Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 Ever since I had my pacemaker installed, I've had to give up looking at Playgirl.Yeah, but what a way to go!
Maglorfin 219 Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I never had wisdom teeth. I feel like a part of my youth has been cruely wrenched from my tender young hands. But I've heard they're rubbish, anyway, so what do I care? Dear Richard who missed it and all of you fearless wisdom teeth debaters, here's something for the strong of heart and stomach.
BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Unless your wisdom teeth bother you why would you want to yank them? Your appendix also has similar chances to cause problems down the road, yet every teen doesn't line up to get those taken out preemptively.
Xander Harris 9,674 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I had my 4 wisdoms taken out because they hurt, got infected and were crushing my mouth in. Feel wonderful ever since. I didn't watch that video, but I had mine taken out while I was conscious. Quite an experience.
Andy 7,730 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I was conscious too for mine. The crunching sound as my teeth were being wrenched out was a foley artist's wet dream. I was high on gas and was stifling laughter for the entire procedure.
Xander Harris 9,674 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Yeah they made sure I was THX certified before proceeding.

Melange 448 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Ever since I had my pacemaker installed, I've had to give up looking at Playgirl.Unless your wisdom teeth bother you why would you want to yank them? Mine didn't bother me at all. But a dental X-ray showed they were completely horizontal. If left, they were going to slowly but surely take out my front teeth in a pincer maneuver.
Datameister 2,586 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I had two wisdom teeth, the ones on top. None on the bottom. I had them removed...early in college, I think. The dentist recommended it because of the direction they were coming in. They gave me nitrous oxide first and then pretty much completely knocked me out - one second, my arms were getting very tingly, and the next, they were putting their tools away. Recovery wasn't especially fun, but the holes healed up pretty quickly, and I think Tylenol was enough for the pain. Definitely glad I didn't watch that video first, though.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I had all my wisdom teeth removed, lived on Ibuprofen for a week after!
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I had all my wisdom teeth removed, lived on Ibuprofen for a week after! In that case, I'm pretty glad I missed it all, but I did have to have 18 months of corrective work on my teeth, when I was a teenager. Thankfully, Big Fat Fanny (she was such a naughty nanny!) took care of me.
Ollie 1,375 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Actually, while I do find myself feeling my age, I don't get as sick as I used too. I used to good for one cold a year and since I hit my 30's I rarely get sick.WOW, Mark! What's your secret? (and what is "Lionel since 1900")?I eat plenty of garlic and onions. Lionel Model Trains: http://www.lionel.com/If history is anything, I'll end up with cancer. My dad and both grandfathers passed away from cancer and one of my uncles did too. The odds are probably in my favor of getting some form of the disease.
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Hmm. Looks like I could go that way, too, Mark. 1 greatgrandfather, 2 great uncles, 2 great aunts, 1 grandfather, and both grandmothers all succumbed to the big C. Let's hope it's not too soon, eh, for either of us.

Williamsfan301 12 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I sympathize with the bad vision. I'm extremely near-sighted. My wife has good vision, so I'm really hoping that our son takes after her in that respect.I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth yanked when I was 19. Took 45 minutes and left me with a bruise in the shape of a hand print on my face. They doctor put me on codeine, which didn't make me loopy, but just not totally with it. My friends got tired of my moping around, so they took me to see the first Mission: Impossible movie. Before we left, I took a dose and sat through most of M:I thinking "I can't follow this movie. It makes no sense."Fast forward 2 years. M:I is on TV, so I decide to watch it, sans the drugs. Turns out, it wasn't the drugs....

Ollie 1,375 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 That looks like my surgery. I had to have my bottom one cut out, much like the one in the video. It was on its side as well. I had them knock me out completely. It was a fun ride.

Wojo 2,458 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Uh, no. I was talking about the surgery where they stick a camera up your tailpipe to look for colon cancer. After you drink a gallon of liquid that makes you shit your brains out.

Ollie 1,375 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I could post a video of my vasectomy.....Tune in next week when JWFanners compare photos of their colonoscopies.Ugh, don't remind me, that's on my future agenda. Although don't they recommend, or doctors wait until you reach the age of 50, to start having them?
Wojo 2,458 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Unless non-cancerous colon diseases run in your family or you show symptoms of possible colon disease yourself.Fortunately, they put me under and I did not wake up until it was over. I do know someone who woke up during it...Oh, and when they tell you to not take in air with the citrate (the particular laxative), they mean it. Sitting on the throne, with a bucket in your hands, burning both ends of the gastrointestinal candle, is not fun.

Datameister 2,586 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Although I've undergone just about every other standard gastrointestinal test imaginable, I've managed to avoid doing a colonoscopy so far. We'll see how long I make it.I've been having heart palpitations for the last few weeks, so I saw the doctor today, and my blood pressure had gone up again. There is something seriously not right about developing hypertension before you've hit 20. I first started noticing it before I hit 20, I mean. I'm past 20 now, but still way too young to have hypertension...especially because I'm far from overweight, I don't have extensive family history of heart problems, my sodium intake is moderate, and even though I spend a lot of time at the computer, I do a good 40-odd minutes of fast walking most days. I'm getting an EKG done next week, and the doctor said my thyroid might be a little enlarged...I just get really sick of feeling defective. I manage to forget about it a lot of the time, but sometimes it hits me how many things about my body are just...not quite right. Some of the issues are more serious than others, but they're all annoying, especially when I consider them all as a whole. Almost makes me want to never have a kid. (Then I remember that if I'm honest with myself, I also carry genes for above-average intelligence, compassion, artistic talent, and overall happiness, so who knows... )

Any of this ring a bell? I know I owe my arrhythmia to stress, lack of sleep and partly also to mild hypokalemia I had at the time - I hope that before/after your EKG (which will probably tell more) they also draw and check your blood, since the low potassium level can be responsible for elevation of blood pressure and occasionally for cardiac arrhythmias.
Datameister 2,586 Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Nah, I'm a pretty low-stress guy. That didn't used to be the case, but I usually don't get worked up about stuff these days. Mentally, at least...maybe my body is trying to compensate, haha. And yeah, I'm waiting for blood test results right now.
Ollie 1,375 Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Quit walking by Williams' house. You're getting too excited.
Williamsfan301 12 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 It will give you a sense of accomplishment
BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Datameister,I know a couple of people who've had success with fish oil supplements and blood pressure in the past. Check with your doctor though, of course, since it does have blood thinning effects, and you mentioned you have other cardiovascular problems. Also good for a great deal of general health.
Datameister 2,586 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Thanks for the tip! I'll see what the doctor thinks once I've got the test results back. Hopefully this is just one cardiovascular issue, but we'll see how it all pans out.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I wish I was a doctor with loads of people like datameister for patients, you could get rich easily.I'd love asking them, Has the mole always looked like that?Do you sometimes have shortness of breath? Can you sometimes hear your heartbeating?or pointing to their elbows and ankles, those look a bit swollen. Are you eating too much saltIs there foam in your pee, and is it yellow or clear?and the best one of all is Do you always slur your words like that?even if they don't slur their words now they think the do.
BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Yeah but there's certain things you don't want to ignore:Things when it comes to your heart and other vital organs.Things when it comes to your twig and berries.P.S. Those that have gone under for trivial procedures, is that not the best damn sleep you've ever had?
Datameister 2,586 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Agreed, Blume. The weird part was when I got out of bed in the recovery room, thinking I had been wheeled into the room feet-first, only to realize there'd been a wall behind my head the whole time. I got a good laugh out of that.Joey, I'd originally just laughed off what you wrote, but in the interest of being real...what gives, man? I'm truly grateful that I'm healthier than some people are, but it still sucks when my body doesn't work right. I've got a variety of real medical issues. The kind that real doctors diagnose, not the kind that some hypochondriac wonders if he's got. Some of them cause me significant physical pain on a regular basis, and there's a chance that this new one could eventually kill me if I don't do something about it. And the best you can come up with is to suggest that I'm a hypochondriac that'd be fun to take advantage of? That hurts. When it comes to real-world suffering, I didn't take you for the kind of guy who would laugh at others' expense. We've had more than our share of disagreements, but if the tables were turned, I would have wished you well. Not belittled you.

You need to develop a thicker skin or I'll start referring to you as Dr. Smith, oh the pain, the pain.That's...closer to an apology than I realistically expected, so I suppose I ought to quit while I'm ahead. But while I've got you here...Jokes are great, but they have to be told in the right context. I think I made it fairly clear in my most recent posts that I really was feeling down about this whole thing. Instead offering a modicum of advice or sympathy (or ignoring me altogether), you chose to devote your whole post to this idea that I was imagining my symptoms, with not so much as a winking smiley at the end to soften the blow. If you had included a smiley...or if you'd said it to me in real life, with facial expressions and an audible tone of voice...or if we were great friends...or if my most recent posts had sounded lighthearted and cheerful...then it would have been easy to just laugh at.And I have developed a thicker skin, actually. Maybe you've forgotten how much I misinterpreted and overreacted in my early days here. But that was a long time ago. This is the first time in ages that anyone has said anything on here - or any forum - that actually bothered me.Anyway, it's not that big a deal. It happened, it was kinda hurtful, I'm over it now. I just felt like being honest in my response. Maybe you'll tone it down a little next time, even if it's something as simple as including the words, "Kidding, I hope everything goes okay," at the end.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Ah, but that's Joey's style. He never uses emoticons, so you never can honestly tell if he's serious. But, he never is
Datameister 2,586 Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I'm aware of this. It was still in rather poor taste. And I still think that his response above is about all I'll get out of him, so perhaps it'd be best to just drop it.
