Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 10 years of schooling to pay off will do thatAh, yes yes, that explains it. I'll call you Doc from now on
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 If you don't like Sousa marches, you're either not a fan of good music, not a fan of American patriotic and historic music, or just absurd. The same goes for Henry Fillmore, Karl King, and any other writer of good marches about a century ago.Are you kidding me? I've played hundreds of Sousa marches in bands for years, and they're ridiculous. 95% of them are virtually the same exact structure, orchestrations, style, sound, etc. It's like easy listening to the tenth degree (my grandparents love them). Great for patriotic festivals and such, but I don't find much musical value in them.Disclaimer: the opinions expressed in this post may be partially affected by the author having been relegated to playing continuous afterbeats on the French horn for every Sousa march ever
Joe Brausam 234 Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 1st strain..2nd strain..trio...recapitulation..*yawn*
Mr. Breathmask 624 Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 Somehow I always associate the name Sousa with British silliness rather than American patriottism...
Wojo 2,458 Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 Well I'm in a community band, and we play Sousa/Fillmore/King marches all the time, so they've all grown on me. I can see how the French horn parts would be rather dull, but I play a woodwind instrument so the parts are mostly runs, which I don't really mind after so many years. Even our Christmas shows had a Sousa song in it. Marches are easy songs to play, don't require much practice*, and since most of the shows we play have patriotic spins or are attended by older people, the crowds love them.* Entry of the Gladiators, Thunder & Blazes, and Barnum & Bailey's Favorite notwithstanding...ouch...And yes, Marc, I've only played The Liberty Bell on two occasions, but it will always belong to the Flying Circus...
Richard P 5,302 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I'm waiting for that to get a proper release over here, which I don't think is until 2009.
Delorean90 47 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I just spent the most I've ever spent on a non-boxed set release, and it will be totally worth it. For $102.50, I won a brand new, sealed copy of the Intrada release of Miracle on 34th Street - Bruce Broughton
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Nice score but I wouldn't have paid that much. If I would have known you were willing to pay that much I would have sold you my copy. Seriously though, if you can afford it then it's worth whatever one wishes to pay for it.
Neimoidian 15 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 $ 102.50 is ... quite a lot of money. One could have fed the third-world with that...

Trent B 354 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Well hey if a person is willing to spend that much on a CD if they want it that bad, then that's their choice. I am willing to spend up to $200 on an OOP CD if I want it bad enough. My only stipulation is that it's gotta be A: sealed or B: in mint condition. I missed out on the release for Predator because at the time I didn't I didn't quite know about the labels releasing limited edition stuff. I wanted the CD badly enough so I hunted it down on ebay and then managed to get one for $150 sealed. I didn't mind paying that much for it.
indy4 160 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I too got a few classical pieces recently, all on iTunes:- "Symphony No. 3 Slavyanska" (all 4 movements)- "Incantation and Dance"- Semper Fidelis"Search Einaudi and listen to the track Primavera. I wanna know what you think. Finally got a chance to listen to it. It's very very good. Great work with the piano and the strings. And it really intensifies near the end.

If you want something that's at a ridiculous price, just find it on the internet. If it's OOP, no one is making money other than that greedy person selling it. I can understand wanting to own things, but damn that's a lot of money. I remember the days when I was willing to pay $200 for The Poseidon Adventure / The Paper Chase. I ended up getting the actual CD for free.Search Einaudi and listen to the track Primavera. I wanna know what you think. Finally got a chance to listen to it. It's very very good. What is it to you anyways? If he felt it was worth that much to him and wanted to pay that much for it, then fine that's his choice. We can't tell him how much he should pay for a CD and it seems you never bothered to read my post.
indy4 160 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 A CD is worth however much a buyer wants to spend on it.Nothing wrong with going all out every once in a while.
QMM 4 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 picked up Benjamin Button on iTunes. I'm saving listening to it for the plane ride home, but I was surprised to find that it's 2 discs. First being Desplat's score and the second being little excerpts from the film along with source music. Desplat's comments on how he did the score in the liner notes are also very interesting (writing themes that can be played backwards and forwards)

MattyO 72 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I just picked up The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in a store in Perth. Can't wait to give it a proper listen as Alexandre Desplat is a composer I have sadly overlooked in the past. I can say the album presentation is great (and relatively cheap considering the 2-discs of music).
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 You're a dentist?Part time. Good one.
Delorean90 47 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 A CD is worth however much a buyer wants to spend on it.Nothing wrong with going all out every once in a while.Yeah, well...this was about my limit, at least at this point, and I'm definitely going to be watching my spending after this (in addition to my other recent CD purchases). Basically, Broughton is one of my very favorite composers, and this was a score of his that I wanted a lot, but I missed out on it. With no guarantee of any possibilities for reissues later, and this being a new, sealed copy among a limited number, this was something that I really wanted to own legitimately, so I went for it.
MattyO 72 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I just received my copies of The Wind and the Lion and Alien. This weekend is going to be a great listening experience with vintage Goldsmith and a brand new Desplat. Plus, next week on Christmas Day I'll finally be able to open up the Blue Box!!!
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I know my brother ordered a few CD's that came out last Tuesday. Desplat's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Zimmer's Frost/Nixon, and I believe the third was Iglesias' Che. So yeah, I'll be getting those this weekend.
MattyO 72 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I've ordered Frost/Nixon from Amazon, should arrive in a week or so. I've also got a couple of Horners coming my way and I think the next Goldsmith I'll buy will be the Omen trilogy box from Varese.
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I think the next Goldsmith I'll buy will be the Omen trilogy box from Varese. That can't be wrong.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I think the next Goldsmith I'll buy will be the Omen trilogy box from Varese.Order that from Amazon as well. I think the price is like $20 or something for all 3.EDIT: Yep, I was right. Check it out.
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 He'll have to order from Amazon UK. Might not be that cheap.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 It's 18 euros from Amazon UK. I don't know how many dollars that it.
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I believe it should be around $27.00 US.
paleo 78 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Received my Batman TAS CDs yesterday. Didn't really have much time to listen to them yet, but it sounds pretty good...
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I'm contemplating on getting that, along with The Matrix Deluxe Edition.
Trent B 354 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 You should get The Matrix Deluxe Edition, Koray. While it may not be the complete score but there's quite a lot of good cues from the complete score that are finally officially released. It's a great CD to have, even if you have the original OST since the Deluxe Edition doesn't have "A Virus".
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Yeah I think I'll order that this weekend. I have the sequel scores, and never got around to buying the OST, so this is a good opportunity to own the trilogy.
Trent B 354 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I still need to buy Reloaded and Revolutions on CD....might do that next month.
MattyO 72 Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Wow, that was a good deal on Amazon. Omen Trilogy: Ordered!
Delorean90 47 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I'm contemplating on getting that, along with The Matrix Deluxe Edition.I just got it in the mail today, and I can say it's absolutely worth it, Koray. I'm up to "Vendetta" now, and this release is a real treat. Both parts of "Two-Face" have some of the best music written for the show, and it's all terrific stuff. The "Gotham City Overture" has some good thematic representation of stuff I'd love to have episode scores for, such as Batgirl's theme and the theme from "The Man Who Killed Batman" (a real treat). It's just really good. I'm also amazed at the sound they were able to get out of the relatively small ensemble, also. Great stuff.
MattyO 72 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I can't wait for my Batman set, should come next week. I've been listening to The Wind and the Lion, stunning stuff. I'm going to give Alien a proper listen now.
Jay 46,242 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Alien is simply amazing. Intrada did a top, top notch job presenting a very, very cool score
MattyO 72 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 You're right Jason, it really is. The entire score is just this building tension and then that beautiful main theme, which I guess is Ripley's theme. I've listened to random tracks from the score before, but I didn't get it until now, after listening from beginning to end. Really great stuff, as is The Wind and the Lion. What can you say about Horner's "Aliens" score?
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 Aliens is a lot of overblown fun, rehashing some stuff you might know from elsewhere, but very well crafted and entertaining. I still think Davis learned a lot from orchestrating for Horner, the sentinel music in Matrix is very reminiscent of some stuff from Aliens.
paleo 78 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I'm contemplating on getting that, along with The Matrix Deluxe Edition.I can really recommend the Matrix DE CD. There are some nice new pieces; definitely worth listening...
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 I still think Davis learned a lot from orchestrating for Horner, the sentinel music in Matrix is very reminiscent of some stuff from Aliens.Yeah, I watched some of The Matrix on TV a couple days ago and realized that some of the music is exactly the same as from Aliens.
Trent B 354 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The Don Davis of today is still better than Horner of today.
