Naïve Old Fart 13,020 Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Just got a CD of The River for $25 dollars.Nice! I think I bought it at a similar price at SAE a couple of years ago. It's a lovely score, and one of JW's two best of 1984. What do you think of it?

It's a lovely score, and one of JW's two best of 1984. What do you think of it?As you say it is a really lovely score, something entirely different with its rustic Americana that has nice shades of jazzy and bluesy influences. It could not be more different compared to the other score of the year, Temple of Doom.
crocodile 9,724 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I'm halfway through it. Gloomy and suspenseful. Somewhat contradictory as well, in that it merges both Herrmann with more typical modern suspense droning. I'll share more thoughts later.Karol
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Hmm, so somewhat like his score for The Machinist? I forgot about this one, need to pick it up.
Sharkissimo 1,978 Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Music from Graffiti Bridge by Prince
Not Mr. Big 5,011 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I just bought and listened to Sleepers. The orchestra's performance might be the flattest and most unenthusiastic of any modern JW score . The score itself is well written though.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Don't think I've posted here in awhile.Arizona Colt - Francesco De MasiLe Ruffian - Ennio MorriconeLolita - Ennio MorrioconeNebraska - Mark OrtonFalling Down - James Newton HowardBlack Sails - Bear McCrearyStagecoach - Jerry Goldsmith
crocodile 9,724 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 How is the new Lolita release, Koray?Karol
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but Le Ruffian is superb
crocodile 9,724 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 More Morricone on my shelf would be nice, methinks.Karol
publicist 4,650 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 if you get the old one cheaper, go for it. It is around 60 minutes and good as it is, it's more than enough (meaning repetitive)...methinks.
crocodile 9,724 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Blind-bought Superman: The Animated Series and Dead Again. Not sure why, guess I just needed some new stuff to dig into.Karol
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I could have recommended some Morricone in that case
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 What do you already own/have heard?
crocodile 9,724 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Morricone is a bottomless well, really. I have several compilations, his American movie scores and many dramas. But his older stuff and many Italian things are still a great unknown.Karol

I've got a ton of titles to toss out.

I've got a ton of titles to toss out. Yes, recommend me something off beat and quirky. And obscure. Oh I forgot I'm seeing Moericone in concert on 10th. Yay! Karol
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Oh I forgot I'm seeing Moericone in concert on 10th. Yay! 16h for me. Horribly expensive tickets, and the acoustics will suck, but I don't think I'll get another chance to see him live.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 That's my situation, but I've decided it's not worth it. Concerts, for me, need to have good seats to make it a memorable experience. If I'm not in the thick of it, I find little difference than sitting at my desk listening to the music.

Horribly expensive tickets, and the acoustics will suck, but I don't think I'll get another chance to see him live.I managed to combine this trip with other stuff, like catching up with my friends from Berlin and few other things. I'm really looking forward to it.Karol
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 On laptop speakers?I have desktop speakers.
Matt C 605 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I got my copies of Superman: The Animated Series and Book of Blood today. I'll post my reviews in the 'recently listened' thread...
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,383 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 On laptop speakers?I have desktop speakers. You think those compare to a live concert?
Marian Schedenig 11,694 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 They probably are comparable to the sound of an amplified Morricone concert, actually.

Richard P 5,302 Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Currently waiting for Young's Something the Lord Made, a nice score I found on spotify last year.Anyone know why BSX takes forever to ship things? Nothing's happened since 24th Jan.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Well BSX's track record with shipping isn't exactly spotless. Just shoot them an email.
Score_Fan 37 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Pokemon: The First Movie (The Score, not the OST with awful pop songs on it.) I never realized how wonderfully lush and orchestrated this movie's score was.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Can't recall the first movie's score too much, but Pokemon 2000 is a great one. Lugia's Theme is gorgeous.Just placed an order for...and...
Wojo 2,458 Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I'd like for Nemesis to be my last purchase for a while.
Kendal_Ozzel 36 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I managed to snag a used copy of The Eiger Sanction for $21 on Amazon. Just got it in the mail, and it's in great shape. Quite a steal. I'm so glad to finally own this score!Only two more holes in my JW collection: The Towering Inferno and Jaws 2.
Incanus 5,890 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Was that a blind buy or have you heard the score or seen the film Karol?
crocodile 9,724 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I heard the samples on Quartet Records website. And, besides, those Europeans tend to write more imaginative fantasy music anyway. It might be a miss, but at least I have this bloke a chance. Karol
Incanus 5,890 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Finally my latest order arrived carryingThe Blue MaxTo Kill a MockingbirdCutthroat Island the Complete Original Motion Picture ScoreI have some listening to do.
Not Mr. Big 5,011 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Gods and Generals, Van Helsing, The Mummy Returns, Hoodlum, Heaven and Earth, The Right Stuff / North vs. South.
Naïve Old Fart 13,020 Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Karol"GBH" is just about the most fun I'll have listening to a score, this year! The Kamen concerto is a real eye-opener. Really good.
