  1. 1. What's your favorite John Williams score of the of 2010 - 2014

    • The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
    • War Horse
    • Lincoln
    • The Book Thief

Difficult, this one.

War Horse is easily the best album and one of the better put together CD's by Williams in a long while. Its use in the film largely depends on what kind of film are we expecting to see. Tin Tin, one the other hand, works better in film. I never found my way into Lincoln, to be honest. Not yet, anyway. And The Book Thief is the kind of music that benefits from listening at particular time of the year.

I'm going to go with War Horse. There is something vintage about it. And the emotional element cannot be underestimated.

Voted for War Horse. I'm certain Episode VII will be my favourite score from this decade though. It's a Star Wars score. Of course it will.

I love all the 4 scores, I really do. And they all have wonderful themes. For purely sentimental reasons, my votes goes to Tintin. Those first two tracks are just killer tracks

Tintin. With War Horse close behind - when it came out, I strongly admired it, but somehow I've rarely put it on since then, while Tintin still regularly finds its way into my playlist. Both are among his best of this millennium.

Lincoln, which originally disappointed me, is quite wonderful as well. But I never found my way into Book Thief.

I could never get into Tiintin, it felt too much like leftovers from KOTCS. and I am getting really tired with Celesta = Mystery.

Indeed. WAR HORSE all the way. When he taps into the pastoral/religious/spiritual/whatever-you-want-to-call-it sound, it's goosebumps all over.

Was a tie between TIN-TIN and LINCOLN, but I decided to go for the underdog. I find THE BOOK THIEF a bit bland and treads territory too close to ANGELA'S ASHES (which never did much for me either).

WAR HORSE I'm not a fan of. It's Vaughn Williams without the edge. The countryside without the foxes tearing the heads off hens, maggots swarming inside rabbits and sheep dying of bloat. Just a picturesque postcard. Insulting.

They all have merit.

1. Tintin is one the most fun scores in recent years, with fantastic thematic integration and dazzling orchestrations. The main theme isn't prominent enough though, with the sub-themes leaving more of an impression. 5/5

2. War Horse has fantastic themes and orchestral color but like Tintin, it seems a bit unfocused though. 4.5/5

3. The Book Thief is not as entertaining or colorful as the other scores but it has the advantage of having a clear main theme. 4/5

4. Lincoln is more entertaining on than The Book Thief on album but is underwhelming in the film (mostly due to the sparse spotting and overly quiet role in the audio mix).

As heard on album- 4/5 As heard in film 3/5

I voted Tintin on Jason's poll and I still give it the edge here for its color, exuberance, and re-playability. After that it's hard to decide, I enjoy The Book Thief's delicacy, Lincoln's elegance, and War Horse's shamelessness in roughly equal measure.

Excited as always for the Cold War thriller, Star Wars VII, The BFG and beyond! :)

Lincoln is one of the best scores, and best scored films, in recent and not-so-recent memory.

That's an interesting statement. I've not seen it, but there seems to be hardly any music in it?

It's a tough choice between Lincoln and War Horse. The former is sparse but so meticulously crafted, where every note resonates with me. The latter, while it can be argued as a pastiche, it's just so bright and full of colour that you don't hear often in film scoring. All those flute solos get me every time. Yes, the film is overscored, but the music is damn fine.

I find THE BOOK THIEF a bit bland and treads territory too close to ANGELA'S ASHES (which never did much for me either).

Agreed, up until that last part...

Abrams will reject John's ep.7 scor and we'll end up with a MG score that will suck even more than clones.

I love all 4 scores btw.

Tintin is more conventional for me to get into. War Hose follows close after. The Book Thief needs a more complete release for me to love it more and Lincoln had moments, but I felt it was difficult to stay poised for too long without wanting more adventure. That's why it works better in its context.

City Point from Lincoln is a favourite though.

For me it was a toss up between War Horse and Lincoln. So I picked War Horse.

The Book Thief is the most boring score I've ever heard from Old Willy.

Oh that's a bit harsh. I absolutely love this Herrmann-esque woodwind moment 2:25 into this track. Alone worth the price of this CD:

That and the suite at the end.

Yeah the suite's alright but I grew frustrated with the score because it meandered for too long. People accused Williams of "noodling" his music in War Horse, but as a whole, I find it a far more pleasant listen.

Tintin for me. It's the one I come back to the most often. War Horse was not that far behind.

Lincoln I'm warming up to, as I like it more and more.

The Book Thief I need to give more attention to-I don't think its bad, it just hasn't left much of an impression on me...yet.

War Horse

I dunno about Tintin, I should like it a lot but something is lacking. Maybe if I could hear the complete score with alternates it would change my opinion

Trouble is I've only heard Lincoln. Time to do some rummaging methinks.

This is very unworthy or a JWfan.-10 points
