Sometimes, music makes a film; the right chord or the right melody can enhance the drama, the joy or the tension of a great cinematic moment. Pacific Symphony's 2014 American Composers Festival celebrates the music of Elliot Goldenthal, James Horner and Howard Shore. Each a prominent figure in film music, these extraordinary composers can also be celebrated in the concert hall!

Concert Preview at 7 p.m. with host Alan Chapman.

This sounds exciting. Obviously the Goldenthal piece, but also the performance of "For Sejii". This is a great, modern piece that has never had a commercial recording (only a shoddy-sounding bootleg recording). So here's hoping the concert will be recorded somehow.

[Edit: Oops. Seems like we posted this at the same time, Jason!]

The Pacific Symphony has updated their website to say the piece by Goldenthal is a premiere of Symphony in G # minor. Does anyone know if this is the same as the Othello Symphony that was recorded last year or might we have a Symphony No. 2 from Goldenthal?

No, I believe it was confirmed that this is NOT the Othello symphony. Can't remember where I read it. On FSM, I think.

This concert MUST get a recording. Seriously.

So is anyone standing ready with the 'record' button tonight? I don't know how, so I hope someone does.

Meanwhile, I have to find it out if I can listen to the live stream over here. Where could I find the livestream again?

It won't be live streamed but streamed online July 27. I'll go on Saturday.

Ah, I see. So long to wait!

But I'd love to hear your report. I'm so incredibly envious of you!

Looking forward to hearing this tonight. From what I heard Goldenthal's Symphony is pretty much in the style of Alien 3 and Final Fantasy. I heard the second of two movements is basically like Toccata and Dreamscapes from "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within". Should be an excellent concert!!

Karim, how did they handle the electronic bits in Horner's Flight? Did they have a keyboardist on a synth? I also think I heard electronics in the brief video posted a while back documenting Goldenthal recording his symphony. Is this the case?

I don't think there were any electronics used. Horner has 2 pianos and 2 harps to add to the colors. Goldenthal made use of extensive extended techniques such as quarter tones, playing brass without mouthpieces, or mouthpieces alone, etc. Late in the second movement a percussionist or two left the stage to surround the audience with violent percussion. I don't know if this was electronically enhanced but I don't think it was. The second movement was very loud and I hope it translates well in broadcasts/recordings. Got it. Horner must have removed them for concert performances. A shame; I thought it would be a nice opportunity for many to hear them being integrated into concert music.

I mocked up this cover quickly for those of you who managed to download the web broadcast. I really hope we'll get a proper commercial recording down the road.

I prefer live recordings to studio ones (if that's what you mean by "proper").

No, I meant proper in the sense that it's released commercially. I often prefer live recordings too. It's a case-by-case thing for me.

Is anyone in this forum near Prague and planning to attend the Film Music Prague concert from September 24 to 26?

https://www.facebook.com/FilmMusicPrague?fref=photo

Looks like it will be a great show and Goldenthal is in very nice form conducting Alien 3, Interview with the Vampire, and others. Maybe this will be recorded.

I won't,unfortunately, but I'm in Krakow now, and Goldenthal will be here too. This year, the two events crashed (if you want to get both events in full, anyway). Hopefully, next year they'll be apart in time.

Actually, there are three major European film music festivals crashing into each other this year (Krakow, Vienna and Prague).

True.

I spoke to Robert Piaskowski today (the festival boss), and he told me that Krakow will most likely move back to May again next year.
