Williams gave all his big themes multiple uses. There were obviously themes in those movies, but they were almost more like motifs than strongly defined themes. Williams hasn't really written an old-style, theme-driven score since HARRY POTTER 3. Since then, he's been more concerned with exploring rhytmical patterns and chord variations. The themes since then haven't really made an impact, at least not on me, even if the music has been beautiful in other ways.So I predict that the new STAR WARS score will be more of the same -- lots of rhytmical patterns, explorations of chords and harmonies and themes that aren't as well-defined as they used to -- including Finn's theme. Mind you, it's just speculation (and I'd be delighted to be proven wrong), but it's an educated guess based on his film scores in the last decade. It has the draw of a younger audience whilst being recognizable to older moviegoers. Is that a bad thing? I'm sure people will come to revere Williams older themes as the masterful pieces they truly are... On topic though, this just makes me more excited to hear what new themes JW has cooked up. Maybe the final scoring session was all the concert suites? Considering most film music sounds like a canvas of random notes to most non-diehard-fans, the specific reference to "themes" is really exciting here. None of the prequel actors came out using such terminology to describe JW's music for their characters!Let's face it, if you're JJ Abrams, you're walking into your spotting sessions with John Williams with the sole intention of getting every single main character their own theme or motif. He's as much a fanboy of JW as us!I'd expect major strings/brass/piano themes for Finn and Rey, a march for the First Order, a motif for Phasma and BB8, and some kind of dark choral identity for Ren and his Knights.Intertwine that with all the returning themes and it's one hell of a score.
