JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 yeah 20 miles is nothing around here.
Wojo 2,458 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Yeah, I used to drive 20 miles one way to go to the nearest restaurant or place to go shopping.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I just realized I need some serious time off just to watch the movies I am getting for Christmas.I have 233 hours of vacation (plus 80 hours of comp time) left at the end of the year and I get 14 hours a month in vacation so I could take off a few days around MLK day and catch up.
scallenger 665 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Update on the Willow BluRay. USA today has an exclusive article that interviews Warwick Davis, with a trailer detailing the release, and a release date: March 12th!http://www.usatoday....ay-dvd/1763809/He also had this to say about a future Star Wars:Davis dropped by Lucasfilm earlier this year during the Willow restoration, and they might be hearing from him again soon to remind them he's ready and available for Star Wars: Episode VII."That's how I got into Episode I, because I kept badgering George for a part," Davis says. "This was in the days before emails and stuff. I used to send faxes. Every now and again, a fax would pop through his machine that said, 'Hey, George, how's it going? Have you got round to making the prequels yet? When you do, just remember me and write short characters.' "Davis says he'd like to play a villain this time, "somebody from the Dark Side," but wouldn't be opposed to reprising his Wicket role."I'm grown up — Wicket could have grown up," he figures. "He's got little Ewoks. I think Han Solo decided he would also stay in the planet with them, he's sick of flying around the galaxy. He's retiring and just hanging out with Ewoks with Leia, happy in their little hut, and then Wicket pops around now and again. I can see it now."Imagine now in my career getting back into an Ewok costume. Wouldn't that be the most bizarre thing? Full circle."Also, the article featured the cover for the BluRay. Not sure what I think of it. Typical I guess.
Wojo 2,458 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 It's not orange and teal? I don't like it, either.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Yeah, that cover is awful! Are we sure this isn't a custom cover by a fan? because it looks so..Oh, I wish they would put the original poster as cover, in an embedded slipcover! I remember seeing that poster for a couple of years in a VIdeo Club near the conservatory I was studying music, and I always wanted to watch the movie based on that! Finally I watched it and loved it!Ah, they don't make movies like this anymore.... (sigh)it's all CGI and CGI without any heart!edit: oops, now I saw that that ugly cover is indeed the real one. It's in the trailer! (Does the film look a bit dark to you?)
Wojo 2,458 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 Even the DVD cover is tolerable.I remember hating it because it traded MacGuffin Elora Danan and the gorgeous Joanne Whalley for those stupid Brownies, but it's more pleasant on the eyes than that yellow monstrosity above. But this must not be coincidence because I just bought the OST last month because it was dirt cheap and it's worth owning. If the BR means a complete score is right around the corner, or achievable via BR audio rip, I'm going to feel like I should buy something else, like Hook or Back to the Future on OST.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 I hope different territories have differenet covers, as such is the case sometimes. (eg. Us and International bluray of Legend)
Quintus 6,496 Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 The one on the right is actually decent.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 both Willow and Legend were films I was told I was supposed to like but I never did.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 both Willow and Legend were films I was told I was supposed to like but I never did.I guess because you didn't watch them during your childhood?although, still I think they are great films!By the way, is there any law about when you can claim some BLurays you found, as your own?regarding those B&N BLurays, 4 days passed and still no reply! (while they said they respond in 12-24 hours).i have sent 2 messages already! I'm not sending a 3rd one!I'm gonna keep them for one month and then sell them.I hope someone doesn't respond after 2 months claiming them back and wants me to pay for them..
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 I think at this point FM they are yours, you've done what you should have done. You were entitled to a timely response and you didn't get one.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 yes, i think so too. unless they are so busy for Christmas. i don't know.Anyway, I'll keep them for one month just in case..
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 During hurricane Sandy they sent a lot of late replies to me when I had my double order. It's possible they're busy but when it reaches multiple days for a simple situation there really is no excuse.
Wycket 36 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 yes, i think so too. unless they are so busy for Christmas. i don't know.Anyway, I'll keep them for one month just in case..Keeping them for a month is reasonable, but honestly if they sent it to you in error that is their loss, not your responsibility. You've gone above and beyond. Plus, Barnes and Noble is a big company so the loss of a few blu-rays will not hurt their bottom line.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Does anyone know what is the cheapest Bluray store in Europe?I have a prepaid card that expires in the end of the month, and I wanted to use the money left to buy Evita Bluray for a present. However, trying amazon.co.uk (which seems the cheapest to me), I'm short of just 1 euro (counting shipping too)!!!It's really a shame for just 1 euro and I was thinking maybe elsewhere is cheaper?
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I see that Disney is releasing the Hunchback of Notre Dame in March on blu. I will have to get that.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I see that Disney is releasing the Hunchback of Notre Dame in March on blu. I will have to get that.Although as a double movie Bluray. I hate those..
Wojo 2,458 Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I see that Disney is releasing the Hunchback of Notre Dame in March on blu. I will have to get that.I've never seen this flick. My hatred for all things Notre Dame is that strong. Roll Tide.

I hate those.. why, the price will be the same as if it's one. And I am rooting for Notre Dame, though the Tide will probably win and keep the SEC dominance alive.
A24 5,156 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Must look glorious. Even the ol' DVD R2 looks good.
A24 5,156 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Maybe that's why it's "not special" over there.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I think most moviegoers don't find Malick special.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I haven't seen Badlands but I have seen all the Mallick films after that and I loved them. (especially Thin Red Line)
Brónach 1,330 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I liked Badlands. Might be my favourite of his.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Maybe that's why it's "not special" over there.I saw it in the theatre.I have my blu ray Coffin set and I have to wait another week to open it. Aaarrrgggghhhhh.
A24 5,156 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I saw Badlands on TV when I was still young and I didn't really like it. Back then, I preferred Bonnie and Clyde because, simply put, the characters were more likeable. The last time i saw Malick's film, I really liked for its strange mood. I don't know why other people like it.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I don't dislike it Alex, I just don't think it's that special. I found it derivative of other films. True the main characters are less likable than Bonnie and Clyde, a better film btw, but they were a different set of creatures than B&C. Their crimes are more blunt and brutal. What I do like about the movie is it does scream 70's.
Brónach 1,330 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 What I do like about the movie is it does scream 70's.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 What I do like about the movie is it does scream 70's.surprising isn't it, even though the events of the film are from the 50's.
Quintus 6,496 Posted December 18, 2012 Author Posted December 18, 2012 Chinatown remains very appealing in that regard, too. And The Long Goodbye, which just has that great seventies vibe in its own right.
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Chinatown remains very appealing in that regard, too. And The Long Goodbye, which just has that great seventies vibe in its own right.i saw Chinatown I think a year ago for the first time.i wanted to love it from all those I had read, but I was bored to death!! I don't know why..It's not that i don't like slow films..
filmmusic 3,269 Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Do you dislike Mad Men?Are you talking to me?I haven't watched them.. Just 5-10 minutes once.I would like to, but I prefer watching films than continuing series..Which also reminds me, I would like to watch Downton Abbey first, because I love such period films..
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Do you dislike Mad Men?if you're talking to me, no, I just dislike the insane praise for an average soap opera. The show in and of it self is okay. if you watch it long enough you get engaged by the characters, but Days of our Lives is better.
A24 5,156 Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Do you dislike Mad Men?WTF? He's talking about Chinatown.
Quintus 6,496 Posted December 19, 2012 Author Posted December 19, 2012 Mad Men has a Chinatown vibe about it in the way it's slow and precise with its scenes and characters. There's a similarity in the way the dialogue has that recognisable deliberate rhythm to it, one can count its beats, that it feels organic and complimentary to the overall aesthetic rather than being the sole dominant element. Oh and I was responding to filmmusic (who said he couldn't get into the film).
A24 5,156 Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 I don't know, Quint. I think linking these two is far from evident, or, like some would say, quite a stretch. I've watched 5 seasons of Man Men now and not once the series reminded me of Polanski's film. The most obvious connection is that Joey doesn't like either of them.Alex
A24 5,156 Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Well, I know David Lynch is a fan of the show. How about that?
Quintus 6,496 Posted December 19, 2012 Author Posted December 19, 2012 He is? Unsurprising, but it's always nice to learn.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Y&R FTWGuiding Light was my soap of choice.I don't know, Quint. I think linking these two is far from evident, or, like some would say, quite a stretch. I've watched 5 seasons of Man Men now and not once the series reminded me of Polanski's film. The most obvious connection is that Joey doesn't like either of them.Alexare you saying I don't like Chinatown, shows you don't know what the hell you're talking about.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 I watched the Mummy last night on Blu.It was amazing for the most part. The grain was never overpowering except in some location shots. Mostly the film looked as if it were made today in black and white.I will watch all 9 films of the Universal Classic Monsters essential collection over the next few weeks. I'll try to watch the Invisible Man tonight.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,386 Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Joe, how does the original King Kong look on Blu? I've only ever seen it on tv in old, faded prints.
ZackR 187 Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Not Joe, but it is absolutely stunning...one of the Crown Jewels of my collection for sure. I can't recommend it highly enough.
