I didn't know John Williams' son was in those songs. Learned something new again today.

Really? Joseph is one of the 'legends' of Toto. Perhaps you also didn't know that he was Simba's adult singing voice in THE LION KING?

That part I knew. But only because I had to tag the MP3 files. I never did do any research on it and I know just about exactly nothing about rock music stuff.

Then again, his parts in Toto and The Lion King are all I know about him. Has he done anything else of interest?

Not much. He wrote "Lapti Nek" for his father's RETURN OF THE JEDI, plus some other source cues for the same film.

He's done a bunch of solo albums and session work, but nothing I've paid particular attention to.

He's also tried his hands at scoring -- albeit briefly -- among other things the main theme for the series MIRACLES:

if you look at the gorfaine-schwarz agency, i think it says he worked in AI, attack of the clones... and some other william scores.

But man, how mean to 'mock' your father that way in public...i mean WE all do, but not in TV :P

Probably most people dindt even got that he was imitating his father's voice and way of speaking :P

True, he did a little work on some of his father's scores (the "pop bits"). Forgot about that.

Not to forget Africa from the same album (not featured in the video). Those were before Williams' time though.

That was mildly funny. Joseph was obviously trying to retain his tough Toto street cred by impersonating John in that condescending voice.

Yes, I think he did the techno bit in Minority Report too.

Doesnt sound bad at all. The oboe solo even reminds me of dad.

Africa was in the video

Go to 2:00. It begins playing as Joe is impersonating his dad, and then they show the music video. It plays until 2:30

FilmNet? That channel used to show hardcore porn after the watershed! My dad recalibrated our satellite tv dish especially! Circa 1992-93.

(He didn't know me and my mates figured that out...)

Was he with Toto when they scored Dune? (I would think that would count as some film scoring experience.)

No, Joseph joined in 1986, two years after the film was released.

Well, perhaps he composed the music for the Pre-Crime commercial.

Posted

Don't think so. To me, it sounds, and "feels" like JW. The only bit of extra "original" music was by Paul Haslinger (ex-Tangerine Dream).

I agree. The Pre-Crime commercial music has JW finger prints all over it. Especially the cyclical motif repeating in the middle of the piece is something that seems to have been stuck in his head through many scores and other pieces.

Posted

I agree--I would love to hear an orchestral expansion of the piece actually, sounds like it could be a kick ass action cue.

Posted

Actually the piece itself would make a killer ring tone.

maybe he is responsible for playing the synth cues, or 'composing' them in the commputer....while john Williams has written the notes.

No, that was just a rumor. He did do the source cue for Dex's diner in AOTC though.

Because he got kicked out after two years?

Well, he returned in 2010, and is the current lead singer. Also, he wasn't kicked out, but left due to personal problems at the time (the late 80s was a very turbulent time for the Williams family -- John had his back problems all through 1988, Jennifer had a stroke in 1989 and Mark was struggling with addiction issues around this time).

On Wikipedia it says 2010 - 2019, but maybe it's just not updated.

Yes, probably not updated. I'm not aware that he has left the band (again).

he didn't leave - toto doesn't exist anymore ;-)

Just checked Wiki, and it seems they decided to take "an extended hiatus" after their 40th anniversary tour last year. Must have missed that piece of news. I guess that means they are open to getting back together again when the time feels right. Heck, at the moment every single band in the world is on an extended hiatus. ;)

I believe that has something to do with Jeff Porcaro's widow suing them and banning them from using the name toto - it's a long story (from what I heard) but basically, they can no longer perform under that name... nothing official - but Lukather said something like that when he announced their last gig. He didn't want to elaborate because toto apparently lost the case in court

I'm curious about more family details. It is interesting. Thanks

Well, John Williams' back problems forced him to take a year off from many conducting gigs in 1988. He seems to have managed THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST (his only film score that year), but it's a very low-key score to begin with. Of his four short concert pieces that premiered this year, "Fanfare for Ten-Year-Olds" was not conducted by him, and neither was "Fanfare for Michael Dukakis". Not sure about "Olympic Spirit" (more of a TV theme than a concert piece) and "To Lenny! To Lenny!" (aka "For New York"), and who conducted them.

Mark's addiction problems in this period have been mentioned in interviews a few times over the years (among others, by his son Lionel), but details are rare, as is information on the timeframe.

Jennifer's stroke is more documented. She suffered the ailment while giving birth to her second child, Ethan, in 1989. She eventually recovered completely, but her struggles were actually turned into a TV movie called A TIME TO HEAL (1994), scored by her husband at the time, Jay Gruska.

Joseph's problems, the ones that caused him to leave Toto temporarily, are unknown at this time (at least to me).

In either case, it was a tough time for all of them.

Didn't he ghostwrite The Last Crusade while JW was recovering?

Williams' the second back problems were during recording Jurassic Park or not? When he fell in the studio. I read it here on the website. I do not know where. Thanks for this. Williams' family is not on the tabloid newspaper and this is really instructive

A TIME TO HEAL page on Wiki deserves an update!

It does, yes. I saw the film ages ago, on a CD-R, but it's on Youtube in its entirety now, for those interested. They've changed the last names of the characters, but kept the real first names of the family (Jenny, Jay, Barbara).
