  1. 1. Which is these 3 Oscarwinning Spielberg/Williams scores is best?

    • Jaws
    • E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
    • Schindlers List

While JAWS is one of my lonely island movies (E. T. is certainly not) i had to chose E. T. for it is just a better overall composition due to its operatic nature.

Jaws, Star Wars , E.T. are 100% deserving of the Oscars and the only rightful winners

I think SL won more because it was caught up in the movie's sweep. It's one of the few times I say that for JW. A lot of JW scores deserve that # 5 Oscar spot more (JP,TESB, Raiders,Superman, HPSS)

Oh I don't know, KM. It's one of those works that gets more respect from that other crowd. You know, people who puke when they think of Williams' 80's magic. Which is only fair, Schindler's List has nothing in common with any of those. And it's a great thing! Imagine: John Williams can do more than one thing!

I for one never got anything from E.T, sadly. The film is boring and I hated it as a kid. So there's my emotional link to it then. It's one classic JW score I never connected with and that was even before I was aware of its status.

Having said that, the original 1982 album is rather good. Much better than 1996/2002 ones.

Rubbish. SL was very deserving of the Oscar. Williams tapped into something so very raw and emotional whose potential wasn't fully realized till this film came along.

ET>Jaws>Schindler's List.

Define great!

Great: Minority Report

Lol, no.

when someone goes of on an idiotic tangent like this is does a disservice to John's great works.

KM is correct. Sl won by the love not by being the best. JP is superior.

I think casually laughing off someone's appreciation of one of his scores does a greater disservice to his work as a whole.

Oh I'm sure that's the reason why it won. But that doesn't mean it's not deserving of the award.

You're right! God forbid Johnny ever reads this post. I'm sure he'd be terribly offended by my horrid complimenting of one of his scores, or even daring to consider that he actually wrote a fine work for the film. Shame on me! I shall have to do penance for this.

JWFan probably needs to be retitled to 80sJWFan. Most of the people here hate half of his work anyway.

Jaws is good, but probably among my least favorite Williams/Spielberg scores as a listening experience. Maybe if I'd have grown up with the OST, as opposed to the complete expanded version, my feelings would be stronger for it...

E.T. is maybe my favorite Williams score and maybe my favorite Spielberg movie, so it wins by any metric.

I'm surprised this hasn't been moved to the correct appropriate forum.

OCD wins.

Howard Goodall on tonight's Classic FM at the Movies said he thinks Schindler's List is Williams' greatest film score. And he loves Superman and Star Wars, he always plays Williams stuff every Saturday. But it goes to show how the classical luvvie perspective has quite different tastes and desires to us lot.

So whenever I see KM casually downplaying the influence and power of the Schindler's score I find it really easy and natural to dismiss his view on the matter. Easy as 123.

oh I know SL is the only JW score accepted by classical elitists

Nonsense, it's A.I.

Because that's his only good score.

But really, as far as I know, SL's popularity with the classical elite is... just that, a show of elitism. Genuine folks in the classical world appreciate Williams on every level, trust me.
