Wojo 2,458 Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 The scathing and idiotic reviews of the Digibook are coming in at Best Buy's website. This one is fun:misleading 1.0 / 5.0Posted by: ksc2012 on 08/15/2012The title says "Collector's Series" which leads me to believe that it is all 4 movies (the entire series). This is WRONG. I drove all over trying to find a copy. Finally called a store on the other side side of town and drove out there to find out it is only the first Jaws. If it isn't the series, it shouldn't say that on the cover.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 sometimes a miscarriage would have made the whole world better.
Wojo 2,458 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I needed to be in this part of town anyways, so I stopped at Best Buy after work, sometime after 6, to raid their Jaws Blu-Ray selection. They didn't have a dedicated cardboard display, and there were no Jaws Blu-Rays of either type, digibook or normal, to be seen on the shelf between Iron Lady and J. Edgar or wherever in the alphabet it should have been. They did have the new edition DVD. Whoopiee. After ten minutes of salespeople ignoring me, I finally stopped one guy who checked inventory. Three at that location. Bingo. We went back to the shelf, where I had previously proved that it wasn't to be found, and I started rifling through the displays that face you, thinking someone may have hidden it for a friend (though I would have hidden it at the far end of the store, so this was stupid). Salesman B comes by, asks what we're looking for, and says they're out. I start to get mad and insist that the system says you have three. So I'm thinking, you've got thieves or bad inventory trackers, either one of which suck. He checks up front and comes back empty -- I had already been there -- and FINALLY decides to check the stockroom. It came to $29.09 with the coupon, which is far more than I wanted to spend for ONE movie, but this movie is worth it. I don't see making gotta-get-the-special-BR-package-within-the-first-week part of my normal life.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 BBY's inventory system is absolute shit. Those little customer kiosks that give you an exact number used to screw me over all the time.Wojo, they have a dedicated section for new releases, usually near the registers, and definitely separate from the rest of the alphabetical Blus.
Wojo 2,458 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Wojo, they have a dedicated section for new releases, usually near the registers, and definitely separate from the rest of the alphabetical Blus. While I may have bought my first BluRay today, it was not my first time inside a BestBuy. This place did not have Jaws in their new releases section. Their new releases section was swallowed by The Lorax and Hunger Games, and plenty of other movies that don't involve a fake-looking shark.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Whatever, the company is shit. My brother had a worse time tracking down a copy. After hearing how so many people are unable to get one, I'm surprised I found it so easily. Why was yours $30? Was $25 for me, minus the $3 coupon which got negated by tax.
Wojo 2,458 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Yes, I suppose I layered the annoyed sarcasm on rather thick. Sorry about that, you were only trying to help seeing as how they used to punch your time card.Last week the digibook was $24.99. This week, it jumped up to $29.99 which will probably be its normal price for a while. The digibook of Gettysburg: The Director's Cut is still at that price, and since that restores 17 minutes, it's a must-get for me. All the coupon did was take off the tax. I figured I better get it now before it disappears and it's $60+ on eBay.The checkout guy was annoyed because he wanted it and thought they were sold out.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Jaws will be playing on the big screen in Conway Arkansas at the Cinemark Theatre on their XD screen. Trying to figure out if I can make it.
Delorean90 47 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 We'll be having that as well this Thursday. Definitely planning to go to that, and I'll be bringing my brothers to see it for the first time!
Xander Harris 9,675 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 It should be playing on my Blu-ray player, but I'm still waiting for the book.Jesus H. Christ.
Wojo 2,458 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I prefer when Joliet Jake declares him to be a tap dancer.

Wojo 2,458 Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I finally watched this on BluRay between yesterday and today, with a friend who had not seen Jaws for many years, and it was superb. The image was vibrant and clear, considering that I HDMI cabled the laptop to the TV, the sound was excellent (my TV speakers aren't actually that bad, so I may hold of on upgrading the sound system for a while), and I couldn't help but watch with a giddy grin on my face for most of the movie, as I knew all the lines that would be spoken. It really is a perfect movie.Oh, and I noticed that when Chief Brody wakes in the morning, the nightstand that's beside his bed...I have two of those exact pieces of furniture. They were hand-me-downs from my grama, so go figure. mahler3 1
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Jesus H. Christ.(Slaps E.T.) That's for blasphemy.
nightscape94 968 Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 Just bought the Jaws Blu-ray. Looks amazing, sounds amazing. Probably my favorite movie of all time. Wojo 1
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted September 1, 2012 Author Posted September 1, 2012 I caved and bought the Blu-ray for 18 euro's, which is against my policy of buying single film titles that cost more then 15 Euro's.Also bought a Jaws coffeemug! mahler3 and Ren 2
publicist 4,650 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I saw the Blu with some friends and they complained how silly the shark looked and how it moved like a rubber puppet once it was thrust out of the water. I always thought Bruce's somehow suspicious look and erratic movement added to the horror - the unstoppable machine, indeed.Picture quality is superb but you certainly see it was shot 38 years ago. The new documentary is splendid, so for me the book on JAWS on home video is closed by now!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 Why is it out so late in old blighty?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 your namesake looks tough and more manly then ever in 1080p.
Quintus 6,497 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I didn't think it would be possible, but I'm ready to bear witness the unparalleled manliness.
Jill Sandwich 11,166 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 The shark always looked real to me. Xander Harris 1
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 And you are an Aussie, so you've caught them with your bare hands, skinned them and chuck them on the Barby!
Jill Sandwich 11,166 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Like when Batman beats the shit out of the Penguin's shark in Arkham City!
Xander Harris 9,675 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Arkham City wasn't in the Adam West series?
Maurizio 6,913 Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 Finally got this (along with the Indy boxset) from Amazon.I was checking picture and audio quality a few moments ago--stunning work! I still prefer the original mono mix, but I have to say the new 7.1 DTS-MA mix is indeed very well done (at least in the scenes I checked). The music comes out beautifully and organically.I also saw part of the well-done fan documentary The Shark is Still Working. A job done with love and passion and dedication. Too bad it's presented in 4:3 Letterbox format. Also, I think the original score is quite hideous and omnipresent. I see they didn't get the Williams' music cleared for budget reasons (it's a fan-made work), but it's quite strange to see Jaws ripped and analyzed inside out like never before accompained by some random synth music.
Xander Harris 9,675 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I finally got the Jaws book back in stock at Best Buy. The book itself sucks (ugh, why do they call Quint "Sam Quint"?) but man is it nice packaging. Looks great next to E.T., Hook, the Indys, Close Encounters and stuff. The movie looks nice, although I didn't watch it on a very big screen. I only listen to the mono track since the 30th DVD. It's how it should sound and I've realized how strange the modernized surround track sounds, like the shark explosion being completely different. That said, there are some choices with the music score I don't really agree with in the original mix. Some of JW's greatest moments just get lost.Still, I wish we were able to view other classics like this. *cough* Star Wars *cough*
filmmusic 3,270 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I never did get into the Jaws matters. How many differences are there?were all the sound effects changed, or just 1-2 here and there?what are the changes in the music you're saying? i assume you mean in the volume, right?
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I only listen to the mono track since the 30th DVD. It's how it should sound and I've realized how strange the modernized surround track sounds, like the shark explosion being completely different. That's actually how it's supposed to sound. Spielberg even mentioned the shark explosion in the restoration featurette. There's an almost dinosaur like moan that's there as it sinks in the water that wasn't audible in the original mix.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 It is audible in the mono and always has been.
King Mark 3,975 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Is there a reason Jaws was originally in mono soundI've never heard of a movie in mono before
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted October 13, 2012 Author Posted October 13, 2012 In those days it was very normal to release a film in mono only. While some high profile films had a stereo or even surround track, it was far more an exception then a rule.
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 I generally don't care for or against surround upmixes, unless they're supposed to be clearly inferior to the original audio. But normally, I prefer stereo (or surround) upmixes to the original mono if the music was recorded in stereo. I guess ideally they should offer a mix blending the original mono dialogue/fx track with the stereo score.
A24 5,156 Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Mono, stereo, surround ... as long it sounds good, right?
Quintus 6,497 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Finally sampled my Jaws blu for the first time since receiving it. HOLY SHIT IT WAS A REVELATION. The print is just amazing considering the age of this film. After checking out a couple of the GORGEOUS daylight scenes early on (the lengthy single shot dialogue scene on the car ferry is one of this movie's very best scenes) I skipped to the legendary "swim for it Charlie!" part (mainly to hear how John's theme kicked in compared to the dvd) and I couldn't believe how good the clairity was in those night shots - the water and the broken jetty looked like Spielberg staged it just last night!Absolutely beautiful job there, Universal. Thank you. Now I just need to find two quiet hours in which to actually watch the whole thing...
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 It's a stellar release!
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Jaws was clearly filmed in 2012 and they used vintage 1975 automobiles.John Williams should have gotten an Oscar nomination for that score.
Quintus 6,497 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Watched The Shark is Still Working on my Jaws disc. I can see why it took so long to get this made because it is quite messy, but it's still an affectionately made and worthwhile look back at that most seminal movie of movies. It was nice to see some thought dead faces pop up for interviews (Mrs Kitner and her never ending slapping requests story!) and it was also quite sad to see Brody looking very, very old. He narrated the whole thing too, which was kind of him and quite fitting. What a great actor and man he was.
Nick1Ø66 8,330 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I was really looking forward to that doc, given how many things I'd heard about it for so long. I was actually a little disappointed and found it disjointed, and oddly depressing in a way.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 29, 2013 Author Posted January 29, 2013 It's a nice docu. A little bit overhyped though....
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted January 29, 2013 Author Posted January 29, 2013 It was good, but not as good as I imagined. Not much that we hadn't heard before.
