Koray, I'm sorry. Insurance? We lost power for three weeks during the ice storm and it was incredibly horrible. Especially for January in Maine.

No, just that Pepco sucks. Whenever our area gets hit with any type of storm, we're out of power for like a week. It's become a yearly event. Thankfully I was on vacation for the duration of it this time. Talk about perfect timing.

Posted

at least when it's freezing and you lose power you don't necessarily lose your refrigerated food.

we only lose power when I purchase a lot of meat during the summer when it's 100+degrees.

Now back to topic, tonight we're having a traditional southern supper.

tonight it's southern fried chicken, mashed potatoes using real butter and real cream, fresh corn, fried okra, and homemade biscuits and gravy. dessert is homemade french vanilla ice cream. I generally prefer store bought ice cream but this is a good recipe.

Posted

what's southern fried chicken?

no blood pudding tonight, instead we had lamb burgers with a sour cream & feta cheese sauce, rucola, tomato+cucumber+red onion slices.

it's the best way chicken can be cooked.

I like to soak my chicken in buttermilk for several hours, then I coat it in seasoned flour with a bit of of corn meal to help it all stick. I let it set for 20-30 min to let the coating set.

the I fry it in a cast iron skillet, first with the lid to let the interior of the chicken get done then the last 10 minutes I take the lid off to crisp the chicken.

I drain the oil and leave a bit of drippings and the crunchy bits that fall off and make gravy from that.

Mashed potatoes made from red potatoes. 3 fist sized, boiled till cooked through, mash the potatoes, about a stick of real butter, or quality margarine, (if it doesn't say margarine or butter then avoid it. none of the I can't believe its not butter shit or crock or shedd spread). about a 1/3 cup heavy cream or half and half or whole milk, warmed. Add to potatoes. Whip with hand mixer on highest speed. Put as much air into the potatoes as you can.

I also bought some large jalapeno's. I just did a quick pickle on them. Boil them in some vinegar and water, kosher salt and sugar. I'll let them cool, then I'll refrigerate them for a day. These were really extra hot jalapeno's. You can smell the heat in them.

I'll make some taco meat with ground beef and taco seasonings, or burrito seasonings, what I have on hand. I'll cook the meat extra fine, add a 1/4 cup of milk helps the hamburger break down into a very fine texture. I let that cool. I do all this a day ahead.

tomorrow I'll slice the peppers in half and seed them. I will mix shredded sharp cheddar and the meat mixture and stuff each half pepper.

Then I'll roll in flour, then dip in egg and milk, roll in flour again, then dip in the egg wash again and roll in breadcrumbs.

I'll stick them in the freezer for about 20 min. Then fry them until brown, serve with some buttermilk ranch dressing, or some homemade cheese dip.

last night I made tequila lime marinated chicken wangs, tator tots and corn on the cobb.

the wings had a bit of a kick.

I didn't think chicken wangs were big enough to have any meat on them?

Whoops. You did say wing.

you're from the north, you speak more better english. In the south we have a drawl, sometimes wings comes out wangs. you know like lets go to Zaxby's and get some chicken wangs, or lets go to Wing and things and gets some wangs and thangs. Some times its affected just for the humorous element.

Ren, you and Jason, and the rest of you from New England are lucky, I miss New England style hot dog buns.

the ones we get here are not even close to being as good, and with Lobster prices falling fast, I want some to makes some lobster rolls.

Posted

I think we are pretty lucky to have those AND red hot dogs.....

Posted

I had a lobster roll at a local eatery a few weeks ago, and it wasn't bad. I think I had the wrong kind of beer with it so my taste buds weren't batting above .500 but I'd get it again to be sure.

Don't take up smoking. Every time I see a fat person light one up, I want to yell "IT'S NOT WORKING!"

I'm told that simply drinking a lot of water and cutting all high calorie drinks from your diet -- soda (pop), high-sugar juices, and a lot of alcoholic drinks -- can have a noticeable effect in just the first few weeks.

This.

yes, that or... simply cut down on carbs. at least bad carbs. no white rice, no white pasta, white bread. and go for walks if you're not a gym person.

and obviously don't go back to your old eating habits when you've lost the weight.

No second helpings, don't eat until you can't move, smaller plates, no meals in-between meals. Want a snack? Put down the chips and cookies and reach for a piece of fruit or vegetables.

Eating out is another thing to minimize because the food tends to be higher in fat and salt than what you can prepare yourself. I went through a long stint where I did eat out all the time, and consumed gross amounts of soda, beer, and sugary teas. The damaged could have been reduced with a simple water with lemon.

Posted

eat 5 times a day, but indeed smaller plates. NEVER EVER SKIP BREAKFAST! chicken & fish = (Y) (Y). cucumber sticks with a yoghurt based dip is a great snack. so is a handful of unsalted almonds and cashews.

Posted

Also have breakfast and lunch be your bigger meals, and dinner be your smallest. Don't snack after dinner at all, especially not 90 minutes or less before you go to sleep

What is a world without Sweet Heat Barbecue Chips or Vinegar and Salt chips? Unsalted nuts are unpalatable. How can you not eat white rice and white bread, they are God's gift to mankind. Stefan, avoid yogurt, you know it sounds like a burp and smells like one too, and it is really only for people with birthing hips. Avoid fish, it's the worst food out there, especially that rotted herring.

Good Lord man just smother everything in brown or white gravy. Use real butter, or margarine (it must say margarine or its just foul). Lots of peanut butter, lots of cheeses, avoid olive oil, use lard instead. It tastes so much better. Or even better than that smaltz.

the others are right, eat breakfast, the older you get the more you like it.

I recommend two fried eggs, double yolkers if possible, 2 pieces of sausage, 8 strips of bacon. Hashbrowns cooked in the bacon grease. 2 biscuits with sausage gravy, and 2 pancakes or waffles, smothered in butter and syrup, and two pieces of white toast with butter. You can cut a few calories by peeling the white off the eggs and just eating the yellow. The dogs and cats will eat the white, it's good for their coats.

Remember its easier to lose weight when you've died. It practically falls off of you then.

Joey is as serious about providing sound weight loss tips as Paula Deen. Nobody who wants to lose weight promotes the use of grease, butter, lard, syrup, chips, and egg yolk.

But everybody's body is different, thank jeebus. Some can eat and eat and eat and never gain an ounce because their lifestyle choices burn it off, and others eat well and still can't drop a pants size.

If the fish you're eating smells fishy or smells offensive, you're eating the wrong kinds. White rice and bread are boring, and yogurt is tasty and also helps do what Jamie Lee Curtis promotes it for, i.e. move stuff along.

Posted

yeah if you want to look like a dried out lesbian then by all means eat like Jamie Lee Curtis.

There is nothing wrong with eating anything I said. Butter, margerine, egg yolks, syrup, lard are not bad foods, they never were. They may not be everyday foods, but none of them are down right unhealthy.

It's these fking idiot food nutritionalists who think everything is bad and it's not. That's why I recommend that you chicken fry your bacon, every time a piece of bacon is chicken fried a food nutritionist dies a horrible death. David Zinzenko, you're a pos.

Moderation is the key, eat a variety of food, drink lots of water, and don't fear the occasional piece of chocolate cake. And eat cheese, everyday if you can, and whole milk. It's suddenly good for you again after being unhealthy for years. Jeez would these sh*t scientists make up their minds.

Posted

I eat the occasional container of yogurt in my lunch. It's always got some kind of fruit in it, as I cannot bring myself to eat plain yogurt. I assure you that I do not look like a dried out lesbian. In fact, I think that would be a welcome change to my appearance.

Frankly, anyone who doesn't drive already has the perfect excuse to be in good shape. Hop on your bicycle and go.

Posted

now you sound like Alex, I think I will ride my bike 9 miles to Walmart pick up a 40lb bag of dog food. It's only 107 degrees outside.

Posted

and don't fear the occasional piece of chocolate cake

indeed. I was obsessed with eating healthy a while back (mind you, I was close to being underweight rather than overweight) and nothing good ever came from it. just anxiety. uuugh!

Posted

You need a drink, then, as the 107 degrees have given you drain bamage. I feel no sympathy for any idiot who commits suicide by bicycle carrying a heavy load in such extreme heat conditions.

The bicycle comment was aimed the person who originally asked how to lose weight, Stefan, a man we both know doesn't have a car and lives in a country that probably won't break 75 in the next ten days (I used Amsterdam as the reference). It also looks like it won't stop raining, but mud washes out.

swimming is a great exercise too. Stefan, you should swim.

Posted

I love swimming, but more so i love walking next to the ocean

Posted

we'd go to Wells beach, but sometimes we couldn't swim, or weren't allowed to swim because of the seals nearby. My grandmother or Dad would let us go up to our ankles. Sometimes you could see the big GW's fins.

personally I want to eat and not be eatin, like poor poor justin....

I've been dieting for the past 8 weeks with my girlfriend, and we've both lost about 20 pounds (each). I would have lost more had I not been on vacation all last week.

Basically, I've been keeping myself to under 1500 calories a day, and exercising for at least 30 minutes a day (5 or 6 times a week, not all 7). My exercise is usually the elliptical in the workout room in my condo building. Sometimes I do 45 minutes, sometimes I go for walks/runs with Marcy instead, and sometimes I play disc golf or climb a mountain instead.

Back to the food, the key for me has really been

-Always start with a strong, healthy breakfast, hopefully high in protein (usually eggs). Get that metabolism going early!

-Enjoy a nice lunch, try to make sure you're filled up.

-All day long, drink tons of water at work. This will help you feeling full and not get as hungry, and also is just generally good for you. I also drink 2 mugs of tea (one bag) a day, which helps too.

-Once you're home from work, don't eat a lot! Just enough so you don't go to bed starved. Going to bed hungry is alright - you can wake up and eat a nice huge breakfast all you want!

The easiest way to lower your overall colarie intake is, as already said, cutting out soda, full-sugar juices, and all alcohol (which is easily the hardest part!).

At first I was working out after work, but that really cuts into your free time. Lately I've been waking up and hitting the gym first thing, and its AWESOME. Breakfast tastes extra sweet and I arrive at work fully woken up, and when I get home from work, the entire night is mine - I've already worked out, showered, had my biggest meals, and worked a full day. Boo yea!

Posted

it's the second helpings that always hurt me, but I rarely do that anymore.

Bread soup tonight.

Broth, bacon, garlic, sweet pepper and good bread.

I was gone for a week and two thirds of the loaf of bread became as firm and chewy as Megan Fox' ass.

Posted

I'm gonna be grilling beat burgers with a side of veggies (Asparagas, eggplant, onions, peppers) that will be tossed in olive oil and some seasoning before also being grilled
