I have a hard time ranking comedies and dramas against each other, so I will do separate lists.

Also I'm limiting myself to golden age TV (2000ish and forward). Pre-2000, I loved Newsradio, Friends, Seinfeld, Simpsons, Married With Children, X-Files, Quantum Leap, and Sliders. And I recently saw Twin Peaks for the first time and loved that. Seems weird to try to rank all those against the modern stuff, though.

Dramas

1. Breaking Bad

2. Carnivale

3. Battlestar Galactica

4. Sherlock (BBC)

5. Game of Thrones

6. LOST

7. Dollhouse

8. Hannibal

9. Six Feet Under

10. The Sopranos
Honorable Mentions:

True Detective, The Shield, The Inside, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, Firefly, Boardwalk Empire, Tru Calling, Big Love, Alcatraz

Dishonable Mentions:
Dexter (It was great for 4 seasons, then utter garbage for 4 seasons - so bad that I would never recommend the show to anyone despite its early heights)

Homeland (Started strong but keeps getting stupider all the time)

True Blood (Decent first season then unwatchable after a few years in)

Heroes (amazing first season, then got worse and worse; I never even watched the 4th season)

Comedies

1. Curb Your Enthusiasm

2. Arrested Development

3. Scrubs

4. Modern Family

5. Coupling (UK)

6. Silicon Valley

7. Flight of the Conchords

8. Better Off Ted

9. South Park

10. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Honorable Mentions:

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Office, Parks and Recreation, Community, Sons & Daughters (2006), The Neighbors (2012), Undeclared, Another Period, Drunk History, Brooklyn 99

I see some of you are mixing animation with live-action series.

I'll post 10 in each catergory.

I can't rank them right now, but I'm sure about the first in each, being my most favourite.

Also, I don't watch series these last years so all of them are old.

Live-action:

1. Beauty and the Beast (80s)

-Mission Impossible (80s)
-Beverly Hills 90210 (90s)
-Dynasty
-Friends

-Star Trek (TOS)

-Sex and the City
-Star Trek the Next Generation
-The X-Files

Can't think of one more.

Animation/anime:

1.Candy Candy (anime)
-Ulysses 31
-Hello Sandybell (anime)
-Ducktales
-Nils Holgersson (anime)
-Fraggle Rock
-The Smurfs
-Thundercats
-Muppet show
-Pink Panther Show

It is indeed difficult to mix sitcoms with dramas or other genres, for that matter. It's also incredibly hard for me to remember all the shows I've seen over the years that I've liked. Or know where the line goes. For example, there are several Astrid Lindgren movies from my childhood that were expanded into television shows that would score very highly -- both out of nostalgia and because they're damn good. But maybe they wouldn't count.

Ranking is difficult too. The only thing I know for sure is that TWIN PEAKS is the most important to me; it even inspired me to write a whole novel in the early 90s.

But other great drama shows that I would recommend in a minute include (but is not exclusive to) X-FILES, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, BABYLON 5, DR. WHO, FALLING SKIES, FIREFLY, FRINGE, GAME OF THRONES, LAST MAN ON EARTH, LES REVENANTS, LOST (up to a point), MISFITS, REAL HUMANS (the Swedish version; haven't seen the US/Fincher version yet), REVOLUTION, RIGET, STARGATE UNIVERSE (the only STARGATE show I've liked), SUPERNATURAL, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, THE 100, THE LEFTOVERS, THE WALKING DEAD, TORCHWOOD, WAREHOUSE 13, WAYWARD PINES.

As you can see, all of the above have a paranormal/sci fi slant.

I also like non-paranormal stuff like BREAKING BAD, BETTER CALL SAUL, HOMELAND, THE WIRE, OZ, JUSTIFIED, SHERLOCK, DEADWOOD, HOUSE OF CARDS, TRUE DETECTIVE, DA VINCI'S DEMONS, 24, BLACK SAILS.

Never cared for STAR TREK in any shape or form, nor several popular shows like SOPRANOS, MAD MEN.

And I haven't started going into the 90s and 80s past to dig up old favs.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to add some of my favourite comedy shows -- SEINFELD, KING OF QUEENS, SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, KLOVN, THE OFFICE, THE EXTRAS (basically anything by Gervais), FRASIER, CHEERS, MONTHY PYTHON, FAWLTY TOWERS and many more (several Norwegian shows that none of you have heard, for example, like ÅPEN POST, UTI VÅR HAGE, TEAM ANTONSEN).

What I meant earlier was that it doesn't make sense to me to rank miniseries like HHGTTG, Masada, Wild Palms, Band Of Brothers, It, The Stand, etc against continuous, ongoing series. They are a different thing.

It's more to do with their intent when making it then what happened to air. Sherlock was always intended to be a continuous series. If the ratings were low and it got canceled after one season, that doesn't turn it into a miniseries.

You get into really grey areas trying to separate things in that way, though. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy supposedly ended up being a single series show due to differences between Douglas Adams and one/some of the programme makers (so the story was only continued in the books). Game of Thrones was always intended to have multiple seasons but it's supposed to be an adaptation of (we're told) a single, continuous story, unlike (say) The Sopranos or The West Wing which were developed in a season-by-season format. Then there's the likes of True Detective (and possibly Fargo) which have different stories and settings from one season to the next. And, of course, lots of shows which have a different story for each episode; and soap operas which just continue indefinitely...

I wouldh't really divide anything like some of you guys do. If it's a serialized piece of television, then it fits a description for me.

Wha? Being serialized is a requirement for a tv show?

So The Simpsons is not a tv show?

By "serialized" I meant "divided into episodes".

Sorry, might be a cliche from another language.

I'm not a Trekkie (Trekker?) but I did enjoy the original series very much. Watched most of it just recently. Hey, it's even on my list.

1 - Twin Peaks

2 - Freaks & Geeks

3 - Party Down

And those are the only tv shows I have ever watched from beginning to end. I suspect Battlestar Galactica will join this list soon

I rarely catch them while they're still being produced, so binge watching is pretty much the only way to watch them. And they take such a long time to watch from beginning to end. No matter how good are, I often simply lose enthusiasm

In no particular order:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Angel

LOST

South Park

Battlestar Galactica

The Blacklist

Blackadder

Stargate SG-1

Bones

Stargate Atlantis

Farscape

Stargate Universe

Friends

Star Trek Voyager

Fawlty Towers

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Firefly

House MD

Malcolm in the Middle

Doctor Who

honourable mentions are The Wonder Years. Watched it as a young kid. Adored it. Haven't been able to see it anywhere in 15 years. Bates Motel I'm enjoying at the moment, and of course the obvious one; classic Simpsons early seasons.

If we're also talking non-fiction like documentaries, then definitely Crocodile Hunter. Steve Irwin was and still is a hero of mine.

Probably forgetting some.

Can't believe I forgot Better Call Saul. Simply the best TV series of 2015. Hard to rank something with one season so far against all these others, though. If subsequent seasons are of the same quality, it will end of on my top 10 for sure.
