It's a poorly chosen name for those sets, I completely agree.

Basically: The OSTs are Shore's normal album arrangements, some of which were assembled before scoring sessions were completed, and all of which were assembled before EE recording sessions took place. On top of that, for many cues he wrote several versions, and a lot of times he chose a version for the album different than the version chosen for the film. Beyond that, the albums aren't really in chronological order and sometimes feature tracks containing bits and pieces of music from different parts of the film together in one track.

For the CR sets, they are more or less the film version of each cue in film order, including EE Inserts. They are not structured like the specialty labels do things where you have a bonus section at the end with alternates, etc - just the full film score, from beginning to end, in order, one version of each cue (for the most part). So, us superfans have to scrounge around the OSTs, Rarities disc, DVD menus and special features, and video games in order to collect all the various alternates, many of which are preferred over the final film / CR versions.

Whats interesting is sometimes the EE version was the "original" version, and the TE version was the "revised" version.

Yes the name is a bit grandiloquent when you consider the content and could not live up to "Complete Recordings" title when there are a good few of us shall we say "more than interested" fans around. I think only the 1 month worth of continous audio that was finally recorded for the trilogy would suffice as Complete Recordings for us. :P

Posted

Indeed. I mean, they are complete in that you can't hear anything in the actual (EE) films that isn't on the CRs, but Complete "Recordings" indicates all alternates are included too, I would argue.

Given that CR sets present you with 10 hours of music already and that three 70+ minutes OST give you even more material (not counting the Rarities), I'd say we got more than anyone can possibly absorb. I have no need for anything "comprehensive".

Only on FOTR. For some reason they retained a lot of the tracking decisions from the final film on the CR set.

Though TTT has two tracks that have VERY similar Shire theme sections (Elven Rope, The Entmoot Decides) and one of those has an alternate using the Fellowship theme (much like Tales That Really Matter does)

Posted

So are these really tracked or just film versions with some inserts?

Karol

Really tracked, its the EXACT same section of music and waveform.

there are also film edits (Pass of Caradhras is a notable one) and dropped out elements (choir, instruments etc.).

Oh OK interesting. But since I've never notices, it's not an issue. :)

Got Jurassic Park. No more listening to it on Spotify with ads!

Wow, that was fast! My FOTR and ROTK LE arrived yesterday, and I just ordered them on Friday! Wasn't even Prime titles, they were from third party sellers!

Anyways, both of them are super nice, with bigger booklets than their normal counterparts. I think the FOTRone has more lyrics than the nonormal booklet, I'll have to check.

Never heard this recording by Rattle, but I heard CBSO live on several occasions now (playing everything from Beethoven to John Williams) and it is a splendid band.

Rattle's Birmingham Sacre used to be considered one of the best, at least a while ago (at the time before he became chief in Berlin). Dunno what it's standing is today, but I think it's very good, and I have several other Rattle/CBSO pairings which I also like.

FOTR is not the only CR with film edits sadly.

Can please state specific examples.

Gandalf the White is missing a few seconds of Fangorn material (after the small stones choral bit).

The Tales That Really Matter has an extra note in the film (though it is most likely tracked)

The Stairs of Cirith Ungol is missing cor anglais

Grace of Undomiel has a intro which is only present on the OST and CR end credits

Anduril - Flame of the West: The transition between the big buildup and the Silver Trumpets theme (without the Rivendell theme) sounds a bit clunky compared to the OST version...

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields has an intro and additional brass overlays on the OST that are not present on the CR.

That is not tracking

But my post that you quoted was me talking about tracking. By quoting it and replying in that way you made it look like I was wrong, when I wasn't.

Just got the Vertigo rerecording and the La La Land Independence Day CD. The sound quality and content on the Independence Day CD are great but the disk is extremely hard to remove from the case. I also had this problem with the La La Land release of The Fury.

That was not my intent.

Yeah I wish that too but in the meantime I thought I'd complete my collection. Now I am missing only a few OOP special releases from my JW discography like Towering Inferno, Conrack/Paper Chase/Poseidon Adventure and Fitzwilly. For a film score collector it really pays off to have a paying job. :)

Thomas and the King by John Williams

Black Beauty by Danny Elfman

Will do as soon as I get the CD and have time to write a thought or two on both. Meanwhile you can read what Indy4 says about Thomas and the King here.

Earlier this week I received in the mail Children of Dune by Brian Tyler for free, from a very generous FSM member. Looking forward to checking it out! (Never heard a note of it or seen the movie)

I have not heard it either but many people cite it as one of Tyler's best works.

Posted

Yes, yes it is! Some of the best TV music I've heard! The second half of the album isn't as good as the first, though.

Posted

I shall find time to listen to it then.

It's probably the best thing Tyler ever wrote, which is not saying much. The percursion is interesting, though

Would you go as far as to say it is pedestrian? ;)

Posted

Yeah, I would :D But as Tyler's scores go, this is the one to get. There's some good stuff in there. And some lousy stuff as well

Picked up The Village and Serenada Schizophrenia used from Amoeba Records in LA today.
