Much like last year when D2 Mastering revealed that the Deluxe Edition of The Abyss was coming before Varese announced it, they have done so again for Predator 2.

Soundtracks/Soundtrack Reissues 2014

Lalo Schifrin "Enter The Dragon"

Lalo Schifrin "Bullitt"

Jerry Goldsmith "The Blue Max"

Alan Silvestri "Predator 2"

I cannot WAIT for this - the score is really great but the OST was incomplete and incorrectly mastered. This is gonna be awesome!

Yup! Here are details on how flawed the OST mastering is:

When I first purchased this CD, something about it bothered me. It lacked space, and bass. I put it down to the possibility that the CD had been mastered in one of those short-lived spatialising tools such as RSS or QSound. I dragged the CD out recently, and this time I ran it through a phase-correlation meter, and saw massive phase error. The two channels are 180 degrees out of phase throughout the CD!
What this means is that when the left speaker is pushing out on a bass hit, the right is sucking in, which leads to sound cancelling out in mid-air! The upshot is that the mix sounds vague and centre-less, and unlistenable in headphones. I phase-reversed the right channel in SoundForge and presto, one sparkling and vibrant soundtrack... In simple terms, this is a flawed product spoilt by a school-boy error in mastering, and should be avoided unless you can rip it and phase-invert it. Otherwise sadly, it really is a cracking score. The end-titles are amazing...

It's definitely a cracking score - it really comes alive when the phasing is corrected. The album is quite tight and well arranged; I can't for the life of me remember what is actually missing from it.

Yikes, that's bad! Who the hell was the editor or mastering engineer for the original album?

Does anyone know if there's an easy and free way to visually show when a file has phase errors like these?

I was going to say Phasescope in Pro Tools, but that doesn't fit the definition of free! The best free method to spot the error is to use your ears.

I've never heard of another CD shipping with a channel (or both) out of phase.

Looking forward to an expanded Pred 2 as well!

i think the 'We are one' song from the lion king 2, has been released thrice(!) in three different albums with out of phase left-right channels, making it sound echoish.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Alan Silvestri
2 CDs
In the urban jungle of Los Angeles, detective-lieutenant Mike Harrigan’s (Danny Glover) police force is at war with drug lords and gangs. But just as Harrigan admits he’s losing the fight, one by one, gang lords are killed by a mysterious, fierce adversary with almost supernatural powers—the Predator. Before long, the vicious creature begins to hunt the hunters—Harrigan’s men. Now, Harrigan doesn’t just want to bring the creature in—he wants to bring it down in director Stephen Hopkins’ action-packed sequel!
Alan Silvestri’s score for the original Predator is one of the all-time classic action scores and one of his own very best. It was an instant classic when the film was released in 1987, though a soundtrack album never followed until we released it in 2003. 1990’s Predator 2 gave Silvestri an even bigger palette. He not only lived up to his first score but went beyond. Predator 2 is a master class in percussion and brass. The score is truly epic and has, for many years, been one of our most requested scores to bring back and expand. We now give Alan Silvestri’s Predator 2 the full Varèse Sarabande CD Club treatment is this 2CD Deluxe Edition.

Has anybody received theirs yet? Mine hasn't arrived.

According to an FSM poster, the track listing on the back of the CD case (and on Varese's website) is wrong?

Yup, the tray card is indeed wrong!

Here's the incorrect information relayed on the back tray card and website:

10. Danny Gets It (Extended Album Mix) (4:29)

11. Tunnel Chase (Extended Album Mix) (4:20)

12. This Is History (Extended Album Mix) (5:17)

13. Dem Bones (Album Mix) (6:40)

And here's the correct listing for what is actually on the CD.

10. Dem Bones (Album Mix) (4:29)

11. Danny Gets It (Extended Album Mix) (4:20)

12. Tunnel Chase (Extended Album Mix) (5:17)

13. This Is History (Extended Album Mix) (6:40)

Hopefully Varese will print and mail out fixed tray cards.

I don't really care about alternates section as much. It's not something I'll be revisiting a lot. But yeah, it would be nice to have correct tray.

Not that I'm going to picket outside Varese's offices or anything. Nah, there are better things to do. Music to enjoy. This kind of stuff. ;)

I've already heard it and it's an excellent expansion, kick-ass Silvestri action all the way.

The only thing that is SLIGHTLY jarring is the loudness spikes in some of the more action-packed moments.

And I mean the loudest bits, of which there are a couple. But it's hardly interfering with my enjoyment of those moments.

And I've never heard anything out of the ordinary with the original album. I've always loved the sound, actually. Maybe I have a rare copy that is correctly mastered?

Nah, I think you're just not paying attention enough. If you A/B the old vs new on a good pair of headphones, the difference will be apparent

Crikey, I have the first release of this on CD but admittedly haven't listened to it for many years (like plenty of other scores if I'm honest). I do remember it being a great score, but yes also remember that the sound on the release was 'so so'. Listening to those samples that Jay linked to on this thread, it sounds like a wholly different animal now. Rather tempted, but then again my other one on CD hasn't experienced the laser of a CD player for years so I'm keeping that in mind and probably won't shell out for another one.
