  1. 1. Will Thomas Newman win an Oscar for Bridge Of Spies?

    • Yes, he's been due for ages, abd the combination of Newman/Hanks/Spielberg will seal the deal

It's very likely to get nominated for an Oscar, no question. Unless some REALLy strong score candidates come out in December of this year.

Dreamworks already confirmed Williams will score Spielberg's next film, though.

I can just see it. The film will be a sleeper hit. The score will be massively popular and from now on Spielberg will use Thomas Newman instead of Jogn Williams!

Does Jogn have a silent J like Johann, or is it a fun fat burning exercise?

It would have been really funny if he won an Oscar and Johnny lost the same year for The Force Awakens. ;)

What's even funnier, I can see that happening.

That would be the most painful loss ever. Though I doubt Star Wars will be nominated. None of the prequel scores were.

Too early to tell. Really depends on the success of the film and whether Newman really pulls off somethin different this time. That and and the years sleeper hit with a foreign composer to consider.

No chance at all for a Star wars nom?

I mean unlike the Prequels which were essentially independant films The Force Awakens is an actual Hollywood film.

The best score nominations in this day and age are rarely related to the merits of the scores but rather the merits of the films themselves. It's almost always dramas, usually biographical ones, that get the noms over sci fi action films.

It's very hard for a sequel score to get nonimated these days. Doesn't help that most sequels are naturally big budget blockbusters, which therefore often have lousy score

Add Baños' In The Heart Of The Sea and Geoff Barrow & Ben Salisbury's Ex Machina in there.

Zimmer's The Little Prince too, maybe?

Sea of Trees, man. Mark my words.

Howard Shore would be my first choice for The Revenant. I can't really see Santaolalla doing great with this kind of film and I hope someone more interesting gets the job.

Shore really needs to get some assignments... he has none so far this year.

Yeah, but you know if they'd make an exception for anyone, it's John Williams with his only score of the year. I could see him sneaking in if the movie is actually good and it gets in with a handful of other technical nominations. It could also help that it's a Christmas release, not summer, so it'll be fresher in their minds. Crystal Skull was a disappointment all-around so they didn't feel the need to award him, and he was recognized in all the Prequel years for other movies.

That said, he'd never win whereas Newman totally could...which would be weird.
