Thanks, Incanus!

I understand that PJ wanted Tom Bombadill in "LOTR", but couldn't find a way to shoehorn him in. Is this true?

I think they chose not to have him in the film in the first place since his appearance would have stopped the momentum of the main plot. But I don't think they ever planned to have him in the films, nor the Old Forest episode, nor the Barrow Downs. They cut a lot of these rather unique moments for the sake of time and pacing.

...sooooooo....why was "the scouring of the shire" cut? In the book (and the excellent Radio 4 series) it really re-inforces the story as Sam's, an not Fodo's, as most people thought.

In filmic narrative it would have been anticlimactic after the apocalyptic events of the War of the Ring. Plus the running time would have been seriously lengthened by it. The Scouring's lessons of how war affects even those that are not in the middle of it, how evil can't be defeated by a single all cleansing act and how the Hobbits had grown on their adventures to be able to resist evil on their own as they had matured and seen the war and had found courage are important but I agree that they could not have a 1½ hour denouement with another conflict and another set of epilogue scenes after the actual war was over. One of those things that works well in the book and not so well in a film. They do homage the Scouring in the Mirror of Galadriel scene, where a glimpse of that future is seen but it is averted since the Ring was destroyed. Or that is how the film makers explained it.

Thanks, to both Faleel, and Blood. My next question is: why did he not complete the whole story?

Because he died.

It already felt anticlimatic to me in the book.

Maybe in a four film series. Or in the structure of a TV series with infinite budget. Series with cohesive Breaking Bad type of storytelling without filler seem to tolerate epilogues like this quite well.

I wish they had filmed the Scouring anyway and included it in the EE version of the film or something.

Hey, they rebuilt Hobbiton for the filming of the TH films, they should film it now!

It'll be included at the end of There And Back Again (with Azog replacing Saruman), so we'll get to see it after all.

A very good answer. Thanks.

What was the last score to be credited to Johnny Williams, what was the first score to be credited to John Williams, and why is "The Long Goodbye" credited to

John T. Williams?

I thought I'd read something about the Johnny/John transition in John Takis' liner notes for Heidi, but I can't find it. Anyway, the old Label X release is credited to Johnny, while the new Quartet release credits John.

There are a few early "John Williams" screen credits (Daddy-O in 1958 was "John Williams"). But the formal transition from "Johnny" back to "John" happened circa 1967. Valley of the Dolls had a "John Williams" screen credit (although the soundtrack LP still used "Johnny" on the cover). Fitzwilly had "Johnny Williams," which I believe qualifies it as the last. In 1968, both Land of the Giants and Heidi were "John Williams" -- and for these two productions, both his screen credit AND the original Capitol Records LPs had "John" on the cover. The fact that the Label X CD of Heidi uses "Johnny Williams" is one of the errors on that release.

I was listening to John Williams' Earthquake soundtrack album that I recently purchased and noted that the track 9 and 10 must have switched places in the track list since they do not seem to correspond to the music. I. e. For Remy should be track 9 and Medley should be track 10 and not the other way around as it says in the track list. Am I correct in assuming this?

Yes, you are right Mikko. Check out my analysis of the score on this website if you cannot rest until you know what the medley consists of.
