Frankly I'd rather see Spileberg take the reigns and direct a summer "B" film like Transformers.

It would be better than Michael Bay, that's for sure.

put the pipe down Tom, if the man goes begging, which he did, its a sign his clout is dimished.

15 years ago who'd beleive that Spielberg could not get 50 million dollars to make a movie.

He should take a lesson from Durabont, and make Lincoln down and dirty like Frank did the Mist.

Maybe it's just time for him to retire.

15 years ago, Spielberg was still making safe choices, like Hook, or Jurassic Park. And his movies were not being used a pawns in a game between studios like now.

Again, I could say that "Universal is so broke they won't even finance Spielberg's movie" based on the same information as you. Both interpretations would be, as interpretations very often are, wrong.

BTW, that's a cool representation of me in your sig.

Let's all donate $10 each to help the good ship S.S. Poseidon along.

Joe says the sky is blue, Luke says technically its azure, Tom says well its gray here, Datameister says its spelled bleu.

:P Isnt it just shades of cyan in the end? (well except tom's color)

I dont think we are in the same wagon :)

But i suppose you just wanted to call me nitpicker :)

I think they need to film a biopic about William Henry Harrison in the style of 24, in real-time. I think his presidency was short enough that it just might work.

No I think Mark and I have been right and that Spielberg doesn't get the automatic pass he once did, and the fact that Dreamworks has basically failed doesn't say much good.

Now that is an opinion and not news. :D

One of these days some studio is going to look at Steven and say, "you know Steve you're making hits but we're not seeing the same returns. The studio feels we need to step in and make some changes to your film. Dump Williams and get some more contemporary hip composer and then here are some other changes...." etc etc etc

That is why I say what I say.

Frankly I'd rather see Spileberg take the reigns and direct a summer "B" film like Transformers.

I wonder when that will actually happen, like when Hitchcock was being told he was old news and subsequently got rid of Herrmann. The only reason it hasn't happened to Lucas is that Lucas financed his own movies; he set himself up to be such a godfigure that no one could tell him "Dude, you ain't got it no more."

Eww. Then Spielberg, shunned by the studios, turns to his old friend GL to finance his films. With GL giving him creative input. Ewwwwwwwww....... Never. Anything but that. Retire or something before that.

did you guys know that Spielberg's take from Universal Studios in Florida is upwards of 50 million dollars.

Why doesn't he finance it himself.

doesn't seem to have affected the boxoffice Henry,

Um, this whole thread is mainly about how box office doesn't matter.

no Koray it hasn't been. :D

Posted

Considering all the talk about box office grosses and production costs, and Blum's points about box office not being the source of profit after taking all other factors in consideration, yeah it is.

What has it been mainly about for you, Joey? Bashing Spielberg and Williams?

Posted

leave it to you Koray to get it wrong, Blume has 3 posts out of 99. No the thread hasn't been about the boxoffice, it has been about clout and those that agree with Me and Mark that Spielberg's is not what is was.

I'd like to see some figures proving that the economic crisis is having no effect on Hollywood and that Spielberg can't get Lincoln made purely because of his "diminishing clout."

Wasn't there a big recession in the early 1990's?

In Australia there was. It was the one we had to have otherwise we'd have become a banana republic.

And use his own money? You have to be crazy or Mel Gibson to do that.

Yeah. We don't want Mr Spielberg going down the same road GL did by wasting good money on characters like Jar Jar Binks.

Maybe it's more the subject matter and not Spielberg's ability? Economy isn't in great shape, and as I said before, it's not a movie subject that magnetically draws people in. I can perfectly understand why this was turned down.

Really? On his knees?

Is Spielberg shooting it now? What's the latest on this project? It's rumored that he started shooting it in early 2009, for a release in November. Any truth to that?

Posted

Well, if anyone has new info on this, he could post it here.

I'm thinking Spielberg has gotta do SOMETHING this year and the next, besides TINTIN...

Posted

Sorry, I admit I'm selective.

I just don't have the time to read everything that's being posted here... :(

yes,your too busy making polls

Yes, that's it exactly.

Next poll: Which do you like more? Star Wars or Star Trek? :(

Spielberg still has his eye on Lincoln even though Robert Redford is soon to start filming his own film about Lincoln entitled The Conspirators.

Spielberg's Lincoln project has never been in any doubt as far as this observer was concerned. I remember finding this thread to be a tad over zealous when it appeared.

Posted

I am sure Spielberg could finance all of this by himself if it was so important to him...

But I can't say this project has excited me at all - neither for the film or the score - so fine with me.

I guess that's pretty much the nail in the coffin for this film. It's a shame, I was honestly looking forward to it.

Posted

Does this mean Williams will now have time to score Deathly Hallows Part 2? :D

Posted

According to what I've read, Daniel Day-Lewis might end up replacing Neeson for the main role. Also, Spielberg recently said that he spend the last two years putting Dreamworks back on its feet, that's why there was a lack of films from him in that time. However, and if I'm not mistaken, the new deal with Disney says that Spielberg will direct six films in the next years, starting with War Horse. And the following is my own thinking, but if Spielberg is able to get his box-office mojo back, he will be able to direct anything he wants, possibly Lincoln and/or Interstellar. Also, I want him to do Pirate Latitudes. Imagine the score we could get with that one! :D

Posted

No more Indiana Jones. But I'll settle for 6 more JW scores. There's got to be something good to be had in there.

Oh great, another epic, this time a biopic, for Day-Lewis to well and truly smite with his scene decimating ACTING.
