LotR/Hobbit Extended Editions vs Star Wars Special Editions

Yes, that's a fitting description. Strangely prominent. But it's really a way I think to make a few points about Bard. I prefer it to having the Master instead of Alfrid.

And Jackson mentioned Alfrid's death in the DoS commentary, so there is another EE scene.

I remember PJ talking about how you always need at least three characters for a plot (explaining why Tauriel was added). You can see an example of this in the lake side scene. You've got Bard and Alfrid, so it seems they added the Laketown lady to the scene to give dialogue for three people.

Fortunately PJ was able to film several great two character scenes in his LOTR days, before he came to this new epiphany for The Hobbit. Aragorn and Gandalf in TTT. Gandalf and Pippin at Minas Tirith. Aragorn and Merry at Rohan.

The Gandalf and Bilbo scenes in the opening of FOTR, the Gandalf and Frodo scene when the ring was cast in the fireplace, The Gandalf and Frodo scene at the Moria, the Gandalf and Theoden scene at Theodred's tomb, etc etc

Ok, but Bilbo with Gollum was filmed pretty true to the book. PJ may have embellished the sequence to make it longer, but he didn't have to invent the scene completely out of the appendices and notes. Therein lies the difference. If he had shoehorned a third character into the cave, how would it have worked? Who would it have been? And who would have murdered the third person? Because only two people directly watched the exchange, Bilbo and Gollum.

How many scenes have been created completely for The Hobbit movies that weren't explicitly in the book? Those could have had the three characters.

So you're saying there can be arcs with 2 characters, but PJ is not capable of writing them?

Bilbo and Gollum.

There's a difference between a plot arc and individual scenes. Gollum and does not really have an arc with anyone through these three films.

It's an entire chapter in the book. It could mostly qualify as a short story and stand on its own. That makes it much more like an arc than just an individual scene.

Neither Tauriel nor Alfrid are there over the entire three films. Also, Alfrid is still there (and worse than ever) when the mayor's arc is done.

And ultimately, I'll claim that these story arcs don't work at all in their three character setting anyway. They wouldn't work better or worse without the extra characters; they have much bigger problems.

Neither Tauriel....are there over the entire three films

or the Woodland Realm characters developments over two.

Reading Tal-Elmar, the Master in the films seems more like Mogru the Master of Agar than the Master of the Hobbit sometimes.
