A24 5,155 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 The Sheltering Sky ... for those who want it ... only available in France (Region B).Alex
filmmusic 3,269 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I would love a Bertolluci trilogy:Last emperor - Sheltering Sky- Little BuddhaThose films have great atmosphere!!
A24 5,155 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Those three are the Bertolucci - Stararo - Sakamoto triptych. The Last Emperor is my favorite. I was however severely disappointed with Little Buddha. Alex
filmmusic 3,269 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I was however severely disappointed with Little Buddha.AlexI still loved the Buddha Story parts.(and the music very much)I hope it hits Bluray soon. There is a Japanese one, but it's expensive.By the way, the best Bluray release of the last Emperor is again a Japanese one, which keeps the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The Criterion one and other Europeans are cropped, according to the cinematographer's wishes. Also the Japanese release includes an extended TV version.
A24 5,155 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Thanks for the tip. I bought the European version and find it to be unwatchable.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Yeah I just bought it. $7 per movie.Ordered too!!Along with this:http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Fleischer-Classics-Featuring-Gullivers-Travels-Blu-ray/82468/I'm so thrilled and can't wait!Unfortunately it'll take one month or more to get here..I don't know yet how to watch the films. In chronological order, or in order of preference!
Jay 46,241 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Watch in order of the hotness of the leading ladies
Naïve Old Fart 13,020 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 The Sheltering Sky ... for those who want it ... only available in France (Region B).AlexThanks for the tip, Alex: yes, I do want it.
A24 5,155 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Be careful, Richard, I just find out that the French Blu-ray has 'forced subtitles'!Apparently there's also a Japanese Blu-ray ...But the cover is not as nice as the French release.Alex
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 The Wind and the lion (with the excellent Goldsmith score) is coming in Bluray from Warner Archive Collection. No street date announced yet.
Jay 46,241 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 The Great Escape is for sale on Amazon for $5.99 (70% off)http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BN3DUVEI almost insta-bought it, but then I read online that the image is too dark, and some HDTV airings have been better and brighter.Anybody know any more about this?

I couldn't understand the fuss about the image!http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=2391&disc2=2390&cap1=22053&cap2=22045&art=full&image=0&hd_multiID=490&action=1&lossless=#vergleich
Jay 46,241 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Are you serious? In that link, it shows the dark blu ray image, and when I move my mouse over it, it becomes MUCH brighter when it shows the DVD version image! Here's another comparison:HDTV airing:Bluray:
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I can't see the photos you linked. The much brighter picture of the DVD seems unnatural to me.You can see here in the faces (especially on the person on the right), that the brightness is a bit too much!http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=2391&disc2=2390&cap1=22055&cap2=22047&art=full&image=2&hd_multiID=490&action=1&lossless=#vergleichI watched the Bluray, and i thought it was excellent!Of course I hadn't seen the film again.Maybe if i was accustomed to the brightness of the DVD I would mind? I don't know...
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Such an overrated film!Hmmmm... I loved it!It had so much suspense!!
Jay 46,241 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Yup, great film, an all time classic. I definitely want to own it on blu (I own the DVD currently)
Wojo 2,458 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I own the DVD but won't rebuy it. I haven't watched it for years.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Alex, I saw Empire Of The Sun on Blu here for just 7 Euro. Hows the quality on that one?
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Alex, I saw Empire Of The Sun on Blu here for just 7 Euro. Hows the quality on that one?I know you asked Alex, but thought to step in.The quality according to this review here is superb! And it shows from the screenshots too.http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Empire-of-the-Sun-Blu-ray/39522/#Reviewhttp://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=1697&disc2=1698&cap1=15983&cap2=15995&art=full&image=0&hd_multiID=704&action=1&lossless=#vergleichI love this fim! It's in my "to buy" list.Since I am buying some steelbooks of favourite films, I'd love a steelbook of this.
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Alex, I saw Empire Of The Sun on Blu here for just 7 Euro. Hows the quality on that one? It's like 5 Euro in my country. I actually bought the UK version (which even has Dutch subtitles) but I never checked the image quality. I don't suppose it's been restored like Jaws, right?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 You havent watched it yet?
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Not even inserted the disc into the player, I'm afraid. Do you want me to check it right now?
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 No, I don't know why. Do you want me to check the IQ right now?
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 It looks good, Steef. Damn, the scene where Jamie and his parents are driving through the crowded streets of Shanghai, all wearing their costumes for the costume party, is so amazing. The angelic music of Wiliams is almost in contrast with the images. Empire Of The Sun is really an 'environment' film.Alex
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Ok, buying this tommorow on your advise. I've never seen the film. Well bits and pieces in the 90's. Sadly I already know the ending
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Not even inserted the disc into the player, I'm afraid. Do you want me to check it right now?Better to check the discs when you buy them, to see if everything is good. You won't be able to replace it after a year or 2 after your purchase if you have a defective disc. This happened to me once in an anime series boxset. It had 5 DVDs, and after 2 years that I sat down to watch the series, I realized that disc 2 didn't play at all!I emailed the shop, but no reply, and shortly afterwards it closed.
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Ok, buying this tommorow on your advise. I've never seen the film. Well bits and pieces in the 90's. Sadly I already know the ending With Empire Of The Sun, it's the journey that matters the most.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I love this fim! It's in my "to buy" list.Since I am buying some steelbooks of favourite films, I'd love a steelbook of this.I'm really not a steelbook fetishist. I own a few steelbook blu's, but thats pretty much incidental. Certainly would not pay extra for a steelbook. Also not nearly as interested in special features like making of docu's etc etc. In the end most of them are pretty genericOk, buying this tommorow on your advise. I've never seen the film. Well bits and pieces in the 90's. Sadly I already know the ending With Empire Of The Sun, it's the journey that matters the most.Like Blade Runner?
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Not even inserted the disc into the player, I'm afraid. Do you want me to check it right now?Better to check the discs when you buy them, to see if everything is good. You won't be able to replace it after a year or 2 after your purchase if you have a defective disc. You're right. Somehow checking the discs is no longer a habit of mine.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 the only defect disc I bought was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy on Blu. It plays fine, but the image quality keeps fluctuating. Lots of disturbance
filmmusic 3,269 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 On a sidenote: the digibook looks great too.But I remember there aren't many fans of digibooks here either.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I'm not against them. But really in the end all I care about is the movie.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Digibooks are awesome. Not a huge fan of steelbooks.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Whats the difference, really?
Wojo 2,458 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Steelbooks don't burn as neatly when you toss them in the fire.
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 The standard blue case is fine. Black is fine too.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Not fussy about exterior, like me! We care about what resides within, Alex.
A24 5,155 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 It don't matter if you're black or white. - Michael Jackson
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 And he would know, he's been both!
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Whats the difference, really? One is a digibook and the other a steelbook? I regretted my steelbook of Chinatown.
