Incanus 5,890 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Is Enders Game any good? It looks like a kids film, is it? It's on Netflix. No it is not that good. I wasted nearly 2 perfectly good hours on it.
Naïve Old Fart 13,023 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 + 1.(for "AF1"). "Sabrina", anyoine? personally, I detest it, but it does have a lot of love.I like his new TV advert for something-or-other. The custard pie in the face is priceless.
filmmusic 3,270 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 hello.I wanted to ask if "The Best of John Williams" by Hayman, is available only in download and not on cd too.And if it's the first, is there a lossless version,or is it only mp3s?http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.990001

Incanus 5,890 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Aren't those just a bit distorted woodwinds, oboe and clarinet perhaps?

RedBard 71 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Hoping to do another Epic Composer Rap Battle.Any suggestions?

Rachael Foley 10,162 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 What is the percussive (?) sample used in these cues?(1:37-1:58)
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Same thing as in Dennis Steals The Embryo which Williams notates as "synth boo bams." It's one of those classic 80s keyboard synth sounds no doubt, but which, I'm not sure. It's a little bit like the low register of the DX7 marimba. Maybe an Akai thing.
RedBard 71 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Hmm... That Nixon sample sounds like an African pitched percussion instrument.Possibly a large kalimba (I can distinctly hear a slight "twanging" after the attack and during the sustain of each note).
A. A. Ron 2,485 Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 How do I keep a new post from merging into an older one (in the complete cue list thread for example)?
Jay 46,244 Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 You can't. The board automatically combines posts from the same user made twice in a row, if they are less than two hours apart.
Popular Post #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,387 Posted February 5, 2015 Popular Post Posted February 5, 2015 It's very annoying if you are the sort of person who cares about his or her postcount...which I'm not. Jilal, Code 000. Destruct. 0. and A. A. Ron 3

Jilal 681 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Anyone else think Zimmer's theme for Jack Sparrow bears an uncannily similarity to the opening measures of Mozart's Requiem in d-moll? The orchestration is very much alike and the first three chords appear to be identical to me.
BloodBoal 8,711 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Yep, there's definitely a similarity.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Both are in d minor and have that bum-BUM quality. There, the similarity ends. Jack's theme ain't plodding and funereal, and there's a hell of a lot more low brass there than Mozart would have dreamt of. And I hear no parallels in harmony past the first tonic.
Jilal 681 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I persist. They're far too much alike for it to be a case of mere coincidence.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I suggest you try listening in a higher bitrate then.
Hlao-roo 390 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I suggest you try listening in a higher bitrate then.64 kbps ought to be enough for anybody. Jay 1
Jilal 681 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I suggest you try listening in a higher bitrate then.I suggest you come up with better arguments, which "a hell of a lot more low brass" isn't - Zimmer could have impossibly retained Mozart's refined and elegant orchestration for a film like Pirates of the Caribbbean.

It was risky to go for such a current reference, I know. Can't win them all.
Jilal 681 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Very much alike might have been an overstatement, but it's quite clear, as in, the low strings play on the downbeat and higher strings on the upbeat. It's interesting to note as well that not all statements of this phrase of Jack's theme feature the brass section - e.g. the first statement in the series, near the end of Curse of the Black Pearl's 1M6 Captain Jack Sparrow, does not.

Sure, but that would be rather an exhilirating task. I propose we compile an exhaustive catalogue of every instance that happens within the tonality of D-minor with the very same set of chords.

Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 You're referring to 1:26, yes?
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Well it was a bit unclear since you just said Jack's theme. That isn't Jack's theme but a little bit of connective musical tissue.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 A phrase of Jack's theme? I don't think so. Just a transition or piece of underscore. If this is the first Mozart quote you've found in Zimmer, keep digging.
Jilal 681 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 A phrase of Jack's theme? I don't think so. Just a transition or piece of underscore. It's used quite a lot, actually, so I do think it's part of Jack's thematic material..
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I don't know the scores in their complete film versions.Christ I wish I realized you were talking about that specific moment so I could have just not even commented and spared this thread all of these posts.
Jilal 681 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Well, I assumed it would be quite clear, anyway, because of the downright resemblance. This could keep going on forever, and whilst discussing things endlessly is a great form of occupational therapy, I'm sure you've better things to do .
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I smell blatant plagiarism. Wouldn't be the first time, there's plenty of Ave Verum in The Lion King. I'd think that Zimmer is a Mozart fan... but then he raped Don Giovanni for his second Sherlock Holmes score...
Rachael Foley 10,162 Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 I don't know the scores in their complete film versions.I only know the scores from their sessions versions.
