When I was producing the FSM catalog, my single biggest point of pride and satisfaction was the fact that we were resurrecting these scores from studio vaults and making them available to the public—in many cases for the first time ever, lovingly produced (if I do say so myself).

I assumed that after our CDs were over and done with, the masters would remain available in reissues from other labels, and especially as digital releases. It seems like a no-brainer, right? If the master exists, what is to lose from putting it up online so people can discover and buy it?

Alas...except for maybe the 20-40 most popular titles, I fear I was wrong. The studios are becoming ever more conservative in their legal clearances. As administrations change, they tend not to trust anything that was cleared in prior years, and want to undertake their own legal review. And as the audience for these titles dwindles, there is less motivation for the legal work required to clear even the easiest, most obvious titles. Plus, not to put too fine a point on it...people are dumb and don't understand anything.

Again, our big titles will always be available. And I'll be the first to buy them if the next label can improve on the program or sound quality! (I loved La-La Land's 2CD version of The French Connection/French Connection II!)

But I fear hundreds of others will only be available on our out-of-print CDs.

And yes this was a shameless ad! You can look over what remains of our catalog here:

And please visit my Indiegogo campaign for special coupons and deals to buy many of the FSM CDs at 50% or even 75% off!

Thanks!

Me neither!  I am happy to see Star Trek 2, Gremlins, and Twilight Zone The Movie are still in print!

Have any FSM releases been re-released by any other labels since they have gone OOP? The only one I can think of is Superman, but I am sure there are more.

Oh and anyone who doesn't have Barry's King Kong, Gremlins, or Twilight Zone are missing out! Those are all amazing releases!

I've been scouring EBAY lately for scores.

I've come across literally dozens of FSM releases that are promoted as being out- of- print.

The prices are double or triple list price.

So, I just visited SAE only to find most of these titles are, in fact , for sale.

Caveat emptor

Like a lot of you, we subscribed to Lukas Kendall’s Film Score Monthly long before we ever had a CD label.
It was our entry point to the wonderful world of film music!
So we’re happy to help Lukas fund the next generation of FSM’s operations: a brand-new website and archive of 35 years worth of content, new CD production (check the link for details!) and Best of Film Score Monthly anniversary book.
The Kickstarter is now live and funding and we encourage you to check it out!

The economy must be doing alright now if a long-defunct film music label has decided to revive its business production.

I don't understand. The FSM cd label will be back?

I didn't see this anywhere mentioned. (to tell you the truth I read very quickly the link)

Maybe there's hope then for John Williams premiere early releases like back then , when we had this label?

FSM (the record label) isn’t back for the long term.  This is a project to modernize their website and forum.  One of the goodies for donating to the GoFundMe is a new CD release of the Filmation Music of Ray Ellis (inclusive of the previously released Star Trek animated music and some unreleased music from other shows).  After that, kaput.

Exactly the same thing I said.  "We'll" is short for "We will"
