The Bear McCreary Thread

I am sure it is just because he declines all offers of big budget movies brought to him to keep himself humble. That is what I would do. Keep it real.

Da Vinci's Demons was just canceled.

I know. It's ending after Season 3, which hasn't aired yet, so he still has those episodes to score.

Even in the 50s-80s, I doubt there was any composer scoring 7 simultaneously running tv shows. Crazy.

True. He obviously enjoys the challenge.

Why does he only really do TV shows?

He has done a movie. James Rolfe's 'Angry Video Game Nerd'. A passion project.

And still no inkling of any sort of release of The Walking Dead.

I've never heard anything interesting or a moment that stood out. That release would be one of the most boring ever.

Does he really write all of these? Or does he employ a bunch of ghost composers, like LoDuca did during his Hercules/Xena days?

7 shows simply doesn't seem possible

Aren't the Marvel shows like 10 episodes each or are they full seasons?

You guys are joking, right? He's done plenty of movies

Rest Stop
Wrong Turn 2: Dead End
Rest Stop: Don't Look Back
Step Up 3D
Europa Report
Knights of Badassdom
Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie

He's not scoring all the Marvel shows; only Agents of SHIELD. SHIELD has had 2 seasons of 22 episodes each and he's scored them all.

Agent Carter was 1 season of 8 episodes and that was scored by Christopher Lennertz (and it's the best TV scoring of 2015!)

Daredevil was 1 season of 13 episodes and that was scored by John Paesano

His Europa Report Score shows his Genius in the movie format. He can do absolutely anything with 100% authenticity. He has the superhero sound down, the sci-fi sound, the classical and operatic sound, and his varied exploration of different instruments and new and unheard of techniques, even rock and heavy metal is a walk in the park for him. Plus having his wife and brother as soloists on his scores makes him write genuine and personal stuff.

I'd love to grab and shake the major studios and scream a friendly "WHY AREN'T YOU THROWING ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD AT THIS GUY TO GET HIM ON YOUR FILM?"

Some here might be right that he has no interest in exploding into the 'big' studio films, but someone needs to make Bear realise how successful he could be if he accepts a big film job. He should have learnt that in his many years with Bernstein.

Still.

7 TV shows.

That doesn't seem plausible.

I'm calling RCP composer factory on this one. You cant do 22 episodes of a show AND a bunch of other stuff.

I've spoken to the head of his representation personally and got a pretty good amount of info about his scoring process and inner workings of his operation. He writes everything himself. He runs two orchestras and studios and writes non-stop.

You have to remember that there's only a few minutes per episode of noticeable and important music in any show, big or small. Most of the score is underscore for tension and general noise. That is auto-pilot stuff for someone as experienced as Bear is in TV. He also doesn't score them all at once because of different air-dates. Desplat has no team of writers and he can do 6 films a year. Some with wall-to-wall music.

Sorry, I don't but it

Buy it's true!

He uses other Bears. They're great at percussion, what with their bear claws and all. Why do you think Battlestar Galactica was so heavy on the drums? Trained bears.

Not only that, but he seems to put quite a bit of thought into these scores and blogs about it all.

...and then he does awesome cover versions of his own music:

He surely must be John Irving's favourite composer.

I just hope Bear will get more film assignments. I like his TV scoring which features a lot of unusual sounds and instruments but I would like to hear him working with a full symphony orchestra for a big project.

I just finished interviewing Bear a few minutes ago, and I'm going to be writing an article about his work on BSG, Outlander, Walking Dead, Agents of Shield, Da Vinci's Demons etc. Also I do a podcast for Bombad Radio called 'Musical Procrastination,' where I analyse Scores etc monthly, and this month is BSG and I should also be playing the audio from the interview there.

Based on the titles, there is material from both seasons on here, but it looks like it may lean a lot more toward Season 1. Also, I can't seem to find the album using the actual Spotify app. I wonder why they're willing to stream this through their website, but seemingly not their apps.

Outlander Volume 2 is now on Spotify

Will give this a listen later. These are good times for McCreary fans and going by the amazon sales ranks, good times for McCreary himself. Vol. 2 has picked up where Vol. 1 left off and is currently #3 soundtrack, #44 overall in cds.
