This should arrive today for me as well, although Amazon's release day delivery is sometimes a day late for me. This happened e.g. with Lincoln. But I'm very excited for this, and the rest of the series. Between this and EotS, today's a big day!

You're in for a real treat! Especially with the last track on disc 1: turns out that the "Ahhh"ing isn't Zimmer's original intentions.

"Ahhh"ing? What are you talking about?

Listen to "King Of Pride Rock" on the album, when Simba's theme kicks in as he ascends Pride Rock. Then listen to that exact moment on this new set and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, I have heard a choir before, I just did not know what he was referring to.

...Please tell me it is not some sort of glitch or something...

Is it more chorus?

Sounds more like the Legacy version is what Zimmer wrote, and the OST/album version is some kind of layering job

The set is Zimmer's original intentions.

The Legacy Edition version doesn't add choir to parts that previously didn't have it, but it replaces the choir in "The Rightful King" so that the choir actually sings when Simba rises to Pride Rock, rather than just making an "Ahh" sound. Another dramatic change is Zimmer's original intention for Stampede - the film and sessions actually combine elements of the original recording with the demo.

Hearing the original intended version is interesting and actually is better, especially for "King Of Pride Rock" part with the choir. If people prefer the film version then they can stick to the sessions.

My thoughts precisely. The old version was clearly more synth-based. One reveiwer once said the bass sounded like toys and with this set, all the instruments actually sound real, and it definitely makes it a stronger score for that.

Do the liner notes mention or explain any of these differences?

Search me, I've only listened to it. I said my physical copy won't be arriving for a week.

OK, for a second I was worried they had removed the choir! I would've flown into a full-blown Bavarian furor had that been the case. And I would've blamed LeBlanc.

No, it's been replaced. Apparently, we've been listening to a synth choir all this time.

! I just listened to the OST and the rec sessions and couldn't discern much difference. Well, looking forward to this "new" (old?) version. And keeping the OST for sentimental reasons, as it was my first ever CD back in 1994!

You won't be able to tell the difference: the new choir is exclusive to the new set: the sessions leak and the album uses the old 'film' mixes.

Meaning the choir from the demo?

Some of the demo choir is very similar, yes.

Is the firm version on the original album?

To an extent. The sixteen (or twenty, if you have the non-English OST) minutes of music comes from the same source that last year's session leak came from.

I meant is the film version of that material you were talking about on the original album? The choir stuff.

I've got the international version.

Aside from a few mixing differences, yes.

Haha.

There is one subtle thing about this release that makes me unbelievably happy. At 9:34 in The Rightful King, that suspension is so much more prominent than in the original album/film version. I love that part and would listen to it over and over and hum along to bring that line out more. That gave me some major chills when I heard it.

Was the Elton John version of Be Prepared ever released? Or even recorded? I mean his original versions are complete shit compared to what Hans and Mark achieved with that material, but I've always wondered what it might have sounded like.

Anybody?

Do the liner notes mention or explain any of these differences?

No - there is a two-page write-up from a producer giving a little history of the songs and score, generally. Then there are the lyrics and credits. Then there is a half page of track notes (from Hansy Boy himself, apparently), and it's ONLY for the demo tracks on disc 2. Not a lot of information either - basically just Hans saying "This track was the score for the scene where x happened" for each track. It closes out with a handful of pages of artwork, from early sketches to finished designs.

So the liner notes are not exactly a score fan's biggest dream. They're more catered towards the Disney collector, as opposed to the score collector. Definitely nothing as detailed as you'd see from LLL, Intrada, etc.

The booklet serves its purpose for me, and I found the producer's write-up to be sufficient information about the score. To me, what really matters is the music, and I'm very excited. I avoid sessions and boots, so this is my first taste of the music outside of the OST and the few times I've seen the movie. In that regard, I'd say Disney did a really great job!

No. I don't know if it ever got a proper recording.

Well, I got my copy yesterday too and although the liners didn't go in depth about the scoring process, the booklet was still really wonderful. I love all the little illustrations, and the design of the whole set is really well done. The producer's note was pretty revealing, too. I never knew quite how involved Zimmer was with the songs.

Disc 1 was really a joy to listen to. I'm amazed to have a presentation of the score from Disney that I won't need to edit or augment in any way. The new Stampede and the ending sound great... I think there might be more music in Hakuna Matata? And we even got Hawaiian War Chant... amazing! And regardless of the new/alternate material, it's just cool to have an official release of such great material that gets it right.

I may not even rip Disc 2 to my computer, though. I listened to Morning Report and Warthog Rhapsody, and it's interesting to hear these other ideas once, but they don't compare to the songs that made it into the film. The demos were also very cool to hear, but they sounded pretty bad, as if a good source for the recordings couldn't be found. And I skipped the Elton John songs completely - thank you, Disney, for relegating these to the end of Disc 2! But I'm not going to complain about the extra material, since they totally nailed Disc 1 as well as the packaging.

I'm glad they included the Elton John songs at all because I enjoy them, and since the OST got lost in my family, I no longer had his IJCWTBK song. And I didn't want to rebuy the OST just for that.

Morning Report was written for the special edition, so, it kind of did make it into the film...

We watched this movie on DVD the other month for the first time in maybe ten years, and it branched in the Morning Report scene. I'm typically fine with scenes being added to movies, but sometimes scenes are deleted for a reason. We were pretty displeased with the song, and the scene didn't really add anything to the movie. I'm glad they kept it out of the main album program on disc 1.

I don't like The Morning Report. I realize that it was popular with the stage version of the show, which pulled it off the cutting room floor and back into the movie, but I'm rather glad it wasn't in the stage version when I saw it last fall. It slows down the very beginning of the story.

I wasn't a fan of all the songs added to Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Lion King, etc. in the special editions. Regardless of the quality or origin of the songs, I'd rather have the option of watching the film in its original form. Plus the animation in the new scenes didn't match the original animation at all.

I'm glad they included Morning Report on this set for the sake of completeness, though, and they did the right thing saving it for disc 2 as a bonus track.

Brilliant ! I've ordered TLK (one of Zimmer's absolute best) on Amazon and it should be here in a couple of weeks time.

The score is worthy of a complete release and I am happy for the fans that it has finally happened after 20 years.

But the fact that the expanded Backdraft is still in limbo, with that leak from a while ago, surprises me.
