Naïve Old Fart 13,021 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 It's interesting that no-one has mentioned "The Next Day", yet.Thoughts? Any-one? Bueller...Bueller...Bueller?
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Streetlight Manifesto's new album situation is a cluster fuck so I went ahead and downloaded the double album. There was a SM album and then a Toh Kay solo album of the same songs that were both due out last November. Endless delays later, with an added live album bonus, the label axed the solo album and the subsequent live album and won't give them their own music to sell. It's available through Amazon and iTunes though none of the profits go to them. Sad situation, hopefully they eventually sort it all out. Fortunately this fulfills their contract with so they can move on to independently releasing their music.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Arctic Monkey's new single. Love it; video reminds me of Beavis And Butt Head.
A24 5,156 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Yesterday, I listened to the Prelude of The Fall Of The House Of Usher which is an orchestral track on the Alan Parson's album called Tales Of mystery and Imagination Edgar Allan Poe (1976) and this track is probably the reason why I fell in love with orchestral music when I was a teenager. I always thought Andrew Powell did an ace job writing that track but yesterday I noticed the music is very evocative of Debussy. In fact, the feeling was so strong that for some reason I googled the name of the track together with the name Debussy and I immediately learned that Debussy wrote an unfinished opera called The Fall Of The House Of Usher (La Chute De La Maison Usher). Then I searched for this opera on wikipedia and, amazingly enough, it's says:On the progressive rock album Tales of Mystery and Imagination by The Alan Parsons Project the orchestral prelude to "The Fall of the House of Usher", is in fact - although uncredited - the opening music of Debussy's "La chute de la maison Usher", in an alternative orchestration made by band member and composer Andrew Powell. The album was released in 1976 and was therefore the first recording ever of music from La chute de la maison Usher 7Listen to the Alan Parsons/Andrew Powell track: You can hear Debussy's Prelude here: Alex
Naïve Old Fart 13,021 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Alex, if you like that (and I know that you do!) then check-out "The Seduction Of Claude Debussy" by The Art Of Noise.
Jay 46,243 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Arctic Monkey's new single. Love it; Awesome, I'll have to see if it's on spotify!
A24 5,156 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Alex, if you like that (and I know that you do!) then check-out "The Seduction Of Claude Debussy" by The Art Of Noise.I have unearthed the truth behind the Alan Parsons Project and that's all you have to say?! Alex - not a big D&B fan
filmmusic 3,269 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I don't know what style this is considered, but this is a song in English from a young Greek singer!I loved it the moment I heard it!Especially the classical touches with the soprano and baritone voices at 3.10''! (they are also before that)
A24 5,156 Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Good track. Very sad and dramatic. Love the refrain (chorus)
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I just discovered Calexico by hearing them live. Very cool stuff.

Alex - not a big D&B fanSorry, Alex, but I am unable to access the sound clips. From your last post, am I to infer that TAPP ripped-off Monsieur Debussy?Happens all the time, let's face it. Roger Dean is suing a certain J. Cameron esq. for ripping-off all his Yes covers, and using them in "Avatar".It goes on in music, too.P.s. what is D&B?

Naïve Old Fart 13,021 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 John Hurt alone, is worth the asking price.
A24 5,156 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Wow, tonight on TV: Pink Floyd, The Making Of Wish You Were Here. An old favorite of mine (when I was a teenager). Meesa gonna watch that! Alex Wojo 1
A24 5,156 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Seen the docu and it was pretty interesting. I now know the meaning of the famous cover and that 'Have A Cigar' is not sung by Waters, which was a big surprise after 35 years. It so sounded like him. I wonder if there's a Making Of Dark Side Of The Moon and other albums as well.
Quintus 6,495 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Did you know that Naomi Watts' dad is the repeated laughing voice heard in the background of Dark Side of the Moon?
A24 5,156 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 That laugh is iconic! I always presumed it was a member of Pink Floyd or someone of the Abbey Road personnel.
Quintus 6,495 Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 I think he was a longterm roadie or an engineer for the band before he sadly died prematurely.
Jay 46,243 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 How in the world did you not know Roy Harper sang Have a Cigar? Sure he's credited in the booklet?
A24 5,156 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 You mean the inner sleeve, in my case? Never read it. And it's not so rare that I didn't know, in the documentary, Waters or Gilmour said a lot of fans think it's Waters. All my friends thought so too. It really sounds like him.Did you know all the electronics and machine sounds of Welcome to The Machine are done by Waters? He loved to fool around with synths. And I once heard that when a bass part was too difficult, Gilmour (who was a much more precise musician) would play it for the recording. Waters still own a VCS3! I'm jealous!
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I just like to pretend it's Waters anyway. Love that song, one of my favorites by Floyd.

I'm jealous!Too difficult?!If we're talking about that sort of thing, Jeff Porcaro played drums on "Mother" from The Wall. The Moon couldn't get his head around the 6/8 rythmn for "Music Must Change" from The Who's Who Are You, so he simply didn't play on the track!Apparently, Bonzo is all over Nursery Cryme.
A24 5,156 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Apparently, Bonzo is all over Nursery Cryme.Who's Bonzo? Is he related to Gonzo?I just like to pretend it's Waters anyway. Love that song, one of my favorites by Floyd.Waters wished his voice was in better form because he doesn't like how Harper sings it. He thinks it's too caricatural.Alex
Jay 46,243 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Bonzo is the nickname of John Bonham, the drummer from Led Zeppelin, I have no idea what he would have to do with Nursery Cryme though.
Wojo 2,458 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Yeah, I doubt Bonham had anything to do with Genesis, and Phil Collins' drumming style was nowhere near as intense. I saw Junior Bonzo a few years ago in a phenomenal concert, but missed his tour this year with Heart. Probably because he was with Heart.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Bonzo is the greatest drummer of all time.
A24 5,156 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Bonzo is the nickname of John Bonham, the drummer from Led Zeppelin, I have no idea what he would have to do with Nursery Cryme though.Nothing ... Richard just had a momentary lapse of reason.Alex
A24 5,156 Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I almost completely forgot about space rocker Steve Hillage! 'Glorious Om Riff', indeed! Produced by Nick Mason. Select HD and put the volume up to '11'! Alex

Prefer Steve Hackett, though..
Wojo 2,458 Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Steve Hackett goes on tour later this summer into fall, and comes to my town. I'm considering going to the show.
A24 5,156 Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Bonzo is the nickname of John Bonham, the drummer from Led Zeppelin, I have no idea what he would have to do with Nursery Cryme though.Nothing ... Prefer Steve Hackett, though..Green and 'L' are my favorites, Richard. In fact, I must get the remastered CD of Green purely for Nick Mason's sound engineering! The songs (especially the sung parts) of Open lean towards the '80s style ('Don't Dither Do It' is awful). I love Steve Hacket's debut solo album. Alex
Naïve Old Fart 13,021 Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I, too, like "Green", "L", and "Fish Rising".Oddly enough, the only sonicly-duff track on "Open", is "Getting Better", which happened to be produced by...Nick Mason....Wojo, go and see Steve Hackett: you will not be dissappointed!
A24 5,156 Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Talking about Hackett, do you even like Please Don't Touch, Richard?
Naïve Old Fart 13,021 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I love "PDT", Alex! "Hoping Love Will last" is glorious, as is "Iccarus Ascending".I can well imagine the title track being on "Wind And Wuthering", replacing that doodle "Wot Gorilla?" but then why wasn't "Inside And Out" on "W+W"..?IMO, it's the best sounding Hackett LP: rich and deep, without too much ostentatious top-end.
A24 5,156 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 We couldn't be more different, Richard. To my knowledge PDT is not really loved in progland either (because it's so not proggy). And I like Wot Gorilla!!!IMO, the second best Hackett album (after Voyage Of The Acolyte, of course) is Defector (The Steppes ...OMG), but I guess most would vote for Spectral Mornings, which I do like better than Please Don't Touch.Alex
Naïve Old Fart 13,021 Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I like "Wot Gorilla?", Alex, but I prefer "Unquiet Slumbers..." (and "Inside And Out").Yeah, "The Steppes" is amazing, but so is "Hammer In The Sand", in a different way. "The Show" gets me every time. I don't give a tinker's cuss what progland thinks of "PDT", and I never have. Any hackett is alright by me, yes even "Till We Have Faces", which, IMO, is a bit...unusual. I'll continue to buy Hackett for as long as I live, as long as his ex doesn't get my money, Ha, Ha!What do you think of "Genesis Revisited II"?
A24 5,156 Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 I checked that album but I question the necessity for such an album. It's too much a copy, right? Do yourself a favor and check out Ben Howard's Every Kingdom. Not '70s prog but just good pop/rock/folk music. I love when I can listen to new stuff. And of course, I'm waiting for Paul's new album that's coming out soon. If you didn't already know this, Paul is cooler than ever.Alex
Naïve Old Fart 13,021 Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Thanks, Alex, I'll check out the above c.d. Nice cover!I am also awaiting the new one from Mr. James Paul McCartney, but "Kisses On The Bottom" wasn't brilliant...ooh, er, unless you meant Paul Weller..?The Dylan box is a must-have, as is the "Red" box. I'm also contemplating the new Clash box.The new "Crises" box is also out.
A24 5,156 Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Yes, Kisses On The Bottom (a cover album) was not a good idea but the new album will be Paul's own material again and today his own writings (and production) are almost more Beatles than The Beatles! About Paul Weller, this is Weller at his most brilliant:www.muzu.tv/thestylecouncil/my-ever-changing-moods-music-video/202794/Alex

Actually, I'll likely be pre-ordering the new Pearl Jam blind. The lead single is great! I'm also enjoying the lead singles from Grouplove, Kings of Leon, Alter Bridge, Cage The Elephant, and Paul McCartney.Heard the new Arcade Fire single / played the new video last night, and it was pretty good too! I thin they as a whole are VASTLY overrated and hyped, though.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Starting up the new Arctic Monkeys album now. Already played the 3 singles to death though.
Jay 46,243 Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I listened to it at work today, I liked it! I'd say I liked it more than their last few
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 So essentially everything since their debut? Humbug is still their masterpiece for me. AM has a really consistent and identifiable sound all on its own. Love the high-pitched background vocals throughout. Was hoping it'd be a bigger aspect of the album after hearing it on both "R U Mine?" and "Do I Wanna Know?" The album is easily better than Suck It And See, but even that has its pros. What I really love about them as a band is that each album has its own mood. I never get tired of their music.
