Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The Don Davis of today is still better than Horner of today. What has he done lately? Does he get regular work?
Trent B 354 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The Don Davis of today is still better than Horner of today. What has he done lately? Does he get regular work?I think he mostly does concert stuff now.
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Yeah, I watched some of The Matrix on TV a couple days ago and realized that some of the music is exactly the same as from Aliens. There's nothing in there that's exactly the same. Not even in Matrix Revolutions, although that always was a bit too Horner-ish in style for me.
MattyO 72 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I've had an Amazon pre-Christmas splurge and bought: Willow, Legends of the Fall, An American Tail (actually off eBay), Brother Bear (I'm already regretting this one) and The Rescuers Down Under. Should be a fun batch!
Red 75 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Home Alone 2.For how much?About $44 for the OST (plus faster more expensive shipping). I considered getting the Varese 2-disc release, but it was way too expensive.

I considered getting the Varese 2-disc release, but it was way too expensive.Wow!I remember winning the OST on eBay for like $20. That was the first thing I ever bought off eBay. Then I learned about the Varese 2-disc and got that. I would have sold you mine if I knew you would pay that much Yeah, I watched some of The Matrix on TV a couple days ago and realized that some of the music is exactly the same as from Aliens. There's nothing in there that's exactly the same. Not even in Matrix Revolutions, although that always was a bit too Horner-ish in style for me.There's the one bit that does the DUN! pause DUN DUN! pause DUN! repeat. That's straight from Aliens.

I would have sold you mine if I knew you would pay that much The cheapest I found the Varese set was at around 70 dollars, and it was even higher on Ebay (upwards of $90). I guess that's what happens when you try to buy a limited release that's sold out. I do wish I had gotten it cheaper.
Nick Parker 3,049 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Great. Well, that is one more John Williams album that I will probably never own....

I knew people would be kicking themselves in the ass for missing out on it when they had more than a chance to get it.
John Crichton 4 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Even though it's little more than a collectable dust collector.John- ducking
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 "Christmas Star" farts in your general direction!
John Crichton 4 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 ...Is there someone else up there we can talk to?
Delorean90 47 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Even though it's little more than a collectable dust collector.John- duckingYou are being facetious, right?
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Even though it's little more than a collectable dust collector. For most of the year it is. But I still say it's probably better than the first score, and the expanded release is considerably better than the old one.
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 But I still say it's probably better than the first score"Star of Bethlehem" farts in your general direction!
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 How so? It's in both scores, it's the best song in each of them, and its best version is in HA2.
Red 75 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Even though it's little more than a collectable dust collector.John- duckingI'm familiar enough with the score to know that isn't true. But if it is, then I'm sure glad I didn't buy the 2-disc version.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 With the 2-disc version, you don't need the first score or the OST for Lost In New York.
Red 75 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 With the 2-disc version, you don't need the first score or the OST for Lost In New York. Why wouldn't you need the first Home Alone? And besides, if I was going to get the 2-discer it would be instead of the OST, not in addition to it.

Trent B 354 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Home Alone is still a good score in itself and there's still good amount of music missing. By the way Koray is right with having the 2-CD set for Home Alone 2 you don't need the OST. Red, you're putting down a version of the score that you probably haven't heard yet...you should really buy it it's worth owning.
Red 75 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Red, you're putting down a version of the score that you probably haven't heard yet...you should really buy it it's worth owning.I'm sure it is, but I'm not prepared right now to shell out 70+ dollars for it so I opted to get the OST. I'm sure I'll be content with that.

Hitch 60 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Recently bought Sibelius' Rondo of the Waves
Ray Barnsbury 8 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 How so? It's in both scores, it's the best song in each of them, and its best version is in HA2. Which version is that? I can't think of any offhand that are better than those in "Follow That Kid!", "Setting the Trap," "The Attack on the House," and the song sung by the church choir.

Hitch 60 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 What's that? Is it good?Yes it is. http://www.finnishgifts.com/sibelius-rondo-waves.html

I can't think of any offhand that are better than those in "Follow That Kid!", "Setting the Trap," "The Attack on the House," and the song sung by the church choir. The choral Star of Bethlehem in HA2, with a new orchestral arrangement and an adult choir. But of course, there's plenty of wonderful original material in the score as well, like the Duncan's Toy Store stuff.Yes it is.Ah, more original versions. Interesting!
Ollie 1,375 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas is the highlight of the score. I would hardly say HA2 is a re-hash. Yes the themes are carried over but Williams also composed new themes / underscore, did some re-arranging of the "Holiday Flight / Making The Plane" theme and the album also presents source cues as well as a curious alternate.
Delorean90 47 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Yes. Both scores are wonderful and have their own stuff going on, and both deserve to be in any film score collection.
Morlock 12 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 "Christmas Star" is the highlight of the score for me. It's not that the score's a re-hash, it's just a bit...diluted.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Just bought:The Village - James Newton HowardGood... good...

There's plenty of new material to make it a worthwhile score, but it's not original or structured well enough to compare with the first (for example, that wonderful Kevin-running-downstairs-on-Christmas-morning version of "Somewhere in My Memory" from the original is used at least twice very close together in HA 2, sort of diffusing its effectiveness).
Delorean90 47 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Just bought:The Village - James Newton HowardGood... good...Very good.Yes indeedy, and it's my first actual Howard score purchase. I've got a bunch that I want, but generally limited editions have taken more priority than OSTs lately.
Red 75 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 The Village is one of JNH's best. You've made a considerably wise purchase.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Finally got my hands on The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, and Che. Also just got Revolutionary Road in the mail today.Right there, four out of the five scores that will be nominated. Don't know the situation with Che though, and if it can be nominated.
Joe Brausam 234 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Tchaikovsky's Complete Symphonies - Leonard Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic
Delorean90 47 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 The Village is one of JNH's best. You've made a considerably wise purchase.Definitely. The JNH scores that I most want to get right now are Unbreakable, Signs, Dinosaur, and Peter Pan, but there are still others that I'd like to get my hands on.
Morlock 12 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I think that the first two are superior to the latter two. I find Dinosaur to be fun, but overrated. Peter Pan I like better, but JNH's best work to date are in those Shyamalan films (not the last two- those are good, but not up there, IMO).
Trent B 354 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I just bought used copies of The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions CD's from MovieMusic for $7.99 each. I don't have those on CD yet so thought it would be a good idea to buy them now and finish up that collection.

Good idea; did the same thing recently with Matrix Reloaded, but paid less for a new and sealed copy at Amazon market place ;-)

Morlock 12 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 Nope. Not as good as the three great scores that proceeded it.
