So is this a prequel from before Coulson died, or do they resurrect / clone him somehow and it's set in modern day?

It takes place after The Avengers, so yes -- Coulson lives.

I wonder if Alan Silvestri will score the pilot and provide the main theme for the show.

A real composer for a TV series? In this time and day? I'd be WELL surprised!

I doubt anyone interesting will end up scoring this, based on Marvel's recent composer selections for Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Captain America 2.

Having Coulson alive is dumb. The whole reason the team is called "The Avengers" is because they were avenging his death!

And how are they going to explain him working with SHIELD but Captain America, Iron Man, and the others NEVER showing up on the show?

I like the idea of a TV show set in the same world as the Marvel Cinematic Universe but this one seems odd.

I thought it was called The Avengers before his death? (the avengers initiative etc.)

Tsk Tsk Tsk, posting a uninformed opinion, I expected better from you Pieter ;)

Posting an INFORMED opinion is a sure-fire way of getting one's posts ignored.

Here at JWFan, controversy rules! Does it not?

It's about Shield dude! Not about The Avengers!

It's a new Joss Whedon series. Good enough reason to be awesome.

No Whedon show since Angel has captured the imagination of a large enough audience. And even Angel was just a spin-off.

I heard that two Avengers actors will guest star in the pilot -- and pictures were taken of them on set. But ABC quickly yanked those as soon as they hit the 'Net. Rumor has it that it was Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, but we won't know for sure.

Considering Joss co-wrote and directed the pilot, I'm sure he'll have a good explanation for Coulson living.

Honestly, the way they played it in the film I saw them keeping him alive. Yes, it seemed like we saw him die, but he simply could have passed out due to the pain. Then Fury comes in and tells them that he dies and informs Hill it was because "they needed a push". Always reeked to me as a fake-out and that they might have even planned on Caulson popping up at the end and making The Avengers do a double take.

I agree, I was very surprised Coulson didn't show up alive in a later scene. Fury lied about everything else, I just sort of assumed he was lying about Coulson's death too.

Don't forget that Bucky Barnes survived his death by train (or was resurrected) to return as the Winter Soldier. Coulson surviving is child's play.

There were headlines a few days ago indicating that the how of Coulson's aliveness is now known, but I avoided reading anything about it. I'd rather find out when I see the pilot.

Which, needless to say, I'm super stoked about.

Here we go: 3 minute trailer

Kinda looks like Fringe, honestly.

Are these characters from the comic books or made up for the show?

Made up I believe they said. Though I'd expect low level characters that have no chance to appear in their own movie to pop up eventually, especially if they can realize them with a large amount of CGI. And of course, come November there will be an episode relating to Thor no doubt when the next film is set to drop.

Has there been any word about composer? I am actually hoping it will go to McCreary but I think its unlikely with him already doing Defiance & Da Vinci's Demons (assuming he is back for season 2 of both shows)

So who's watching the premiere tonight?

BTW, here's a little featurette with Bear McCreary talking about scoring the show, featuring a bunch of the score!

I thought there were too many unanswered questions raised in the Pilot, which results in it not being able to stand alone very well..

also I didn't really feel any camaraderie (or anything really) in the "team" like I have in other similar shows, they seemed rather bland and generic as well.

I enjoyed it. I also would've enjoyed an extended pilot, but for the beginning, it was pretty entertaining. I liked that the plot took turns I wasn't always expecting, and overall I kind of got a sort of Batman: The Animated Series vibe at times from the treatment of the first case we see here.

Coulson stole the show, especially in his final confrontation with Michael, and that scene had me looking forward to where this show will go. Coulson's earnestness and idealism is such a refreshing quality that served the pilot well, and will hopefully continue to do so. He seems to be a guy that recognizes that S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't squeaky clean, but it's his best shot to do good in this arena. It will be interesting to see if/how his convictions grate against the darker side of the organization; I can't imagine there won't be some revelation to him what happened that isn't Tahiti, and judging by the exchange between Sherbatzky and Shepherd Book, that could start some serious shit.

All that said, I'm hoping we get to know the rest of the team more. This should definitely be an ensemble series, albeit one with a serious M.V.P. in Coulson. They did show promise, though (again, an extended pilot might have afforded us a little more bonding time), and I look forward to seeing how that all plays out.

Nothing majorly stuck out in the score, other than the fact that it was clearly reaching to go beyond the standard wallpaper. Here's hoping McCreary gets a chance to flex his muscles in future episodes.

I'll be watching for sure.

I didn't see the pilot, but I thought "8-6-4" was boring. It's great to have Clark Gregg take center stage as Coulson, as well as Ming-Na's kick-ass Agent Melinda May... but I don't know about the other new cast members. The two hackers were annoying. It had some good action, and Bear McCreary's score was exciting. (The SLJ cameo at the end was a definite plus.) It's just... I don't feel that fun sense of world-building Joss established with Buffy, Angel, and Firefly -- it's just not engaging me like those three did.

And it's not that the show needed all of the Avengers cast, but a SHIELD-centered show needs more than one cast member from the film. Having Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, and/or Samuel L. Jackson as regular/reoccurring roles alongside Gregg in the show would definitely add more credibility (and interest) to Agents of SHIELD. It feels like Whedon and his showrunners' hands were tied when they were coming up with the show, in terms of which characters they could bring in and the budget for each episode. And it shows.

I think, barring the viewing numbers stabilizing, this is going to be a one-and-done season.
