I always hope that a movie will affect me on a deeper level. Not that I'm expecting this from an Iron Man movie, of course. However, knowing that it's just "a fun movie" doesn't make me run to the theater.

I thought we were talking about Iron Man 3.

I'm not the target audience. Remember, I'm the one from JWfan who prefers Hulk over The Incredible Hulk.

That kind of requierement reduces the films one can go see to a few in all the history of cinema. With the few depending on the person.

Perhaps for you but to me are more than just "a few". Even if there are just a few, it wouldn't stop me from wanting it.

Well, it depends on what that deeper level is.

I know some of my wanted "deeper levels" are a bit ignored by cinema so far.

You're not the only one, I still regard it as easily the best movie about a Marvel character

Yeah sure. But you've watched The Avengers and enjoyed it, if I remember correctly.

I don't spend my time counting down seconds to the release of the next Marvel film. But if I need something to cheer me up or entertain for two hours Iron Man 3 might be the best thing around at the moment. Not what I want from films, but even good entertainment is a rare thing. I think no one here ever said it is special.

Yes, like I wrote (but it seems to be deleted now), I still prefer the 'fun' of The Avengers over the flatliners Marvel used to produce. Even though I enjoyed The Avengers, the experience is so shallow that it doesn't make for lasting impressions.

Alex - wondering if Disney bought JWfan

Not sure what's so unusual about it tbh; there's probably more here prefer the Ang Lee version over the other one, myself included.

I want a Ruffalo Hulk movie!

Could have big potential.

I imagine it kinda like John Carter of Mars, with Bruce Banner instead of John Carter.

We watched Ant Lee's Hulk the other day. What a complete piece of shit. It's horrible. Lee is a fucking retard for his direction. Clearly he sat in corner drooling.

I think the original Iron Man is the only superhero movie I actually like and rewatch from time to time.

Everything else is dull. Including Ang Lee's no better or worse than any other superhero movie effort. Including Nolan's Batman. Tim Burton's Batman. Original Superman.

If you like ang Lee's mess that isn't maturity, it's poor taste ;)

Stefan I enjoyed Iron Man 3 very much. Much more than the Avengers. Loved the Manderin. The ending was the film's only real weak point.

We may see Mud later this afternoon which was filmed here in Arkansas nearby.

What do you mean? I thought the ending was very satisfying.

I didn't quite get what happened.

So I will ask: what happened? No more Iron Man [movies]?

Well,

Robert Downey Jr's contract expires with this film. I guess this ends Iron Man trilogy and Phase 1 of the Marvel movies. Whatever follows is up to lawyers and agents now. But that's not why I liked that. At least this movie has an ending and is somewhat about a character. Not a setup for another movie or anything like that. That's why the post-credit scene is so great.

So you quite liked it then?

I agree with Joe, the ending is a bit underwelming.

The film also misses a "hero shot" its good that Downey Jr is out of the suit most of the film, but at some point you need a cool shot of him as Iron Man.

The new suit looked dull compared to the old one btw.

I know but it more feels like an epilogue to Phase 1.

I was disheartened to see what the visual effects people did to my place of work in post-production in Iron Man 3! ;)

Ah, now I recognize the old JWfan again!

Watched Insidious, because I'd been repeatedly told over the years that it's "really scary" and "a gem of a horror".

1 out of 5. Or as an RT critic put it: "About as subtle as a fart at a séance." God awful musical score on it too. Definitely one of the worst horror movies in recent memory.

I saw Olympus Has Fallen, basically a mix between Die Hard and generic Americana movies. There was a recurring trumpet solo that was very clearly ripped from JW's war theme (War Horse, Lincoln, etc).

Bit late on this, but I saw it last week and I really noticed that trumpet solo, although it sounded to me more like a Crimson Tide ripoff. Liked some of the action cues although this is one of Morris' Zimmer-clone scores - the main theme is basically Pearl Harbour with a slightly changed chord sequence at the end. I put this together last week in a moment of reminiscence of various patriotic American scores that I remembered - the first two though are just identical :P

Loved the Manderin.

Which one?

I don't get your question.

We saw Mud with Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Paulson(one of my very favorite actresses), Michael Shannon ( Zod in Man of Steel), and the great Sam Shepard, and the reliable Joe Don Baker. It was filled in central eastern Arkansas near the Mississippi River. It is a very interesting movie, coming of age story. It's in serious need of editing but it's very thrilling towards the end and a satisfying conclusion.

Just watched Zemeckis's Beowulf for the first time. The film was decently enjoyable, for what it is. The circa-2007 mocap is usually less than convincing, though there are a few shots where the humanity really does shine through the characters' eyes.

Perhaps oddly enough, the thing that's sticking with me most of all is the integration of "A Hero Comes Home" into the film. I was already familiar with the score's main theme, which veers a bit too close to Zimmer territory, IMO. But this other song/theme was new to me, and honestly, I'm a bit enchanted by it. It helps that it's poignantly introduced by a character portrayed by Robin Wright - I've always had kind of a thing for her. But the melody itself really is quite sweet, and while its orchestral arrangements can come across as a bit cheesy at times, it's the part of the film that seems to have made the greatest impression on me.

The first part of Beowulf is really good, even though it looks fairly odd.
