I might finally get the Hitchcock box. It's the cheapest it has been.

Is that Laura Dern?

Yes.

You would not know it from jurassic park, but dern can be dead sexy.

She was dead sexy in JURASSIC PARK, too.

The Sheltering Sky ... for those who want it ... only available in France (Region B).

I would love a Bertolluci trilogy:

Last emperor - Sheltering Sky- Little Buddha

Those films have great atmosphere!!

Posted

Those three are the Bertolucci - Stararo - Sakamoto triptych. The Last Emperor is my favorite. I was however severely disappointed with Little Buddha.

I still loved the Buddha Story parts.(and the music very much)

I hope it hits Bluray soon. There is a Japanese one, but it's expensive.

By the way, the best Bluray release of the last Emperor is again a Japanese one, which keeps the 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

The Criterion one and other Europeans are cropped, according to the cinematographer's wishes.

Also the Japanese release includes an extended TV version.

Thanks for the tip. I bought the European version and find it to be unwatchable.

Yeah I just bought it. $7 per movie.

Ordered too!!

Along with this:

I'm so thrilled and can't wait!

Unfortunately it'll take one month or more to get here..

I don't know yet how to watch the films.

In chronological order, or in order of preference! :biglaugh:

Be careful, Richard, I just find out that the French Blu-ray has 'forced subtitles'!

Apparently there's also a Japanese Blu-ray ...

But the cover is not as nice as the French release.

The Great Escape is for sale on Amazon for $5.99 (70% off)

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BN3DUVE

I almost insta-bought it, but then I read online that the image is too dark, and some HDTV airings have been better and brighter.

Anybody know any more about this?

It looked extremely good in my eyes. I couldn't understand the fuss about the image!

Are you serious? In that link, it shows the dark blu ray image, and when I move my mouse over it, it becomes MUCH brighter when it shows the DVD version image!

Here's another comparison:

I can't see the photos you linked.

The much brighter picture of the DVD seems unnatural to me.

You can see here in the faces (especially on the person on the right), that the brightness is a bit too much!

I watched the Bluray, and i thought it was excellent!

Of course I hadn't seen the film again.

Maybe if i was accustomed to the brightness of the DVD I would mind? I don't know...

Yup, great film, an all time classic. I definitely want to own it on blu (I own the DVD currently)

I own the DVD but won't rebuy it. I haven't watched it for years.

Alex, I saw Empire Of The Sun on Blu here for just 7 Euro. Hows the quality on that one?

I know you asked Alex, but thought to step in.

The quality according to this review here is superb! And it shows from the screenshots too.

I love this fim! It's in my "to buy" list.

Since I am buying some steelbooks of favourite films, I'd love a steelbook of this.

It's like 5 Euro in my country. I actually bought the UK version (which even has Dutch subtitles) but I never checked the image quality. I don't suppose it's been restored like Jaws, right?

Posted

Not even inserted the disc into the player, I'm afraid. Do you want me to check it right now?

Posted

No, I don't know why. Do you want me to check the IQ right now?

Posted

It looks good, Steef. Damn, the scene where Jamie and his parents are driving through the crowded streets of Shanghai, all wearing their costumes for the costume party, is so amazing. The angelic music of Wiliams is almost in contrast with the images. Empire Of The Sun is really an 'environment' film.

Better to check the discs when you buy them, to see if everything is good.

You won't be able to replace it after a year or 2 after your purchase if you have a defective disc.

This happened to me once in an anime series boxset. It had 5 DVDs, and after 2 years that I sat down to watch the series, I realized that disc 2 didn't play at all!

I emailed the shop, but no reply, and shortly afterwards it closed.

Ok, buying this tommorow on your advise. I've never seen the film. Well bits and pieces in the 90's. Sadly I already know the ending

With Empire Of The Sun, it's the journey that matters the most.

I'm really not a steelbook fetishist. I own a few steelbook blu's, but thats pretty much incidental. Certainly would not pay extra for a steelbook.

Also not nearly as interested in special features like making of docu's etc etc. In the end most of them are pretty generic

You're right. Somehow checking the discs is no longer a habit of mine.

On a sidenote: the digibook looks great too.

But I remember there aren't many fans of digibooks here either.

Whats the difference, really?

One is a digibook and the other a steelbook? I regretted my steelbook of Chinatown.
