Heard a couple of cues from Elfman's Hitchcock on the radio driving home from work. Meh.

First Blood and The Shadow.

Karol

Great stuff. First Blood is somehow much more effective action scoring than most modern fare even though it isn't cranked up full of notes. The economy of the score is admirable and effective.

And the Shadow is a fun score with all its different impulses.

Krull - La-La Land Limited Edition

Crisp sound, and the music is rapturously overdone. It's the perfect embodiment of 1980s fantasy scores, and one of Horner's best signature works. The main theme is so full of adventure and wonder, and the love theme is exquisite.

Excellent choice, Alice!

You guys have radio stations that play film score cues? That's awesome!

Yes, there is a lot of film music played on Classic FM and places like that mixed with concert music.

Judge Dredd and Predator 2 for me.

Captain America: The First Avenger - Alan Silvestri

I was actually listening to that too, earlier today. Strangely, it just doesn't grab my attention the way it did when I first listened to it. It's still wonderful, but it's just not as fresh or engaging like Krull or his two Disney scores in that same period.

I'm also listening to this:

I have always preferred ST:III to II (and maybe even Krull)

As much as I love Khan, this one is better.

I'm now listening to some portions of John Barry's The Black Hole. It's great! Didn't know Barry ever used a blaster beam. Might buy the Intrada album.

Besides, it was a Don Davis day - The Matrix and Jurassic Park 3.

And Star Trek VI as well.

Jurassic Park 3 is quite accomplished but Davis doesn't quite reach the same effortless orchestrations that make Williams' JP scores such classics. And his action music is so fervent and aggressive it can become a bit head ache inducing after a while. It is all crashing, chirping, blaring and gnashing but where Williams makes his music highly listenable Davis beats the listener into submission. Still the score has its moments and I like the way he treats JW's theme for the most part.

I don't think he aimed to emulate Williams all that much. It's Davis in his Matrix mode with some nods to Williams. I can understand why people don't like it, but for me it's noisy and colorful fun.

He does nod to Williams' style somewhat ( I guess it was the requirement to get the job) but the score sounds largely like Davis in my opinion in good as it does in the bad.

Actually listening to scores today on Spotify instead of pop/rock music!

John Williams - Jurassic Park (20th Anniversary release)

You know what? Williams arrangement for the original OST is not that good. For one thing, you have the brilliant concert arrangement of the brilliant main theme as track 2, which is all well and good. But then 2 tracks later, you have the exact same performance again in Track 4. Then just 3 tracks later, you have a very similar arrangement (no choir) playing in track 7, and then the theme is pretty much absent for the entire second half of the OST. Other than that, the OST arrangement does follow a nice flow musically, and man, "T-Rex Rescue and Finale" remains one of my absolute favorite tracks on any CD of all time. Oh, and the bonus tracks at the end are all awesome music, but they don't feel like anything BUT bonus tracks when presented as such. How I wish instead we got a complete and chronological release. Maybe someday.

Michael Giacchino - Medal of Honor

Wasn't sure what other film music was even on spotify so I typed in Giacchino's name and instantly realized I had not listened to his MOH scores in a long time! I never got into these scores as so many of you here have, probably because I got into them so late (I never got into Giacchino at all until around LOST time). Definitely some good get your blood pumping music here, made me program like a maniac this morning!

Joe Kraemer - Jack Reacher

My second listen, and not a good choice. Mostly because since I don't know the score that well yet and a lot of it is on the quiet side, it was difficult to get into in these conditions (listening on tiny computer speakers at an office). But man, that Finale Cue still packs a punch! The spotify version had a bonus track not on the CD, but it's just a combination of the main and end titles.

Can't wait to see the film, which I will hopefully do real soon.

I need to take a good listen of this score as I have read good things about it. I somehow missed this score when it first came out and didn't take but a cursory listen a while back.

you definitely should, inky! it actually took some time for me to get into it.

It's excellent.

is it perhaps even your favorite newman score?

The Five Sacred Trees by John Williams: Lovely.

Treesong by John Williams: Mesmerizing.

The Oboe Concerto by John Williams: I can't get enough of this piece. Snippets from this have been playing in my head for several days. Definitely among my favourite JW concertos.

Listened to that as well. It is definitely a "warmer" sound to that we usually associate with Williams's concert music. More like his film works. The only other piece that comes close to this sound would be Heartwood. They don't sound alike, of course, but remind me the most of his main body of work.

The Hole by Javier Navarrete: Listen to this very often. One of the best albums released this year so far, no question in my mind. Not the kind of horror score you hear a lot these days.

Listening to LOST season 1 right now.

Some of the very best themes of the 2000s are Giacchino's.

Cutthroat Island

As exhausting as the complete score might be, I can't deny it is an impressively well crafted piece of film music. Not terribly original or fresh, but incredibly consistent in its development and quality. And while the original album contained most (if not all) major highlights the long album reveals a more nuanced structure. 145 minutes is a bit long for this type of music, but not as relentless as the 70-minute program.

Iron Man 3 by Brian Tyler

I was impressed by this - it was in fact better than most modern action scoring. It was RCP-ish at times, but not all the time. I'll be sure to listen again after I see the movie. One thing though - the final track is AWESOME! One of the best tracks of 2013 easily! Reminds me of The Incredibles a bit

Cloverfield by Michael Giacchino

Still one of my favorite pieces of music of recent years. So much fun

Up by Michael Giacchino

You know, the beginning and ending of this score is lovely, but I find the action music in the middle to not be among GIacchino's best. I might make a 20 minute playlist of the best bits for when I'm in the mood for this score

SimCity by Chris Tilton

This was great! Thoroughly impressed with this score. Fun to listen to while working

Iron Man 3 is not what I would call a great score, but far far better than the previous two. It has a certain sense of chutzpah which is very suitable for Tony Stark. It's perfectly embodied in the main theme actually and RC chords are a big part of that. In any case, it's the best guilty pleasure album of 2013 so far. Even I'm not sure what that last sentence was supposed to mean. On a side note: Dies Irae seems to be mostly absent from the album.

Jack the Giant Slayer is still holding up. It has some really solid orchestrations and I rather enjoy it as a whole. What bothers me is a few instances of temp track love. And given that Ottman himself is an editor, he doesn't have as much of an excuse here. Also, action writing is probably the weakest part of the score. Which doesn't change the fact it's a job well done.

In any case, 2013 is a pretty good year so far. For the blockbuster scores, that is.

IN DREAMS

Pure Goldenthal zaniness: per his self-declared motto composition as collision, EG concocts weird electronic acid collages, traces of his Wagnerian boldness, sax improvisation over Stravinsky rhythms and soulful adagios, everything served with immaculate musical precision. A composer Hollywood should pay a king's ransom.

I honestly never connected with that particular Giacchino score. I should take a few more listens to see if time has done its job.

Aside from Married Life, I couldn't really connect with the score on album. But it works brilliantly in film.

Having heard the new Star Trek samples, I like some of what I'm hearing, but I'm starting to realize that I don't like Giacchino's action sound very much.

While not because of lack of character, but still is his weakest spot.

Listened to Giacchino's Star Trek. It's very uneven. Some of best bits are actually are from those seemingly insignificant underscore tracks - the parts right after the opening main theme statement, Jehosafats, the erhu statement of Nero's theme... All the s-f music, if you will. Which is not so much the focus of this music (or film, for that matter), which is a great shame. The action music is mostly bland. Oh and I love That New Car Smell and the first part of end credits (right to the point when Spock's theme ends). And I also like the Enterprise crew ostinato that seems to be something that really binds the score together.

I never said I love Hugo. On the contrary I have mentioned numerous times that I can't get into that score either.
