The Official "The Walking Dead" TV Show Discussion Thread (Beware Spoilers)

This probably sounds like something a psychopath would say, but a Glenn death scene would make me come back to the series, if only for one episode.

It's a pity this season wound up being a step back to me. The previous couple had become progressively better and there had been the real sense that the show was really beginning to come into its own. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy The Walking Dead and shall continue on with it, but I just wish it wasn't so hit and miss quite a lot of the time.

Really other than the finale this was easily the best season ever with the very best episode in the shows history. Perhaps the two best episodes. Both highlighting Carol.

With the exception of the bunker (Carol/Maggie) episode and the finale, I've been pretty much over TWD.  I'm very ready for them to be out of Alexandria (hopefully)

Aye, t'was an intriguing place... at first.

Moreover, I couldn't look at the screen with a relaxed facial expression whenever Dana was on. She was hideous on the eyes. Her zombified version was pretty much unbearable, like being gouged.

She looked like Captain Janeway is she was spoiled meat.

If not is but I cannot edit a thing here.

Watching S6 .... Is there a new showrunner? I find this season to be very 'off'.  Just notice how much music there is. After the first two episodes it al becomes rather soapy. It feels like all the talent has left the show ..

The song quota has gotten increasingly more cheesy (and intrusive) IMO. I could do without that Dawson's Creek/How I Met Your Mother moral of the story soulful crap next season.

I know plenty enjoyed the latest season, but I thought it was all over the place (literally), and actually not very good.

It was from start to finish the best constructed season by far.

Really? I don't think any season is perfect, but I much more enjoyed the fifth and third over this one. The fourth one at the hospital was stronger too.

This season was very well constructed in how the story was framed, using half the season to progress just a few hours. I just didn't like the story they decided to tell.

Can't say I'm looking forward to the next season. This new character is as dramatically cliched as it gets, and the circumstances under which they were trapped was ridiculous. I'm just not liking the direction the show is going towards.

His Metal Gear Solid chief villain style monologue at the climax of the last season stretched my patience about as far as it will go. It was pretty damn awful.

I've only seen the actor in Watchmen and Grey's Anatomy, back when it didn't suck as bad, and both times he looked like he was having fun. Negan is a continuation of that.

Besides, he's the new guy on the block meant to shake up the group. That's got to be fun.

I don't understand -- people ask that we don't post spoilers here, yet the headline clearly states this is going to be filled with spoilers?

Anyways, I just saw the season 7 premiere -- and woah, that's pretty intense right there. I can't remember a similarly intense episode since the first couple of seasons, when all was new and fresh. Of course, the biggest discussion point will be the deaths, so I'm going to put that in spoiler tags:

Spoiler

Red's death was not that bad. I was never really able to connect with him as a character. But friggin' Glenn? I realize we live in a universe where everyone, even the core characters, can die at any moment; the randomness of it all, but this seemed sloppy from a writing standpoint. One, because Glenn just went trough his 'rite-de-passage' in the last season, where he came back from what seemed like certain death, and two, because he was set up as a potential leader in the very first season -- there was a mythological story arc set up there that they undemined with his death. But hey -- maybe the actor who plays him had to opt out of the show for other engagements or something.

Don't ask me why Blume titled the thread that way

You guys should discuss the new episodes as they air with no spoiler tags at all.  Spoiler tags should only be used if you're discussing the previews for upcoming episodes, or something that leaked or was published about future episodes, etc.  But if it aired, just discuss it.

If you're not caught up on the show and don't want to be spoiled, don't open the thread!

Last night's character deaths remain true to the source material. There's nothing random about that. At this point in the story, those folks are dead, which reverberates with the survivors for a long time. As for the drawn out misdirection of last season's death that wasn't, that was the sloppy writing that insulted fans' intelligence.

Then why was....

Spoiler

...Glenn set up as the 'future leader' in the first season?

Surely, there should have been a Conan-type arc there, a sort of mythological rise acquired after hardships and sacrifice over the years; last year's fake death being some sort of ultimate test.

No, this death felt more like a desperate attempt for shock value, even within the comic book universe.

What a dreary slog that was.  Completely manipulative and showing utter contempt for their audience's intelligence.  That episode is deserving of the crap reviews it's getting. Little more than torture porn.

Thor, I do not follow how Glenn was set up to be a future leader. He was only the errand boy after Rick joined up with the RV, though he became a valued lieutenant in the ranks, second only to Darryl. He became a leader of sorts at the prison and when bringing Tara to Terminus, and that runaway back to Alexandria.

And the first season was so very long ago. When Darabont left or was forced out, please realize that planned story arcs changed over time.

Kirkland published episode 100 in July 2012, so Glenn's death has long been foreshadowed. It had to be a major character to mean something. A Eugene or Aaron would not have been even close. The actor even realized it had to be him.

I can't remember the exact exchange, but there was some lengthy tete-a-tete between Glenn and Rick(?) or some older guy in the first season -- I believe just as they were trying to get out through the tunnel under the building where Merle was left for dead. There were also some similar segments in the farm sequences, if memory serves. He was always set up as the unlikely hero and underdog who would one day rise to become the leader of the group -- presumably after Rick's demise.

Apparently, Kirkman must have forgotten or chosen to ignore this when he killed off Glenn in the comic books in 2012. Or the TV writers had made more of his potential than Kirkman had envisioned. Either way, it's a gratuitous development and IMO rather sloppy and cheap.

If an incomplete story arc meant a character can't die it would undermine the whole idea of a universe where anyone can die at any moment. *That* would be sloppy and artificial writing.

And anyway, I always thought that the first one and a half (or so) seasons were nice but rather pointless. To me, the show only slowly came into its own when it started to break down the characters' sense of society and humanity. The idea that behaviour like that shown by most characters, against anything that could possibly considered a threat to them, could actually plausibly be the prevalent trait among humankind (or perhaps was in primeval times) is what makes the show linger in my mind. And torture porn sequences are a convincingly fitting aspect of that.

It's like a more primal, less political take on some of the core concepts of Battlestar Galactica.

Chuffed to see Glenn's demise at last! He ought to have been killed off long before, but his power of invincibility finally wore off and not before time.

Negan, and the general OTT handling of his scenes, is a totally ridiculous character addition at this stage though, my suspension of disbelief has been breached. The violence I was alright with, but the scenarios in which it played out; my brain and its capacity to be be entertained now simply rejects what it is expected to put up with. That whole thing in the caravan and the "bring me the hatchet" was just so fucking stupid, and probably an all time low for The Walking Dead.

But still watchable, in the crudest, most brain-dead sense. Which more than anything is a frustrating pity.

Glenn's death was just about the only satisfying part of that episode.

I kind of like Negan. But I imagine he's going to be exhausting to watch, very soon.

Right. It's the same formula, just with the stakes set higher.

I wonder what the end game is for the show.

Considering they're roughly at the issue #100 mark and roughtly 160 issues have already been published, there's still plenty of material to mine from that
