Has there never been a non-Walin Giacchino score before?

Wallin didn't come into the picture for Giacchino until 2006/2007 or so

Well if you wanted to you could just go through the CDs of the ones it says he didn't do. Giacchino's music has always sounded the same to me, meaning it all felt like a uniformed style from score to score. I would have never guessed that Ratatouille and Let Me In were mixed by two different people. The only time I ever noticed how the recording affected the music was between LOST Season 1 and then the rest of the series.

The Lost CDs credit "Danny Wallin" as the engineer.

I thought the dry, sparse sound came up with Lost and assumed it's an orchestration thing. Ratatouille sounds great, but most Giacchino since Lost has been stuck in those dry acoustics, which were perfect for lost but have been starting to get on my nerves since then. If it turns out that Wallin is to blame, I'll be glad to be proven wrong. In any case Iwataki has done some fantastic recordings.

The IMDB information doesn't seem to be entirely accurate, at least for video games and tv shows. But regardless, I have a feeling STID will have a different sound (recording/engineering wise) than ST, and it will likely be a positive one.

Giacchino's writing style has also changed a lot in the 5 (!!) years since he recorded the first ST score so the whole thing will just be super interesting to hear

Exactly. Giacchino's writing style has changed a lot since MOH. So I'd be curious to see how the music would sound without Wallin.

I honestly don't think it's changed much. There's a clear line of development in the maturity and gravitas of his writing, particularly regarding thematic development, but it never ceases to be fun when he wants it to.

I think the score is likely to be better than the film itself. Which is not much different from the situation last time.

Wow, what a fascinating picture! So at the time this picture was taken:

-There was either 52 or 71 total cues (I think)

-Reel 1 had been re-edited 22 times, reel 2 21 times, reel 3 31 times, and reel 4 27 times

-Reel 1 runs at least 12:35 and contains 7:50 of music

-Reel 2 runs at least 17:30 and contains 10:40 of music

-Reel 3 runs at least 13:36 and contains 8:30 of music

-Reel 4 contains 15:11 of music

-It looks like every cue has been revised either 3 or 4 times, but I don't think that's the case - that Ver column must mean something else.

If you squint hard enough at the bottom of the new poster, you will see that Varese is releasing the OST.

The movie opens Friday May 17, and I predict the OST will drop on Tuesday May 7th, the same day that Chris Tilton's Fringe: Season 5 OST drops. I'll update the thread title accordingly when there's an official announcement.

Let's hope it's longer than 35 minutes this time, and that if Giacchino uses choir and/or additional drum overlays, they are included in the OST this time!

I predict that Varese knows there will be demand for more music, and will allocate necessary budgeting for a full CD.

Or they'll go "Hmmmm I can release these 45 minutes for $12 and then six months later I can release a complete one and get $20...and end up with so much more money!"

Given the history (and strong sales) of the previous score I wouldn't be surprised if they went for the 2 CD's. If not now, then certainly later.

The new poster definitely looks ugly ....the first one was a knock of The Dark Knight Rises.

For the OST I hope it's better than the first one and I also agree that the OST will be first then an "expanded" score later on. That's the way how the Star Trek releases have been and will continue to be.

I wish Dan Wallin wasn't recording and mixing the score. Lord knows how much of the scores he's done have been... subpar at best, and utterly muddy at worst. The only scores he hadn't mucked up completely weren't recorded by him, only mixed.

It hits IMAX theaters two days early in the U.S. -- May 15th. And then on Friday, it opens in regular 2D and 3D theaters.

If you want to get real technical, the album comes out after the movie's overseas release, and a day before its U.S. release.

I think I prefer the tone and style of this theme to Horner's, where Star Trek is concerned.

OK, I know everyone is let down that the credits are just another rehash BUT...

Consider this: the shitty video sounds way more exciting than Dan Wallin's mix.

Listen to those drums! Now there's no telling how it'll all sound in the end, but at least the raw orchestra sounds nice.
