This thread is really becoming boring, guys.

Posted

That's when I'll be vacating the thread. I can't be bothered retreading old ground again. I've said what I think and I'm done with it.

Posted

Why don't you go watch the film, and tell us what you think of it, so we can get down to real business?

I admit, it certainly would raise the level of this thread, but I'm waiting for the Blu-ray. I'm boycotting 3D.

Well go see it tomorrow. It's not showing in 3D in town and the next closest theatre is 25 minutes away.

So I figure well stay in town and see it in 2D. Better popcorn and cheaper prices.

Surely you know that every movie that gets released in 3D is also shown in 2D, usually in the same theater showing the 3D version?

I've heard several times that this isn't the case with Prometheus. Scott didn't want to movie to be shown in 2D. But now that I think of it, Scott might not have that kind of power. Perhaps I will see the movie then. Will check my local theater.

Lol, wishful thinking methinks. You're gonna be so disappointed in the movie's ability to make you want to debate it; as we do the likes of 2001 and Watchmen. Ain't gonna happen.

Lex hates seeing films in the theatre for some reason or another.

It's showing in 2D all over my country. It wasn't even difficult to find a screening.

Yea, it's showing everywhere in either 2D or 3D. Never heard of a 3D movie being shown ONLY in 3D, actually.

As far as 3D goes, it was one of the better films I've seen that use this technology.

One more thing that I forgot to mention: the first 10 minutes (maybe slightly more) of the film is some of the best cinema I've watched in quite a while. But all that takes place before plot kicks in.

I'm referring to the opening titles and then the montage aboard Prometheus with Fassbender wandering around and watching fims, Maybe a bit too 2001 meets Alien, but still a very impressive sequence.

.

That was cool I had this "it's so cool Scott is doing s-f again" moments. Unfortunately, immediately after that film takes a deeeeeeeep dive.

I agree. In those moments I was like, Ooo, I'm in for a treat.

Posted

those of you who have seen it, did you see it in 3D?

Yes, I did, and it's the best 3D film I've seen since AVATAR.

Posted

Okay, I might not see it in cinemas after all.

No, Alex. Don't give up so easily. There is stil hope.

Will he or won't he? The suspense is killing me.

Hang on, no it isn't.

If there's one film in the last 10 years you need to see in the theatre, it's this! A MUST-SEE on the big screen, IMO.

Posted

If we are to look at every single film released from June 2002 to May 2012, and really think about them, I'm not sure anyone would put Prometheus in their number one spot of "must see in the cinema". Come on, Thor. Don't let your love of this VERY recent flim cloud your judgement of 10 years of cinematic history.

No, Alex. Don't give up so easily. There is stil hope.

But Thor mentioned Avatar! I mean, what would you do if someone said, "Folks, go see the new Indiana Jones, it's the best thing since The Librarian!"

And let us not forget that the only reason Thor placed Prometheus at the top of his ten year list is because Jurassic Park 4 didn't happen yet.

I saw it in IMAX 3D, and it looked terrific. But the quality of 3D varies so greatly from theatre to theatre that projection standards can take a movie with excellent 3D -- which Prometheus has -- and ruin the image so badly that you won't even be able to tell.

The best 3D I've seen so far was Hugo, and this doesn't top that. But it's close.

The movie is sitting well with me after a night's sleep and a morning's contemplation. One thing that I noticed last night, though: what happened to the shot of Shaw in front of the mirror, quickly raising her hands in a prayerful gesture? That shot is in every trailer, and the scene it would come from is in the movie ... but it cuts away before that actual shot. Weird.

I wish I had seen Hugo in the theater!

Of your list I trimmed a few films I didn't think as great cinematic film experiences.

I too wish I'd see Hugo in the theatre.

It's a rare treat to see Malick in a theater. Do it when you can.

As some may already know, I'm not much of a theatergoer these days, though I do seem to be going back into it. Even I would have never thought that I'd pass on Scorsese, Spielberg, and Fincher on the big screen. Have yet to see Hugo, War Horse, Tintin, or Dragon Tattoo.

Hugo and Dragon Tattoo are GREAT films. You would like both of them.

War Horse is nothing special

Tintin is a fun romp.

I have no doubt. My friend hated Hugo, but I still defend it without having seen it

It's not for everyone. But it is for lovers of cinema.

Dragon Tattoo is just am extremely well-made thriller movie. Fincher is very consistent in his work, only faltering with Benjamin Button imho.

He talked about 3D. You ain't gonna watch Prometheus in 3D anyway. So don't pay attention to what Thor said.

Yeah, I was talking about 3D. This is the best use of 3D I've seen since AVATAR (a film I also happen to love, but that's another discussion).

Of course, there are other great films in the last 10 years that are also Big Screen must-sees, like LOTR. But this belongs to that company.

Unfortunately, its looking like I won't be able to see this film till Sunday....and I really wanted to see this film on opening night.....

So I have to be wary of this thread for another 2 days while its bursting with new viewers and discussion.

Sigh....life sucks. :(

I watched the movie a second time tonight. (I work at a theatre, so I can run these things in the middle of the night for myself when I so desire. And occasionally, I even take advantage of that.)

Here's the thing ... certain aspects of the movie do not work. For example -- and this is giving nothing away, since the shot is in the trailer (plus, for some reason, I can't find the thingy to mark the text as spoiler) -- when a certain character is running away from the ship as it crashes, there is seemingly no reason whatsoever why that character wuns in the direction they run in. Because, you know, running a few feet in a different direction would take you totally out of its path. That's one example, but there are others. (Example: two incredibly stupid and seemingly contradictory actions taken by a biologist. Reconcile these things if you can; I would love to hear about it.)

Some of the dialogue is also flat-out terrible. One character actually asks another if they have a hidden agenda. Just comes right out and asks, with no irony. Nobody asks a question like that.

Worst of all -- ? -- is the fact that I simply cannot figure out how certain aspects of the movie would actually work in such a way as to lead to Alien and its events. Some of it definitely does connect, and connects well. Some of it ... not so much.

Those are all large negatives.

And yet ... I still enjoyed the movie the second time. I enjoyed it very much, in fact. And the reason for that is that the movie simply has too many individual elements that work well -- at least on me -- to make me basically not care about any of the rest of that stuff. For example, Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are both great. I've heard some critics say otherwise about Rapace, and I suppose I can theoretically see why they'd feel that way; but I don't agree with them.

I also love the score, which surprises me. The effects are really about as good as effects can be currently. The design is simply gorgeous, top to bottom. Idris Elba does a shitty redneck accent, but is otherwise great. Charlize Theron is really good. I like the grumpy ginger with the partially shaved head, even though he is asked by the screenwriters to say some very stupid things. A few individual shots are instant classics.

The bottom line is, it worked on me emotionally, I guess. It's got problems, no doubt about it, and if those problems turn people totally off, I'd completely understand their point of view on it. For me, though, it feels like a movie I'll still be thinking about a year from now; there will only be a tiny number of those this year, so in my book, it's getting marked down as a win, warts and all. And I'm already looking forward to seeing how deleted scenes and/or behind-the-scenes material might revise my opinion even further upward. Or maybe even downward.

Either way, mark me down as one of the people in the thumbs-up camp.

Good! So far I think it's only you and me in JWFAN (and I'm far more positive than you too....the issues you point out do not come across as issues to me).

I'd say that yes, it most certainly does expect the audience to think the movie leads to Alien. Because otherwise there'd be no space jockeys, no croissant-lookin' spaceship, no warning-message beacon left behind, and the scene at the very end would be completely different. Otherwise, the argument would be that what happens in Alien is just, like, you know, a coincidence. So if it's a case of Ridley Scott saying, "No, no, that was other shit happening on some other moon; had nothing to do with this at all," then I'd have to say that's an appallingly stupid idea for a movie. It wouldn't keep me from enjoying Prometheus, for all the reasons I listed above; but it would make me lose a huge amount of respect for Scott's judgment.

Instead, I think what's happening here is that the filmmakers want to keep you in the dark about the specifics of how, exactly, the connections work. And I'm inclined to give them some room to move as far as that goes. But only some. Theoretically, a sequel could clear these issues up. But if it gets made and then fails to follow through on that promise -- and given the final scene, I'd say it IS a promise -- then it will revise my opinion of this movie downward considerably.
