KK 3,313 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 The music actually sounds a lot like what he did for the Oscars: And why is that with each passing score, Zimmer's synths just sound worse and more fake?
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Do you know what I always wonder? What Williams would think when he heard Zimmer's music? I mean his real opinion, that maybe he couldn't speak out..That he doesn't really care either way?Well, i can't believe that a composer with his knowledge and status, doesn't have ANY opinion at all.Why should he? Obviously he stopped watching those kind of movies a long time ago (the man has taste, after all) and would just realize that the music has become simplified and pop-oriented. And still, they are worldwide blockbusters, so he likely would deduce that it's the kind of music this generation craves - why bother listening to a 70-minute onslaught of it?Well, if i was John Williams and i had written the music for Superman, and someone else years later, wrote new music for a new Superman movie, i would just listen to a few seconds just out of curiosity!
publicist 4,650 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Send him the album. Maybe he faxes back a review.
Quintus 6,495 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Who says it's a theme, or anything significant in terms of score? Typical JWFan hears 90 seconds of Zimmer: AHHH THIS SCORE IS SHIT SHIT SHIT FUCKING ASSHOLE NEEDS TO DIE! The score, what?We are talking about the music in the trailer. It's like you can't stand that some don't like it.He can't. This is the board's most ardent Zimmer supporter, after all. Which is absolutely fine. We've been over this countless times before. No I have no problem with objective responses to Zimmer's music. The board never changes which is why I've more or less oven up explaining my tongue-in-cheek reactions.Oh I know, I was just saying
Brónach 1,330 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Why should he? Obviously he stopped watching those kind of movies a long time ago (the man has taste, after all)BLAM

gkgyver 1,647 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Altogether, I don't hear anything that breaks the Zimmer formula. But, buut...it's in a MAJOR KEY THIS TIME!!!! No D minor! You sure?Sounds like it to me (I mean minor).
Brónach 1,330 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Upon hearing the trailer music in a more isolated way with some sfx I like it less than I thought. It's quite boring.
Not Mr. Big 5,011 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I was hoping for something more ethereal. Like the music used in the trailers. I guess it's still too early to tell.
Brónach 1,330 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I was hoping for something more ethereal.I had in mind something like this track (0:00 to 4:16):
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 In that short clip in the trailer Amy Adams and Henry Cavill have more chemistry together the Routh and Bosworth in the whole of Superman Returns!

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Also....Lois as a redhead!FUCK YEAH!
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Amy Adams is not a natural red head. that made me sad

It's quite boring.I'm also losing interest with repeated listens, but I'll reserve judgement until we get the whole score.Zimmer replied to someone over at Filmtracks through email or something and he confirmed that it was his music and that it was a synth demo with the drums being the only acoustic elements so far.Maybe it'll sound better for the final product?
Rachael Foley 10,162 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 it will probably be brickwalled to the nth degree on album. (seriously, the version in the trailer sounds much less compressed/limited than most RCP OST's)

Imagine you had some cool music punctuated by these adrenaline-pumping drum rythms, that'd be cool. But as it sounds in the trailer it's like a half-composed idea.Like Quint said, I hope there's cable work on this film, not just CGI flying people. Come on, Snyder seems to like hanging actors from cables.
A24 5,156 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Since it's going to be Hans Zimmer anyway, I hope the score will be emotionally in the background, like with Batman. That way the music can't really hurt the film or the scenes itself. I hardly notice the music in the Batman trilogy. In those films, music simply isn't a part of my overall movie experience (at least, it doesn't jump out at me). It's much more dangerous if the music approaches the foreground and becomes the emotional narrator telling us what to feel. Alex
publicist 4,650 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Ideally, it should do just that... But yes, this concept would be easier to embrace of Goldenthal (i.e.) would be the composer of MOS.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 post of Hans Zimmer in VI forum about the trailer music:(taken from FSM message board by a member there who posted it)Re: Man of steel TrailerPosted: Today at 6:05 pmThe music is actually from the score. A little bit recut - the tune is actually a bit longer in it's development. What you think of as synth sounds are 8 pedal steel guitars. Best organic pad sound yet The perc is the session I did at WB and Fox with 15 drummers:JR RobinsonJason BonhamJosh FreesePharrell WilliamsDanny CareySatnam RamgotraToss PanosJim KeltnerCurt BisqueraTrevor Lawrence JrMatt ChamberlainRyeland AllisonSheila EBernie DreselVinnie Colaiutawith the amazing JunkieXL conducting (There is something to be said to get a drummer who is a star of EDM and knows how to get a crowd of twohundred thousand people dancing at his shows to liontame and energise this lot!)But of course the real plus is the lack of sound effects...which gets us back to that other thread about dubbing music loudlyI'm glad you liked it!-Hz-
Jay 46,242 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 And we know for sure that that is actually Hans Zimmer why?

filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 And we know for sure that that is actually Hans Zimmer why?I had opened a thread about this, that the real Hans Zimmer is writing in a forum.http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22287&hl=%2Bzimmer+%2BforumHe is!I've talked with a person I know that he's a moderator there, and he says that it's indeed Zimmer.Other persons posting there (or moderators) are people who have worked/are working with him, and can confirm that he is the real Zimmer posting.By the way, that forum, is sort of a professional forum, which deals mostly with sample libraries, and midi sequencing techniques.

While he probably doesn't rush out to buy the latest James Newton Howard score, he probably is aware (and maybe even listen to a few bits) of what is produced by his younger colleagues within the industry. I guess it's a natural consequence of living and breathing the LA-area music world, in which film/media music still plays quite a big role.Of course we'll not ever hear from him detailed comments about it, save for the occasional complimentary nod to someone. He's too classy to shoot judgments aimed at specific works/composers.

filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 One thing is being more or less up to date with some prestigious stuff and other thing is ending up hunting down cues from the gods know what random mediocre movie.I agree, but this is not just a random movie, and EVERYONE was talking about how Zimmer will live up to his predecessor's music.
Pieter Boelen 1,032 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 The nagging about the lack of vibrant colors is getting tiresome. Directors, painters, visual artists will use the colors they think are appropriate. I don't understand why every movie needs to have the same saturated colors or the same look. It's seems to be the tic of the average JWfan. It is definitely something that I personally object to. The real world does not look like that. I understand making a film look better than the real world.I even understand the stylistic choice of making it look worse if the subject matter calls for a dark atmosphere. But in what way is Superman such a subject matter???
publicist 4,650 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 "Everyone"? I don't think the intended audience for this movie will lose sleep over different musical approaches for an old 70's movie and a current blockbuster. My point being that Williams certainly rates Zimmer's knack for coming up with a successful musical approaches higher than his inability to produce faux-Golden-Age-scores.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I think someone from here had made a version of Superman's first trailer with Williams music?I would be interested to see a similar version with this latest trailer.. @publicistI meant film music critics, people who love the old Superman film, JWFanners etc..

Koray Savas 2,260 Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I think most composers don't listen to other composers. It makes the most sense, you don't want to find yourself being influenced by other people's work too directly.
