What do you mean?

Why would you buy both versions? Does the regular edition have stuff not on the special edition?

Last year it was the case (alternate passages inside tracks, not new entirely different cues though), so we expect the same this time as well.

The tracklist hasn't been announced yet, so nobody knows (and even then, we might not know until someone compares both).

With AUJ, there was about 2 1/2 minutes on the standard OST different than their Special Edition counterparts, including the best version of the Misty Mountains theme, a cool version of the Erebor theme, and another version of Gandalf's fireworks motif.

Not to mention the packaging is completely different, with totally different pictures and different notes.

Plus I have the regular and standard versions of all four LOTR/Hobbit scores, so why stop with DOS?

Which contains e.g. both John Williams' Devil's Dance and 3 Pieces from Schindler's List and Christopher Gunning's Poirot Fantasy and Firelight suites for violin and orchestra plus intriguing suite from Hidalgo by JNH.

and finally the regular edition of the AUJ

Plus I pre-ordered both versions of the DoS soundtrack.

Oh I forgot about this album. Need to give it a listen sometime.

It has been a while since I heard the album but I thought it was nice adaptation of Gerswin's music work violin and orchestra. I too need to revisit the CD.

Both versions of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug :)

Pre-ordered. Richard. I too have pre-ordered both versions of DOS, as well as The Book Thief.

My Pacific Rim and Game of Thrones Season 3 arrived this week.

Posted

Yeah, should have specified it was a pre-order!

The Varese is a completely different recording by a larger/better orchestra.

I vastly prefer it, despite the brief running time.

It should be rereleased. I only have a CDR of that somewhere.

Both are out of print.

Redundant release!

Are you talking to me?

Stefan means that there is THE definite release of The Superman The Movie score on the Film Score Monthly's Superman 8 CD Boxed Set with improved sound and even more material (the Rhino release contains the whole film score though). Plus that box costs about 120$.

I know, but I have -- absolutely -- no interest in the Superman sequels soundtracks.

Do you know what I do with this kind of boosted releases? I made playlists using only the tracks that were on the original albums... An anniversary or Special Edition release with a lot of unreleased tracks, Bonus tracks, unused tracks, alternative tracks... that really enerves me.

I didn't have the Superman Original CD, so this release will do the job for me! ;)

It also sounds MUCH better though.

That's possible, I will check that. You now, this purchase is in a sense only a way to calm my conscience... :music:

Two new JW themes :znaika:

I'm not sure I even know all the themes he wrote in Superman I :-)

Two or Three themes?

John Williams composed three new themes for Superman IV, attaching to three new characters.

  • "Lacy's Theme," also known as "Someone Like You," is a sultry, sexy melody for the daughter of the new owner of the Daily Planet, who has eyes for Clark Kent.[citation needed]
  • "Jeremy's Theme" is a light, lyrical melody for the young boy who appeals to Superman to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
  • "Nuclear Man Theme" is a driving action theme used for Superman's battle with the villain created when Lex Luthor places Superman's genetic material on a nuclear warhead detonated by the sun.

Rhino set is decent enough, similar in presentation to Blue Box edition. But what you really need to hear from this set is Superman IV. While not written by Williams it uses his every single theme from the first film as well as three new one and two composed by Alexander Courage. Some of the things this composer is doing with the material might not sound like John in style, but they're truly awesome. A reverent but also fresh take.

Just snagged the deluxe edition of Star Trek 2009 for under $50!

Posted

It was $35 when it was released.

Posted

I had to dig in my alternative email history, but I paid $29.98 for it from Varese in May 2010, plus $4.50 shipping.

Posted

How did you get a discount on it? It retailed for $34.98!

EDIT: I guess I was remembering wrong, my email receipt also shows $29.98. Memory can be funny,

Not sure why the heck it's taken so long for me to get this. And I still haven't gotten TWOK yet (though I plan to rectify that soon).

Trying to acquaint myself with more Moross than just his sublime Big Country score.

Finally, I'll be able to compile all the Gerhardt Korngold tracks into one place. This is the very peak of film score bliss.

Been interested in this since reading Benny's complaint's about the cuts made by RVW.

Basically the expansion pack for the Classic Film Score series, with extra Rozsa, Herrmann, Waxman, and Tiomkin tracks. And all the Studio fanfares together at the start of the disc, which is fun. :)

That Much Ado About Nothing cover has seven heads but six names, not counting Doyle. Someone count much?

56 CDs of Bach cantatas by Gardiner during his pilgrimage from December 1999 to December 2000. Did it through Amazon UK. Even though my US Prime membership didn't apply, and even with 2-4 day international shipping, I still saved $60 then if I had done it through Amazon US.

Just got a CD of The River for $25 dollars.

Nice! I think I bought it at a similar price at SAE a couple of years ago. :)
