Oops, I just read in the liner notes that the cue "differs dramatically from what was eventually used in the film".

I'm wondering why that cue hasn't been included on the new cd :?

The original CD lists that cue as "Original Version". If that's the case, it's probably the same version as Track 14 Death On The Carousel (2:30), available on Disc One of the new set

Heh, that's what I thought as well.

Oops, I just read in the liner notes that the cue "differs dramatically from what was eventually used in the film".

Hmm...the two cues ARE dramatically different, so if one of them is on the first CD and the other on the second CD, wouldn't that be a correct description?

Marian - who likes the organ cue more.

But Marian, there are THREE versions of "Death on the Carousel":

- Original Version (CD1 track 14 of the new CD set: Death On The Carousel (2:30))

- Original Album Version (CD2 track 8 of the new CD set and track 9 of the old Varèse CD -"Death On The Carousel and End Title")

- Alternate Version (listed as "Original Version" in the old Varèse CD, and not available on the original LP: Death On The Carousel (2:51))

Apparently, the last one is missing from the new set :?

That's great news, but as always I'll have to hear the score in the film first....and finding that film is as hard as finding an original Horner work. LOL (sorry, just had to have one Horner joke today).

Isn't it funny how those Horner bashers are always repeating themselves?

They're fighting him with his own weapons. :lol2:

Hmm. Well, at least the "original version" is missing, and not the one I like better. And I still have that on the old release, after all.

Marian - wondering why most of Varese's Deluxe Edition covers look so crappy.

Marian, did you get an email from me today.

For some reason i now have 2 email adresses from you, but i'm not sure i used the correct one.

Got it, and replied to it - you should have the reply by now. If not, I once again mistrust my server.

I guess both e-mail addresses you have are correct, but the one you used is the better one.

Nothing yet, but my server coiuld also be responsible for that.

Yes, but atleast you have a clue as to what you are actually doing...

Hmm....I tried to send it again. But my mailserver's log says:

2002-07-29 21:23:02 xxx@yyy.zzz T=remote_smtp defer (-44): retry time not reached for any host

I don't know if that's a specific problem with your server, or if it's some sort of incompatibility between our two servers (though I find that hard to believe, since the mail protocol is standardized), but your address seems to be the only one with that problem.

Do you have a secondary e-mail address I can try?

Marian - wondering.

PS: I replaced your e-mail address in the log above with "xxx@yyy.zzz", so no spam bots can steal it.

2 CD set! YAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! :jump:

I GOT MAIL I GOT MAIL I GOT MAIL I GOT MAIL YAAYYY!!!

Unfortunately, it seems to be missing the alternate "Death on the Carousel" that was on the older Varese album.  Perhaps it's a hidden bonus cue.

The original CD lists that cue as "Original Version". If that's the case, it's probably the same version as Track 14 Death On The Carousel (2:30), available on Disc One of the new set :)

The film version of Death On The Carousel is definitely different than the two album versions. I've heard them with my own ears.

Still, the original album version is still on the Varese album, and it wasn't that hot anyways. A very plain cue. Not needed if you ask me (unless it's as a hidden track 15 minutes in back of the end titles like the alternate Star Wars Main Title Archive on the SW:SE.

But what is this???

No source cue?!

WHERE'S the ultra-groovy... "I'M TIRED"?????

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Oh well... it can't be UTTERLY perfect. (Unless it's a hidden bonus cue... tee-hee!!!)

-Chris, Happy anyways. It's a dream come true as is... :)

This is actually possible.

Varase has included little uncredited tidbits on a few of their DE releases.

Stefancos- who thinks we should start a petition if they ommit that cue. :)

That's great news, but as always I'll have to hear the score in the film first....

It's available on DVD. Get it. It also occasionally plays on HBO/Cinemax. That film is a HUGE guilty pleasure for me.

But I fell in love with the music on the OST CD BEFORE I ever saw the film, and hence... enjoyed it better. I may not have cared about it as much if I saw the film first, so I say "Get the damn score 1st!!!" :)

It's not THAT essential, but it would be nice if they included it.

I prefer the actual carousel music version anyways... :jump:

I'm relatively new to Williams and wasn't born when THE FURY was originally released.

Is it a good score? Any good themes there? :)

Posted

Highly recommended. Composed during his peak late '70's period and is littered with those touches that we all know & love!

Highlights are as follows:

The 'Main Title' is a slow and brooding 6 note motif that builds to a tremendous conclusion on timpani.

'For Gillian' is Williams in scherzo mode, a delightful cue.

'The Search For Robin' opens beautifully with horn and strings and then builds to a magnificent crescendo.

'Death on the Carousel' starts quitely with a 4 note horn motif, and continues through various orchestral permutations. The middle of the cue then segues into some of Williams most original writing (I won't give too much away, but think of a fairground tune).

The 'End Titles' (actually the death scene) is a true orchestral blow-out and is not to be missed!

Finally, the 'Epilogue' concludes the score perfectly with an almost adagio-type cue. Similar to Arlington from JFK in its structure

That is just a brief summation, as a score it is definitely in my top 10!

It is important to note that the LSO's version (recorded thanks to some Superman sessions that were booked but not completely used) is far superior to the studio orchestra's film version as most of us already know. Particularly with regard to the death scene (can't beat the LSO's brass and percussion!)

Sarabande's new release is heaven sent! Definitely one to purchase and treasure! :)

The score is not about themes. Of course, it does have themes, and the main theme is certainly very memorable, too - but it's not the kind of melodic theme you'd expect from a 70s Williams theme.

That said, the score is a masterpiece. And as far as it's function in the movie is concerned, I keep saying it might be the best score ever written. It's still amazing on CD, too.

Marian - who will definitely get the Deluxe release ASAP.

Once I read that the Fury was being re-released (Yesterday! like the rest of you.) I Ran and I mean RAN for my credit card and ordered the disc. I just hope the international shipping to Canada is closer to one week not six! (the site said 1 - 6 weeks for delivery!)

Brian99_1 - marveling at the way this release just came out of left field!!! :yellow:

I'm glad that this rumor became reality.

I now just hope the rumors about you aren't true, Stefan...

:sigh:

BTW, Send me your money, Steef, and I'll order yours. International shipping is a little more though.

-Chris, Who just ordered his today!!! YIPEE!!!! :folder:

Send me an email with the precise amount of cash you want from me and I'll make sure to send you first rate double sided color prints of the money.

You want Dollars or Euro's (i ask because Euro's are worth more these days.) LOL

Stefancos- awaiting Ricards post in this thread, reminding Lord Chrusher and myself about this MB's private message function.

So, Stefan, can I order mine? Looks like you won't need my help. :sigh:

Marian - who can't wait to have the disc, and is too lazy to send Stefan a PM. :biglaugh:

Okay, I just looked on the site for international shipping. I'll email you about it instead of wasting MB space.

(Although this is a good way to cheaply increase your post count, hehehe... :sigh: )

I never thought I could either, but I got The Fury in 1995 and I've been hooked ever since. What makes this release so great that it's the full unreleased film score is there, and the awesome LSO album version is also. They are both unbelievable and essential to ANY John Williams fan.
