I think you misunderstood the dictionary. I think it says Doves belong to the Family Columbidae, and then explains that pigeons too, at least that is what i know.

Well doves and pigeons are from the same family but different species.

Which is what I said. They are of the same genus, different species.

They are not that close, i think

See latin names:

Pigeon: Columba livia

Wood Pigeon: Columba palumbus

Collared Dove Steptopelia decaocto

Common Dove: Streptopelia Turtur

Same Family, diferent genus. That is what i meant, the dictionary says Pigeons and Doves are members from the same family (columbidae)
