The Music In The Spot

  1. 1. Is the music from 0:03-0:38 in this TV spot written by John Williams?

    • Definitely John Williams - probably written a while back for potential trailer use
    • Definitely John WIlliams - It's gotta be from the Force Awakens score!
    • Definitely John WIlliams, but redone / remixed to sound more "trailery"
    • Definitely not John Williams!

The new tv spot from the preview. There is a musical theme in it I have not heard previously. I have no clue anymore as to the composer.

Admin note: The poll was added by me, not by Tom!

All the PT promotional material used actual Williams music. The lack of Williams in the Force Awakens trailers/commercials ever since the teaser and these RCP power anthem versions of the themes instead is pretty fucking disturbing, but the fanboys are eating it up.

Honestly I am glad that we haven't heard any of his music yet (assuming we haven't) I am have my fingers crossed that this will be the best thing he's written in years and I'd love to be surprised by it in the cinema.

I'm kind of worried that when the soundtrack finally hits people are gonna be all "Honestly I liked the trailer music better :3"

That will happen. Also expect "why didn't they get Giachino to do it???!!!" type comments.

Everyone remember when that bit of sheet music from The Book Thief was shown and it was quite literally the worst moment of the score (and possibly even his post-75 career)? If it is Williams, then maybe it's that type of situation.

(It was that Snow Fight insert just in case nobody remembered)

who know, all I know is that I feel depressed for some reason

Is it because you're afraid it might be Williams and it doesn't sound up to par? That's how I feel. I don't think it's Williams but I honestly don't know for sure. It's harder for me to detect the synth sound than others here. If it is synth it is very good synth.

why would they still be paying someone to compose music for a TV spot when they have the recording sessions now

I think JJ may be so excited to work with John Williams on a Star Wars film that he is purposefully holding the new music back until the film releases. At least I HOPE SO!

I dunno, you'd think he'd want to use the actual score to promote the film to the max

I remember that little bit of the Jurassic Park theme in TV commercials got me 10X more excited to see the film

The only reason I think it could possibly be John is becasue there is a definite theme. A theme I've never heard before. There are, however, many more reasons that make me think it's someone else.

My depression comes from both not hearing the score in TV spots and to find out they were still recording it a few days ago for some reason (is it being re-scored?)

Actually, for the first time, I'm really feeling this as Williams. To me it sounds like it could be tracked music from a concert arrangement. The contour of the melody and harmony is more Williams-y to my ears than generic trailer music.

No more TV spots or articles for me until the movie comes out

Yeah same here. Already feel too informed.

Ditto. I love what I've seen so far, but one of my greatest fears, apart from getting hit with spoilers from outside sources, is that I'll wind up spoiling it for myself by putting too many of the pieces together. And anyway, I don't need any more trailers to tell me this is going to be great. I just want to get to the damn greatness already. . . !

well, all that Battlefront music sound like Williams too

Yeah, that had me more convinced. I was still skeptical but almost ready to believe it.

When it's really him, we'll all know it. Even if it's disappointing, it'll be undeniable.

Half a bar in and it ain't Williams. Sounds like another decent impression of a passing underscore tune.

I'll go with this. You've never led me astray before.

Give it time.

lol everyone has an experation date

Even the Jurassic World trailers switched to Gia's recording of the theme once the sessions were done. They must have at least 3 hours of material from JW for TFA now. I can't believe they won't use some of it.

Anakin's Betrayal premiered in a TV spot and I remember being blown away hearing that for the first time.

yeah, there something oddly amiss

Perhaps JJ simply does not want the music to be heard before the movie comes out. It's understandable

it make as much sense as using fake footage from the film

Well, I guess there's always that Disney Channel thingy tomorrow. Back to waiting.

Now does seem like the right time to start using Williams to hype the movie. It's been a little disheartening, musically....I guess it's paranoid but it feels like they don't think Williams' music is badass or sexy enough on its own. Gotta add the drums and brooding efffects. Of course they're not gonna make the actual score sound like that, but it's kinda like, so the real shit can't sell a Star Wars movie to the masses? Star Wars music isn't cool enough for Star Wars anymore? Doesn't capture the right atmosphere? Or what? I don't get it.

We are talking about trailers here, things that usually do not have original music from the film although there are some exceptions like the teaser. I am not in the least surprised if they are saving Williams' music for the film itself.
