Earthquake

I listened to Earthquake for the first time in about a decade and it is mostly really enjoyable. It in much more entertaining than I remembered, probably because my musical tastes have evolved since I last listened to it.

It forms a nice trilogy with The Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure. The City theme is a typical 70s JW disaster theme - heavily rooted in both the style of the era and his background as a jazz musician. I love its robust rendition in the Main Title and its development from solo piano to full orchestra in The City Theme concert track. The City Sleeps is another awesome cue with a lovely melody that slowly builds to an incredibly satisfying epic crescendo. It is surely one of the best "resolution" cues I can think of. Miles On Wheels has a really cool 70s sound too.

So what do people here think of this score?

Also, are there any differences between the Varese and MCA releases? I have a copy of the Varese release and it seems to have a lot of clipping problems which is confirmed by the audio spectrum graph. I'm also hearing a bit of distortion at about 0:51 of track three. Does anyone else experience these audio issues?

Some folks really get into it. I've never been sold, myself. It's all right, but I enjoyed both Poseidon and Inferno more.

The film is very bad, but I enjoy the score quite a bit. Not quite as strong as INFERNO, but much better than the dire POSEIDON. "Miles on Wheels" is a kicker and a great funky companion piece to CINDERELLA LIBERTY.

Part of the Earthquake album do have their charm, mostly the jazzier and more straightforwardly dramatic orchestral material. When the music veers into the source music type pop music stylings of the times it sounds dated and quite cheesy. The City theme is a highlight for me and Miles on Wheels is pretty snazzy as well. And as others here have said it is (based on the album) the weakest of the disaster trilogy.

Screw memorable or hummable ... I love the mood in all these JW disaster movie scores. I also like the fact that they aren't fully orchestral and symphonic in style.

The film is cheesy but hardly very bad. THE PROPHECY is very bad, EARTHQUAKE is watchable.

Well, I've seen worse, that's true. But it's still the arch-example of films of that era that had lots of stars, but where everyone cancelled each other out and they had forgotten all about writing a decent script! Here are some more thoughts on film and score that I did over at FSM:

POSEIDON ADVENTURE and TOWERING INFERNO are better scores (my favourite is the former) but dat piano riff and brass pedal in the Main Title... Fuck. Wish it lasted forever.

0:43-48

Yeah the main title is a groovy piece, a kind of mix of pop and symphonic sensibilities, much like the main title of The Eiger Sanction.

I've discovered Towering Inferno because it was reissued as a digital download last year.

If they do the same for Earthquake, I will surely download it.

If my infos are right, this album was last reissued in 1990 by Varese Sarabande. Well, that's 25 years ago.

The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Eiger Sanction, Dracula, and Jaws II all really need to be re-issued on CD. JW has new fans all the time and all those CDs are long out of print

Maybe since Intrada recently issued a complete Jaws 4, they will work their way through the whole series? That would be awesome!

In fact, all those albums originally issued on MCA Records, and sometimes reissued by Varese Sarabande in the 90s, seems actually to be in a black hole.

Add The River, Born on the Fourth of July, Always, etc.

Wow I didn't realize The River had shot up so much in price on Amazon is $34.

BOT4J can be found for a penny though, and Always for $2.50

But then who can I brag to about owning all these 'rarities'? ;)

Anybody who cares. You can get your nuts off that you own the original releases. Some of us peasants would just like to own whatever next re-release or expansion they decide to sell. Until then, I have no shame to say I download what's long out of print. Including those five.

POSEIDON ADVENTURE is dire? :eh:

Oh yeah, I forget, you hate dissonance.

It's a shame really. A wasted opportunity to write a soaring theme, spent instead on mindless dissonant underscore. And worse, as you point out, not even totally symphonic. This was the beginning of the decline of film music. The praise for this score sickens me.

Nothing to do with dissonance. It's more that 90% of it is meandering, directionless suspense drones. A decent -- albeit dated -- love theme does not save it. It's probably my least favourite JW score.

But for what it's worth, I love the film! Lots of nostalgic sentiments towards it.

Wrong, we know KM is a dentist in Canada, his first name, and he has talked about his love life in Other Topics

Blume, TGP, and BloodBoal are the three biggest posters that reveal no personal information.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

Of course, the difference is that Blume and BB don't make it an issue at all, and TGP is always acting as if he's a big deal and then refusing to answer any followup questions. If you don't want to talk about it, don't bring it up, I say.....

I think there's a good deal about me known on here. The only thing I've never mentioned is my last name. Sure, I don't have any social media presence to share, but that's not the extent of "personal information!"

When the hell have I ever acted like I'm a big deal? Or is this another thing people take me more seriously on than they should?

There truly is nothing wrong with wanting to remain anonymous on a messageboard. I have no issue with it at all.

It's probably very easy to figure out who I am if you know me, just from my opinions, to say nothing of the other personal stuff I've mentioned. But since 99% of people who read or might read this site don't know me, I'd prefer to not complete the puzzle for them with my full name so that I can speak freely and not wonder if something is gonna come back to bite me in the ass.

Gul dern, son, first name, occupation, and province! He may as well have been given us all his Canadian social security number.

I believe TGP implied he's the guy who wrote the Skyrim music. That'd be cool if it's true, that guy's really talented and one artist whose albums I've never pirated. But TGP? Delusionsagrandeur.

Once again... when the fuck did I ever claim to be Jeremy Soule? Where are you people getting this shit?

Calm down. We can't all be talented.

Boy, you really took the grumpy thing personally huh? That didn't make me dislike you, but your pathetic and petty attempts at retribution are somewhat amusing. Keep dancing, miserable swine!

I don't have the time or the patience to read your back story to figure out who you really are. It's like walking in on season 5 of a once great show when the best writers were fired after three. Not worth the time watching reruns.

I agree with Suina!

Reveal yourself to us

And end this nice show of not-so-passive aggressive attempts at getting under my skin? You should know there's nothing more fun than watching some butthurt clown try to play keyboard warrior!

I'm not the self-aggrandizing pompous ass who believes his true identity is worth either knowing or hiding. I don't care either way, actually, because I don't believe you're important enough to know who you are. I'm not butthurt though I did have ghost chili salsa yesterday.
