The Force Awakens Score Details

I have wasted a bit too much time on SW7 sites. Makingstarwars has been accurate with most of its scoops. So, I would say it is likely, but obviously not certainly, true.

Has a John Williams score ever turned out to be a disappointment when he, essentially, worked to his own deadline?

We know what happens when he has no time to write (Chamber of Secrets) but his output is usually much more fragrant and textured when his deadlines are relaxed and he can refine his writing.

He's certainly never had a film score with a 10 month writing/recording schedule.

Wait, what?

"The previous rumors are indeed correct. It is important to note that while Ross is conducting, Williams wrote the vast majority of the music"

Why wouldn't he have written all of the music?

I am completely positive John Williams wrote and orchestrated 100% of all the music written so far.

But what about the music not written so far? What if the music written so far is only 70% of all the music in the movie?! :o

Boy golly gee, this sounds like Chamber of Secrets all over again. :(

I don't see why Williams wouldn't have written 100% of the music if he's going to attend all the recording sessions and is doing the majority of the conducting.

I wish it were 1985 or 1993. :(:(:(:(

It doesn't matter though. Williams is the master, far better than any modern hack could ever hope to be. But I haven't listened to any of his scores in so long, LOLOL! Isn't that crazy?

LOOKS LIKE OUR FIRST STOP ON THE WAY TO DISAPPOINTMENT IS FEAR!

John Williams has only written a majority of the music! :o

Next Stop: UNCERTAINTY!

Luckily for me I'm immune to that needy OCD BS then isn't it.

Really like these concepts so it'd be cool if this is accurate, but I'm gonna have to try not to fantasize about it too much in case it's completely wrong...

The site has been proven right time and time again so I wouldn't be too worried about this news being fake.

I think we were expecting some of what this article has stated, such as a theme for Rey and a First Order march. They seemed to have recorded a lot already. Although, I don't know how they can say Williams has topped himself without hearing the whole score. I have no doubt Williams will deliver a fine score, especially considering how long he's worked on it. I'm very curious about the "cantilena, an operatic piece, with sustained lyrics dragged out over the melody." Would that kind of be like Qui-Gon's Funeral? If it's tied to one of our OT heroes, surely Williams would have integrated his or her theme.

It's not an issue of fakeness, but of how equipped someone is to interpret things to accurately report on them.

(and if they can do so without editorializing with needless hyperbole)

That is a good point, but some things still come through as informative, such as the use of choir, a new march, a new theme for Rey, a new Jazz-styled piece. Nothing earth-shattering, but fun nonetheless.

Yeah, that's more what I meant. I admit that I can have a tendency to get dragged along by hyperbole and I don't want to go off and start turning this "gorgeous, most beautiful and operatic Star Wars music ever" into the heart of the score in my head when maybe it's really just a lovely, fleeting 30 second highlight of a cue that captured everyone's attention and actually has nothing to do with snow planet imagery. I've had times where I've had to readjust my assumptions and expectations upon hearing a score or watching a movie because the rumors were misguided and it's annoying and a silly thing to have to do.

Plus MakingStarWars may have real scoops but the guy running it isn't actually an insider and merely has friends who tell him things, or possibly they're friends of friends. So it's still like playing the telephone game, especially when describing music.

That's true.

Also, it might be best to add "RUMORED" to the thread title to avoid confusion.

Okie dokie. http://thecantina.starwars7news.com/index.php?threads/soundtrack-names.2944/

From my private instructor, who is a good friend of one of the musicians in the orchestra which is recording the soundtrack next week, I have received some interesting info from the score.

Apparently, there is a theme (for a person, place or thing (think Force Theme, Leia's theme etc.)) that appears throughout the score in three different variations. One is very bold, brave and sort of heroic, one is very mild and careful, and one is dark and written in a minor scale, leaning towards the feeling of Imperial March.

The last piece of the score is said to be Luke's theme, starting small and slowly building up - ending in a grandiose piece with the entire orchestra, before launching off into the familiar End Titles.

Of course, they only have codes for names, but my source recognizes much, including the main theme (duh), some of the attack music from the OT, and one interesting detail: Yoda's theme seem to be included in one of the pieces.

It'd be interesting if Williams withheld himself from using the Force theme except for little bits and pieces of it throughout the film (much like Arnold and the Bond theme for Casino Royale) but then, at the very end, you get to hear it in all its glory. Could prove to be quite magical.

Yeah, I realize that. Sorry, for some reason I thought the original post was saying Force theme, since that is what most of the Star Wars movies have ended with. I think the original poster on MakingStarWars meant the Force theme as well.

The musicians playing these scores are instructed not to talk about this kind of stuff with anyone. They risk losing their jobs by sharing this stuff. Which is more reason for me to not believe it.
