In the secular sense, Christmas is about getting and giving presents and greeting cards. The decorations inside and outside are far more elaborate for Christmas, and it's spread over two days, Eve and Day. The Christmas dinner doesn't have to be turkey like Thanksgiving is, ham may be served instead, but really anything can be eaten so long as it's a good meal shared with family. Thanksgiving is just about the meal with family: presents, cards, decorations are optional.

The idea of using American Thanksgiving to celebrate the fall harvest is centuries old, but let's be honest, the fall harvest is a distant memory by late November because it's been cold awhile. The holiday was pushed late during the Great Depression as a way to stimulate the economy, and that's where it stayed. The day of Christmas was placed over a preexisting pagan solstice celebration to entice followers many centuries ago. And Thanksgiving doesn't have a dedicated and extended series of church services like Christmas.
