I say merge it with GD.

All you guys have to do is use View New Content as your bookmark. Then you just see a list threads with new posts since your last login, and it makes no difference which forum they are in, its all chronological. Why does it matter which forum a thread is in anyway?

Posted

I guess you just proved Stefan's point.

Posted

Jason, just because it does not matter to you does not mean others feel the same.

Anyway, if it doesn't matter what forum a thread is on, why the fuck did you move everything around anyway?

I guess you just proved Stefan's point.

Without realising, as always....

You are not to blame! Only the Mods! Even Incanus has become guilty after the fact....

Indeed Stefan. I uphold an evil regime here. Wanton oppression at its worst really.

I actually like the current division, which keeps things nice and tidy and yes I think the Other Topics should remain as it is. There is still a lot of discussions there that do not concern the main topics (or what I assume are the main topics) of this messageboard.

Separating the Williams threads into its own forum gives them the highlight I feel they should have instead of being jumbled somewhere in the crowd of What Was the Last Film/TV Series You Have Watched /Hobbit/LotR/Star Trek/Superman threads etc. in the General Discussion.

And my experience is that it is not that complex nor difficult arrangement to follow.

Or perhaps it is on a 3G phone.

Posted

But now the line of what is fitting for GD and for OT is more blurred then ever.

If TV shows can be discussed on GD, then why not Games, or what we had for dinner? The separation, as it is no longer makes sense.

I say we have one forum for JW, and one for everything else.

The Man is gonna get you! It's only a matter of time.

It's too late for me, comrade. I have already been beaten down and reconditioned to except how things are, by way of the shitty mobile view. Now I just shrug my shoulders and look the other way.

Et tu Inky?

But...but....Don't you want a working and effective JWFan for your children?

Why don't people who don't like the mobile view just use the Desktop view while on a mobile device?

Lol. You just stick to your superhero spandex appreciation instead of giving tips.

Do videogame scores go in General Discussion or Other Topics? If they go in general discussion, why do videogames themselves go in other topics, unlike films?

Posted

The way it's been for 10+ years is:

General Discussion is for discussion of Movies, Television, and Music (including film scores, tv scores, video game scores, pop/rock, classical, etc)

Other Topics is for anything else, except politics and religion, which isn't allowed anywhere.

Most of the posts in Other Topics are about video games, books, food, technology, news stories, and forum games (Describe Your Last...., ABC Game, etc)

Creating a subforum to John Williams-specific discussion had no impact on Other Topics

Incidentally I was treated like shit by several members here over it, Uni, G, and a few others. . . .

I very deliberately abstained from using anyone's name at the time. I was objecting to the idea of having to split the forums. I can't help if you took that personally.

For my part, I've grown accustomed to the new setup, and I think it works. I'm not big on visiting so many different pages, though, which is why I never look in on the Other Topics page. I would certainly agree with the idea of merging the two. GD is where we generally discuss other topics. If I wanted to start a thread on what I'm planning to wear to RenFest this summer, I wouldn't think twice about posting on the GD page. I'm honoring the decision to delineate between subjects directly relating to John Williams and his work, and subjects not relating to him. Why we should need to further categorize those non-relating subjects is beyond me. On a John Williams board, there should be John Williams, and then Everything Else.

To be honest I tend to forget to check the JW subforum, probably clicking on it once or twice a week. Not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Posted

Uni you were quite direct in your disdain towards me. And like a good Catholic I enjoy dishing up a plate of guilt from time to time. I just used Stefan's thread as my silver platter.

As for my entrance into the forum I come to discussions, I generally will go to Other Topics first to get those out of the way. Then John Williams as there are many threads for members with musical & techical knowledge that I lack. I see and read those that interest me. Then I come to general discussions, there I read and post in the threads that interest me. I continue to hold out hope that John will score the new Pixar film, just as KM holds out hope that John will be asked by WB to rescore the last two HP films.

Renaissance Festival. (Should've used StarCon here—probably would've translated better.)

You guys bust out in Latin, French, and various Scandinavian languages all the time. I'm allowed my own occasional philological departures. (Just like you're allowed to lob a beautiful Tolkien reference as your analogy to begin a thread. Nicely done, that. (Y))

As always, no worries.

You guys are surrounded by all that history. In America, we have to dress up and pretend like we're there.

Oh, yes. Apparently we can't even waste time saying people's names, fercryinoutloud (hence "J-Lo").

In his defense it's called a Renfest around here too but I have never been to one. We have civil war reenactments too, all the time. the occasional Star Trek festival. I suppose it's a way to get the comic book crowd and other various geeks into the sun.

Yeah. Isn't your real name actually Unicalifragilisticexpialidocious?

That, too, is an abbreviated version, but yes.

Still....are you Americans too busy to spell words like Renaissance without abbreviation? ;)

My high school history teacher once showed a slide where "renaissance" had three (!) spelling errors.

As for the forum separation, I've become used to it. I don't care either way.

I always assumed Uni was short for Unirradiated. Or Unisex Hairdressers.

Asks the Dutchman too busy to tap extra buttons to navigate through three subforums.

I think you're disappointed it wasn't a party with Ren. That's ok but impractical.
