No I am just tired of seeing the most hare brained PR material for films. You can cook any regular dish and name it Ori's Boiled Eggs or Bombur's Majestic Birthday Cake Surprise and hey presto, Middle Earth food. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Does anyone know if they built anything in Kaitoke Park this time or was Rivendell all studio this time?

yeah, but this recipe is from the hobbit, so it can't be.

I think shallow water cannot produce that kind of perfect-specular reflection.

lets see how it looks in motion, but i think it does not look very realistic.

It is obviously magical Elvish CGI water of Rivendell. You didn't read about that in the LotR Appendices? ;)

The part over the stairs is far too exagerated, I think.

1) I'm sure the recipes don't feature in the movie.

2) The trailer starts off with old Bilbo telling Frodo about his adventure. Come to think of it, Tolkien's own most elaborate telling of a large chunk of the story is actually set in Minas Tirith after the War of the Ring. Perhaps Bombur had Gimli collect recipes and wrote them down at the beginning of the fourth age.

hey, as long as he does it like STTMP/ST:V goldsmith... or to PJ's old adage: "If you can use a real element, use it wherever/whenever possible!!"

I think if people didn't know it is a special effect, they wouldn't complain.

If you know it only can be CGI, you are already biased and are quicker in saying that it looks like CGI.

Huh?Of course it can, why not?

gkgyver is sadly 'colorblind' to any kind of flaw in these films.

I'm ust glad i'm not the only one noticing so we dont end in a one-to-one argument.

In this shot there are elements that scream CGI. And i dont know if it's all CGI or not. I doubt it is.

*with shallow water, i meant the stairs part, like chaac noticed.

It's also unlikely the water would be so still (i think there are a pir of leaves floating there...) I remember rivendell with a lot of waterfalls and loads of leaves everywere. It could still be an isolated pond in a very quiet place in the city so it is not important, as long as in motion, it looks like real water.

Whatever. It is still nonsense that shallow water like the one at the stairs should not be able to reflect it this way.

It Reminds me of photos from Norway or Sweden where absolutely still lakes look like that.

And while we are playing the blame game, at least I am not determined to belittle anything about these films.

in a panoramic photograph of a swedish lake, i doubt that you can see the shores and therefore the reflection is created in deeper water.

And it's not nonsense, in shallow water, i think the reflection does not reflect the color of the things.... try it in your house... I just looked at a glass of water and no reflection was visible.

And while we are playing the blame game, at least I am not determined to belittle anything about these films.

it may look like that, but there have been a bunch of photos i have not comente. And i love gandalf the grey.

The shot looks nice. But that tree trunk is incredibly fake and bothersome. You'd expect more attention to that kind of stuff from the folks at WETA. Chaac was also right about the staircase, which is too exaggerated.

I still like it though.

Also, there is always the possibility the shot isn't finished. Remember all the last minute things happening on Return of the King.

Even though, of course, using real sets is always the better option.

Very likely. I hope thats the case.

Some of these images look absolutely stunning, some of them are pretty good, and one makes me want to kill myself (I'm looking at you Radagast).

But looking at all these shots, one thing is very clear. The visual style of this film will be so incredibly different to that of LotR. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean I'm looking at some of these super HD shots of Gollum or Thorin and the focus shots of Gandalf and I'm thinking to myself, "Wow, you would never see something like in the old Lord of the Rings". Don't get me wrong, these shots look great. But the old LotR visual style is radically different in the way it portrayed escapism and it was very easy to let Middle-Earth sink into you in a cinematic sense. I'm a bit worried that this break of continuity in a visual sense might be a tad off-putting while watching the film. I don't know what it is, but part of me wonders if this different visual direction might be a bit unsettling. Its probably because of how incredibly digital these new shots look. Only time will tell how this will play out for the film.

Again, I could just be blabbering. I'm exhausted and on the brink of collapse, so I'm not sure if you can make any sense of what I just said.

Posted

Out of curiosity, why do you think the visual style is different? Don't you think camera work has a lot to do with it?

I would wait for the pictures in motion.

Posted

You're right GK, the camera has everything to do with it. Thats what I meant to point out but failed to do so. All these shots look so incredibly digital. Very different from the "film" look or more cinematic look of LotR if you get what I mean. No doubt it has to do with the fact that Jackson switched to digital cameras for these films. And even in motion, the digital look will show Middle-Earth in a very different light to what we saw in LotR. I just hope the new visual style for Tolkien's world isn't alienating in any way.

You can't judge a visual effects shot until the movie is released.

Given that we are still three months out from release, I would actually say what we've seen so far looks fantastic. Can't wait to see it all finished.
