  1. A list that has Titanic and Gladiator can not possibly be taken seriously. LOL
  2. Horner is not so bad although all his scores are NOT original. All film composers steal from others and from themselves but he simply overdoes it. There are about 5 or 6 good scores but that doesn't make him a great film composer. I hate when people say its their favourite after Williams, Goldsmith and Zimmer (HA, HA). I can think of at least 20 film composers that are far superior than Horner. Alfred Newman, Waxman, Korngold, Friedhofer, Steiner, Morricone, John Scott, Henry Mancini, John Barry, Michel Legrand, MAurice Jarre, MArio Nascimbene, Rozsa, Morross, Malcolm Arnold, . Even Poledouris, Doyle, Goldenthal,Shaiman, Robbins. And nto forget GOldsmith and WILLIAMS
  3. Who cares about the awards. As long as the films and the scores are good. I don't care.
  4. I think of film scores as classical music. Like music for operas, ballet or theater. I don't want to vote one against the other because I think it is not fair. Besides i have almost anything that John Williams has ever written like Images, Checkmate or Monsignor and I also own everything that was written by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Williams is not and never will be as good as those two but I think he is a lot better than many famous classical composers. Of course most film composers aren't so good. Herrmann, Rozsa, Alfred Newman, Tiomkin, Goldsmith, Waxman, Korngold, Friedhofer, Morricone, Williams, Jarre, Rota certainly are very talented and I am sure that could all be very succesful in the concert world. Some of them are allready, including the Maestro. The rest are not worthwile to be mentioned. I personally think that only Doyle and Goldenthal can surprise us in the future with some exceptional writing for film and concert as well.
  5. These are the sadest news I've heard for a long time. Let's hope that the special special special edition DVD's will have all versions
  6. Well if he wasnot such an exceptional composer i propably would never be interested in film scores!!!!

  8. I am very curious about who is going to score the third Harry Poter film. If Alfonso Cuaron is going to direct it, his obvious choice would be Patrick Doyle. They have worked in many films and Doyle's work in The Little Princess is excellent. Has Williams signed for Prisoner of Azhkaban or we will all be a little suprised. By the way i think that Patrick Doyle is one of the best five composers working on cinema nowadays. I own anything that is outhere of his.

  11. very interesting question. as a matter of fact when John Williams began working in the movies as an orchestrator he had a reputation as being the best orchestrator working in Hollywood since Hugo Friedhofer who thought very highly of him. Bernard Herrmann also thought Williams had great talent. Williams was also praised by Henry Mancini, jerry Goldsmith, Patrick Doyle, Michael Kamen, Danny elfman, Andre Previn, Seiji Ozawa. Actually most film composers today think of him as the last true master. He really IS.
  12. HELLO EVERYBODY. I AM A NEW MEMBER OF AN ELITE GROUP!!! ON THE TOPIC NOW. I WAS ALWAYS VERY DISAPPOINTED ON THE OPINION THAT MOST PEOPLE HAD ABOUT MOVIE MUSIC. CERTAINLY I DON'T BLAME THEM. I ALSO BELEIVE THAT THERE ARE VERY FEW IMPORTANT AND GREAT COMPOSERS WORKING ON CINEMA TODAY. JOHN WILLIAMS IS CERTAINLY THE BEST. AND PROBABLY THE BEST EVER. IS HE A REALLY GOOD 'CLASSICAL'? OF COURSE. I THINK THAT HE IS A LOT BETTER THAN MANY 'CLASSICAL' COMPOSERS IN GENERAL. THE PROBLEM WITH FILM COMPOSERS IS SUCCESS AND MONEY. THAT CERTAINLY IS A REASON TO BE ENVYED. IN GREECE MOST MAGAZINES WRITE BAD OR EVEN FALSE THINGS ABOUT SPIELBERG AND LUCAS. I HAVE EVEN READ A REVIEW FOR THE AOTC SCORE THAT GOT ME FURIOUS. THE GAY GAVE IT 3/10. IMAGINE NOW HOW DOES A CLASSICAL COMPOSER FEELS ABOUT SOMEONE LIKE JOHN WILLIAMS. NOW ABOUT THE FANS. SOMETIMES I FEEL THAT PEOPLE LISTEN TO CLASSICAL MUSIC JUST TO SAY THAT THEY LISTEN TO IT. THEY DON'T STUDY IT, THEY PROBABLY DON'T ENJOY IT. HOW CAN THEY SAY THAT FILM MUSIC IS SO BAD WHEN EXCEPTIONAL COMPOSERS HAVE WORKED FOR THAT MEDIUM. OK GOLDSMITH AND WILLIAMS HAVE BEGAN WORKING ON FILMS BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY ARE NOT CAPABLE OF WRITING FOR THE CONCERT HALL. WILLIAMS HAS PROVED THAT. I THINK THAT IN THE FUTURE AND CERTAINLY AFTER HIS DEATH HIS WORKS WILL BE NUMBERED LIKE ALL CLASSICAL COMPOSERS. I ALSO FEEL THAT AFTER BERNSTEIN'S DEATH HE IS WITHOUT ANY DOUBT USA'S NATIONAL COMPOSER. AND A GREAT ONE ISN'T HE? HIS WORKS (CLASSICAL OR FILM) WILL BE PERFORMED 200 YEARS FROM NOW LIKE BEETHOVEN'S AND THAT'S A FACT. AND NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST FAMOUS LIKE SOME OF JAMES HORNER'S SCORES, BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE BRILLIANT PIECES OF MUSIC!!!!!
