EDIT: Nevermind, just noticed the pronoun "his" for the 90s score, so not Dudley

------------------------------------

My completely random, uninformed guess

My Left Foot (1989) - Elmer Bernstein

The Crying Game (1992) - Anne Dudley

Both set in Ireland

Posted

Thought the young-composer-early-90s might have been Elfman, but none of his scores from that time period had song/score albums.  Saves me a few bucks to not be him.

Posted

1995 would be mid-90s, not early 90s

Posted

FWIW, Roger just changed it to "mid 1990s"

Which leaves the door open to Elfman's "Dead Presidents," although I wouldn't necessarily call it "one of his best works"

Posted

Roger just posted that it actually is mid 90s not early 90s

I should have said mid 90s. If you're no good at guessing getting the year wrong certainly doesn't help.

I betcha this guess from the FSM thread is right:

Good Morning Vietnam and Operation Dumbo Drop

Both set in Vietnam, both Disney. Alex North at the end of his career, David Newman near the beginning.

Oh God, I had Operation Dumbo Drop on VHS.  One of those movies I watched over and over as a 9 year old for no real reason.

That's assuming the strict usage of an "early-mid-late" system as opposed to just "early-late." Thank you for needing to correct me.

Huh?  I wasn't correcting you, I was working together with you to try to figure out the answer to Roger's riddle.  Sheesh.  Everything's a war with you.

1995 is square in the middle of the decade, it would make no more sense to call it the early 90s than the late 90s. In any event, the guys at Intrada DO use a "strict" early-mid-late system in their clues.

Well they announced the Good Morning Vietnam / Operation Dumbo Drop dual release.

Sigh.  Sometimes you just have to admit defeat to your own nostalgia.  I don't care about the North score, but I loved that dumb elephant movie when I was a kid.  So yeah, I'm buying it.

Such a weird movie.  A live-action Disney Vietnam War movie for kids.

Yea, I want to check those samples out later today for sure

It was one of those movies i was eternally grateful that some other guy took it off Jerry's back.

I don't think Jerry would've been a likely choice for that.  He so rarely worked with Disney.

It seems like it's either that or Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend, since that is "early"-er, and also sold out in a day (IIRC).

Here are both Roger and Doug's clues for those who haven't seen:

Roger:

Next week's release won't be that exciting to many of you as it's a reissue (with some slight remastering) of an earlier Special Collection release that went out of print very quickly, so we felt some missed out and deserved a run at it.

Doug:

be here late this Monday afternoon for artwork, contents and sound samples of our newest CD release, with orders going out beginning on Tuesday, July 25. We’re re-releasing a title from many years ago that had sold out the same day of it’s release. Over the years we’ve had requests to bring it back. It was one of the reasons we dropped that particular business model and established a much more consumer-friendly variant on the limited edition concept. In any case, those of you who were able to grab one in time need not apply. Only a tiny bit of re-mastering has been done, mainly to remove a small gap in the music during one track that wasn’t supposed to be there… albeit no one ever seemed to notice but myself. Licensing terms this time around are a bit stricter so if you find it of interest, please don’t hold off too long.

I hope its Baby; I picked up Explored when they released it, but wasn't following the whole limited edition scores thing back when Baby came out, and never knew about that release until it was already sold out.

Posted

Explorers seems a shoe-in because of his comments about changing their business model. If I recall correctly, they announced that change shortly after it sold out.

I too would prefer Baby, though.

Posted

I never really understood what's so special about Explorers. But Baby has some of Goldsmith's best action cues.

Posted

Hopefully it's Baby, as with many of you, I already own Explorers

Posted

I have never heard Baby or the Explorers, so both are more than welcome for me.

And I am still waiting for Intrada to re-release Rambo 3 as they promised some time ago.

Well apparently it was neither of those scores but

ONE LITTLE INDIAN

An instant sell-out back in 2009! Intrada re-visits its successful limited release of this rousing Jerry Goldsmith western score! Presented by Walt Disney Productions, One Little Indian casts James Garner, Vera Miles, Pat Hingle, Clay O’Brien, Andrew Prine, young Jodie Foster. Harry Spalding scripts, Bernard McEveety directs… and two camels feature. Garner deserts the Union Army, is caught and returned for execution. Complications ensue, Garner again escapes with young O’Brien, encounters two camels, widow Miles, her daughter Foster… all with Army executioners in pursuit. Goldsmith plays to three distinct elements in the story: richly melodic love theme, humorous outdoor camel play and rousing outdoor western action. Each has reward but spotlight surely goes to energetic opening sequence, “Escort The Prisoner” plus ferocious action of “Hot Fire”, “Go After Him!”. Warm melody, accessible harmony of “Thirsty Boy”, replete with trademark solo trumpet is another highlight. Goldsmith uses sitar with orchestra to underline camel sequences to great effect. Westerns were frequent subjects throughout Goldsmith’s career. One Little Indian was the first Disney picture to feature Goldsmith music. Classic scores for Night Crossing, Baby: Secret Of The Lost Legend and Mulan would follow. Note: Although this new edition does include slight re-mastering and very modest changes to booklet design, contents are identical and owners of Intrada’s 2009 album need not apply. Score was recorded at Walt Disney Scoring Stage in Burbank across two days in April 1973 on 35mm 4-channel stereo elements, then transferred to 2” analog masters for storage in Disney vaults in pristine condition. Intrada engaged Bruce Botnick (Goldsmith’s longtime engineer of choice) to digitally mix elements into crisp stereo for CD release. Dynamic recording shines!  Arthur Morton orchestrates, Jerry Goldsmith composes, conducts. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

01. Escort The Prisoner (4:32)
02. He’s White (2:26)
03. Thirsty Boy (4:32)
04. Camel Trouble (2:51)
05. Outwit The Posse (5:30)
06. Thorny Landing (1:00)
07. Saddle Sore (0:59)
08. New Friend (1:21)

09. What He Needs (1:31)
10. No Choice (7:20)
11. End Of The Line (3:17)
12. Hot Fire (3:24)
13. Necktie Party (4:14)
14. Go After Him! (2:19)
15. A Free Man (5:30)

No! Link is my avatar! That's how it should be, that's how it's always been, and that's how it will always be!

There was once a period when you had none. Were you protesting against the four Avatar sequels back then?

Or you're confusing yourself with someone else. Either this or that.

I remember when BB had no avatar. If it was done kind of protest, I have no idea what for.

The quality drop was only if you didn't re-upload the picture after the change, and the round corners I fixed in like the first half hour.

Intrada is having a huge sale on a bunch of great titles!

http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/sc.16/category.67400/.f

I guess Sky High didn't sell that well, dang.

Also, Roger's posted clues for their next new title, which won't come out until August 14th:

Just a heads up that due to the sale, we'll be pushing next week's release to the following week. Which means we'll have one release the 14th and one or two the following week on the 21st. The one on the 14th is a re-issue, although we added the trailer. I remember seeing the trailer and thinking how much I liked it (sounded like John Barry) and how disappointed I was to find out it was composed specifically for the trailer and the film score itself had nothing to do with it. Once I got over the disappointment, I fell in love with the score itself. It's part of a trilogy of sorts (and by "of sorts" I mean not really, but they are in my mind), of which we released the other two.

The guy in the thread who guessed Pino Donaggio's Body Double seems right to me (since Intrada released Dressed To Kill and Blow Out)

Intrada's next new titles will come out on August 22nd now

We decided to combine releases so folks can save on postage and will release two titles on 8/22. Here's an additional hint as to what the titles are, if this helps narrow down the options:

Oooh, looks like two BIG titles are coming from Intrada next week!

Quote

Next week we'll have five CDs. That's right...five CDs, spread out across two albums.

The first is a 3-CD set featuring an epic score to an early 80s production. It's a greatly expanded reissue of our previous straight LP issue. If you're only familiar with the score through that mid-rangey LP master only, then you're not familiar with the full depth of the score, as many of the larger orchestral portions weren't included. It's remixed from the original session masters to also offer a crisper and more detailed listen.

The second is also an expansion of a mid-90s epic. Greatly expanded that is to 2-CDs. Although please note because some astute folks will notice that a couple of tracks from the original release were not available for licensing, but hopefully the wealth of new music makes up for it.

http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=7571

So let's see:

  • Title 1: Early 80s, 3CD set, "epic", Intrada previously released the OST LP on CD that did not contain "larger orchestral portions"

  • Title 2: Mid 90s, 2CD set, "epic", "greatly expanded", some tracks from the OST could not be licensed (songs?)

Is it too much to hope the 90s title is Tomorrow Never Dies, and Roger just typed Mid 90s instead of Late 90s by mistake?

I though the 80s could be Conan The Destroyer at first, but Varese released that OST on CD, and it was mid 80s anyway.

Hmmm could the 90s title be Apollo 13?

Posted

First guess for the early 80s 3-CD release:  Shogun.  Jarre's score for the full miniseries.

Posted

Well yea, exactly.

Did you have that link in your post originally?  I swear I didn't see it before or I wouldn't have posted it myself.
