Jay 46,241 Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I was going to suggest turmeric for the rice as well
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 tonight I'm making meatball stew for tomorrow ,I'll roll a couple pounds of hamburger that I've seasoned with just salt, pepper and garlic. I will cook those in the oven for about 20 minutes just to render the fat.Meanwhile:I will caramalize some pearl onions, then sautee in some celery and carrots, I will add a few cans of beef broth, some kitchen bouquet.I will add the meatballs and let them simmer for about 3 or 4 hours.then I will thicken the broth with cornstarch to make a nice gravy. we will eat over butter rice.as for tonight, we'll have quite a few trick or treaters so I will probably just pick up some KFC
Jay 46,241 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Free wings and beer for me tonight at a Yelp event
Jay 46,241 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Yea, its pretty awesome. I'm glad Marcy's a Yelp Elite
Wojo 2,458 Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 I don't know what Yelp is.And yes, I did just Google it, so no cutesy lmgtfy from the help.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 It's a site where you can review businesses. I enjoy reading customer experiences with places I used to work at, or local restaurants.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 You mean Coriander?NO, cilantro is the leafy plant, coriander is the seed. very different in flavor.saffron is very very expensive(the most expensive in the world), but a tiny amount goes a long way. Tumeric is a substitute different in flavor but does color the dish similarly. One of my absolute favourite recipes with chicken and saffron is this one:1 whole chickenFor the marinade:2 teaspoons ground coriander2 teaspoons ground ginger2 teaspoons ground cumin4-5 tablespoons olive oilblack peppersaltMix all the marinade ingredientsCut the chicken into four pieces (two breasts, two drumsticks), put them in a plastic bag (or bowl), add the marinade, rub it in, and let it soak in over night. Then you need:2 fennel bulbs2 large onions1 handful of cilantro4 cloves of garlic2 pickled lemons70 g olivessome saffron1/2 litre of chicken brothCut each fennel bulb into 8 pieces. Cut the onions into thicker pieces. Cut the stems off the cilantro. Cut the garlic into slices.Heat a large pot, put in 2 tablespoons of oil and roast the chicken pieces on all sides for 5-10 minutes. Take them out of the pot, put in the fennel, onion, cilantro stems and garlic, and roast them as well for a few minutes.Add the chicken, the whole olives, the chopped pickled lemons and the saffron.Add the broth.Close the pot so that no steam escapes and let it simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Stir occasionally. Then scrape the meat off the chicken, chop it, and put it back into the pot. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and the leaves of the cilantro.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Goddamn I need to learn how to cook. I can make pancakes and cake, and that's about it.Brother made this a few times and it's delicious:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0_ar9rqx4kI should attempt it myself one of these days.
Jay 46,241 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Ate WAAAAAAY too many wings last night, feel gross today. Still burping up a blend of all 4 flavors I had
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 1, 2012 Author Posted November 1, 2012 Yeah hate that bloated feeling. Moderate Jason.... Your intake I mean. I used to gorge myself and always regret it.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 1, 2012 Author Posted November 1, 2012 Nothing is free, you are paying for them now!
Wojo 2,458 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 What flavors, Jay? I haven't had chicken wings since the Thursday night Steeler loss, so I'm developing a craving for another round.
Jay 46,241 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Asian Chili PepperParmesan GarlicHoney BuffaloBuf-a-QueAll were REALLY good, but the Honey Buffalo were my favorite. Amazing, among the best wings I've ever had.Got a free UFO Pumpkin beer too, which was also really good (and I don't normally like pumpkin beers at all)
Wojo 2,458 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Munchos gracias.I need to get some pumpkin beer. I haven't had any yet this season. Pumpking is very good.
Jay 46,241 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 The UFO was definitely great, and I've heard the Sam Adams pumpkin is good this year too
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Goddamn I need to learn how to cook. I can make pancakes and cake, and that's about it.get yourself a basic cooking book. go to a used bookstore and find an older Better Homes and Garden cookbook. The older ones are not clutter by attempts to make healthier and less tasty versions of classic recipes.Use quality ingredients. Never use anything but butter or real margarine, spreads are not margarine or butter and are awful products. Use corn or canola oils. Never use olive oil to fry, Reserve it for dips and marinades, as it has too low a burning point.Remember when buying hamburger the cheaper 70-30, 73-27 hamburger is actually the best meat. The so called ground chuck and ground round/sirloin are never what they are called, they are just 80-20, 85-15, or 90-10. The lower the fat content in ground beef the tougher and dryer it will be.Fresh veggies are best, then frozen, then canned. Always drained canned veggies and add your own water. When making homemade tacos don't buy taco seasoning, make your own, you can easily eliminate much of the salt in your mix and still make great taco's.Never buy low fat/no fat or lite versions of cheeses. They are poor quality products loaded with salt. Some cheeses are naturally low fat, those are fineNever buy low fat/no fat mayo or sandwich spreads. Get the real stuff and just use less.Drink 2 % or whole milk, it's the best source of calcium and your body absorbs calcium from it much much better than from pill supplements.Use lots of onions, celery and garlic in your recipes.Start with the basics before you try the harder stuff.Learn to cook eggs by soft scrambling them, frying them over easy, and by poaching. Get those down and you'll be on your way.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 1, 2012 Author Posted November 1, 2012 Sauerkraut with sausage and bacon slices.
alicebrallice 134 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 eating while jwfanning? been there done that.I had a chicken burger with veggies and basil mozzarella.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 1, 2012 Author Posted November 1, 2012 Ive been eating and JWFanning since the year 2000, my dear....
hornist 1,261 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 Your delicious and salty looking portion desperately shouts a drink, cold beer!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 1, 2012 Author Posted November 1, 2012 I dont drink beer.I had a glass of wine at the sauna though.
Melange 448 Posted November 1, 2012 Posted November 1, 2012 I had a glass of wine at the sauna though.I like your style!
hornist 1,261 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 NO! It's beer that belongs to the sauna. And maybe cider...I'm the official sauna-officer here in this forum.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Only is you know what "löyly" is, will I accept your Sauna superiority over me!Cider sounds good though.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Dave wants to go eat at Paula Deens, we might have to head to Mississippi tomorrow. It costs 12.99 a person at lunch, and 21.99 for a person for supper, beginning at 4pm. The trick is to arrive at 3:45/3:50 pay the lunch price but eat the dinner buffet. The waitress let us in on that trick on our first visit a few years back. Her cornbread dressing is damn near perfect, almost as good as mine.
alicebrallice 134 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 NO!It's beer that belongs to the sauna. And maybe cider...I'm the official sauna-officer here in this forum.hornist, do you have your own sauna? in my mind, all finns have one in their home.I wish I had one.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 I thought all Swedes had their own Sauna!Another fantasy crushed....
alicebrallice 134 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I have a couple of friends who have their own saunas, and I used to live in an apartment that had one in the basement that everyone in the building was free to use. lots of parties there... good times.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Most saunas here tend to be mixed. How is this in Sweden and the Finnish lands?
alicebrallice 134 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I don't know about finland but I've never seen a public mixed sauna (in wellness centers, swimming halls etc) here.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 They seem to be very common here. (though the wellness centre I frequent does have a weekly "ladies day")The thing is that it really isn't very erotic. Everyone is very relaxed and at ease. The usual tension associated with nudity is completely gone.
hornist 1,261 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Only is you know what "löyly" is, will I accept your Sauna superiority over me!Where on earth did you learn that word "löyly", Stefan? For those who don't know it is the steam and the associated heat in a sauna in finnish. This day I nominate you, meneer Cosman, as an associate sauna-officer of the JWFan.hornist, do you have your own sauna? in my mind, all finns have one in their home.Sure I have one in my house. And a couple more in the summer cottage. I'm a big fan of sauna...
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Hornist, I know what I'm talking about!Went though 5 sessions yesterday. hornist 1
Brónach 1,330 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Northerners with saunas.Personally, I've been in a sauna once and I found it terribly unpleasant. Maybe if I went living up there I'd end up changing my mind.
gkgyver 1,647 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Sauerkraut with sausage and bacon slices. And I thought nothing grosses me out like Sauerkraut and Bratwurst. And now I've got this ...Do you have to disgrace the bacon?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 Bacon suffers no disgrace. It is the most holiest of meats! For tonight: Pork sausages, rice and assorted veggies. Simple but tasty.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 since it's cold tonight I'm doing chili, I do add beans to stretch it, but I add navy beans since I like them best and they somewhat disappear in the chili.
Jay 46,241 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I made chili yesterday, sweet potato chili, in the crock pot. Our kitchen smelled like heaven all day (though that also could have been because Marcy made Green Tomato Relish with all the tomatoes we took in from our garden before Sandy came by)
Ollie 1,375 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I might pick up some fresh sushi on my way home tonight.I'm also craving fried chicken.
BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Keep the photos coming Steef. This thread has just gone up in awesome. More people should post photos of their food.BUT, with all this praise, there is some criticism. My friend, I am worried about all the sausage you are consuming post-break up.
Ollie 1,375 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Me too. Terry Bradshaw sold me on it.You're bad. That was a funny moment.Keep the photos coming Steef. This thread has just gone up in awesome. More people should post photos of their food.BUT, with all this praise, there is some criticism. My friend, I am worried about all the sausage you are consuming post-break up.Sometimes a love or loss of a woman can push a man to extreme things.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 The only sausages ill be eating are pork or beef! I've lost over 8 kilos (18 us pounds) in 6 weeks, trying to regain a bit of that. Hopefully in muscle this time.
BLUMENKOHL 1,110 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Fatten yourself up Dutchboy! INSPIRATION from 'MURICA:
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted November 5, 2012 Author Posted November 5, 2012 I like a big butt, but that's pushing it....
hornist 1,261 Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 First I thought it was a couch! But it's more important you have got an appetite Steef! And I see enough vegetables...
