It's an action movie?

no it's a film about life and death and survival, with two main principles with limited life support played in supposedly real time.

I hope so, I don't want an action movie in space.

That's where Die Hard 6 will be set.

Yippie kay yay, spaceman.

That is the single coolest thing my eyes have witnessed in a while.

I love the imagery that Cuarón is using, the to current aeronautic technology (is that a desintegrating Soyuz or something else?) and the looks of low Earth orbit.

And the free fall mayhem is obviously cooler than anything in most other films set in space. ;)

Poor space station

Agreed with everything Chaac said.

The film looks gorgeous visually. And it looks like there'll be some real kickass sequences! This is probably my most anticipated film of the year, and this trailer did not disappoint!

That looks awesome. I might have to see that in IMAX.

I hope Sandra Bullock dies in those first 17 minutes.

I chatted with someone who watched that first shot at a screening a long time ago and he said it was the best visual effect he'd seen. Or maybe it was the best 3D at the time. i don't remember.

Are you joking? It's the other way around dude

Movie looks great so far!

Clooney is the one who dies in the opening 17 minutes, and the rest of the movie is just Sandra Bullock.

Did you not watch the trailer?

There sure is a lot of sound in space. Who knew?

It's more of a teaser but again ... I'm not teased at all.

My impression was, it looked realistic but at the same time the realism is completely undone by those whooshy sounds. Does the whole movie take place in the vacuum of space? If it's just this scene, then yes, I would've preferred no sound other than the voices. Now it's just like any other accident. They should use the fact that it takes place in space. Set it apart by using the conditions and circumstances! Make me feel how it truly would be ... how they are truly experiencing it.

The Gravity trailer is now up:

Looks pretty good.

FYI, the music heard at the beginning is Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel Im Spiegel"

That's exactly what the film seems to want to do. Do you realize most sounds in the trailer are the typical dumb wooshy sound effects they add to most trailers, right?

I think we could hear everything from inside the suits (voices, breathing, hits, bumps, etc), and anything listenable inside the spacecraft (the shuttle, the Soyuz and the space station). When you're inside something in a vacuum without touching anything else, everything is quite noisy becuse there's no place to transmit the sound to. Spaceships seem to be loud inside.

And also music, there's a score by some new guy.

I'm not sure at what height falling into Earth's atmosphere you can start hearing sounds outside. The climax (or what looks like the climax from the trailer) could play with this.

I hate unjustified sounds in space in films. Like in Alien, surely one of the worst films ever to add "space sounds" to. It takes away from the setting.

I hate movies with soundtracks. Who walks around all day with all that music playing all the time for the dramatic moments? How realistic is that?

Oh wait, I forgot what forum this is.

Sometimes I think this.

I know a score isn't supposed to be sounding in universe, but still. If I can accept subjetive sound (as in, listening to the inside of a spacesuit while looking at it from the outside), I could also accept music that has a narrative purpose and isn't meant to be actually there.

Even though it's weird when you think about it. Depends on your perspective.

perhaps you should discuss that with Jessica Tate.

I dunno, almost every movie has them whooshy sounds. But now that you mention it, they did sound kind of trailer-ish. Anyway, I secretly hope it's one of those movies that sorta fails at the box-office because it's actually a cerebral film and not an action flick. And who knows, maybe Sandra Bullock astonishes audiences and critics with a surprising and magnificent offbeat role.

The test audience people said she was very good in it. (They saw a half done film with cables here and there and many unrendered blocky things. It must be hilarious to watch.)

I hope it smashes the box office and we more films like it seems to be, action or not.

Chaac-who 's tried to write cerebral action stuff.

I just watched the trailer for Gravity. Looks intriguing, more so since I found out Cuaron has directed it. Fingers crossed, eh.

Also, the piano and violin music for those interested is from the outstanding BBC documentary Auschwitz: The Nazis and the Final Solution. One of the most haunting pieces in recent memory it is.

Lee - about to watch Gattaca for the first time. Hopes it's futuristic vision isn't dated.

Is that why it has a German name? Funny, the piece is already embedded in my brain as "space music".

It originally underscored the dreadful findings of what happened in that camp.

The piece is Arvo Pärt's Spiegel Im Spiegel, which has been used in a number of films, documentaries and television movies.

Thank you! I searched for its name years ago after watching the documentary, to no avail. In fact I even asked here if anyone knew, but nobody was forthcoming back then.

lol, Maurizio already posted the name of that piece and the youtube clip on the previous page, after the trailer was posted.

Actually, Maurizio posted this link on the previous page.

EDIT: Haha now I'm posting a redundant information.

Has this been discussed? Looks pretty damn good...

It seems Greengrass found a way to tell a modern pirate movie properly. It even has some nods to the old-school pirates, like when the ladder reaches Phillips boat. Reminded me just a tiny bit of A High Wind in Jamaica.

I just wish Powell was scoring it. Looks it could have brought him some great possibilities.

Maybe I should watch that film when it comes out, considering it is basically about my job.

It looks hilariously action-packed. And I'm not at all convinced on the realism of that RADAR.

And altering course to avoid being boarded with a big container vessel when the small boat is already alongside?

Not bloody likely!

Posted

Yeah, Hollywood making a film about something one happens to understand tends to get that kind of reaction.

I'll be interested to see if they manage to get up to Poseidon or Speed 2 levels of hilarity.

Those are just soooo wrong I still cannot believe it. ROTFLMAO

(Actually, the old The Poseidon Adventure is still somewhat plausible. At least it's not WAAAAY out there. But the new one is!)

I didn't even know he was doing another. For some reason I LOVED Clerks 2, so this is good news, yay

He very recently decided to write it. Hit Somebody was going to be his last film, but now that's going to be a TV miniseries instead and Clerks III will be his last film.
