  1. I would take more The Incredibles sequels.. Toy Story? I think it should have ended at 3.
  2. Best Picture nominees ranked: The greats: 1. Anatomy of a Fall: fantastic performance and script that keeps you guessing until the end. Courtroom drama done well. 2. Poor Things: creative and full of memorable moments. Could have ended 20 minutes sooner, but the highs are very high, specially the main trio. 3. Holdovers: missed this kind of film. Shed a tear or two. 4. Oppenheimer: also lost steam for me in the last act (which was the last hour). Everything in the movie regarding the actual bomb is the bomb! But every time that Downey Jr character was on the screen, the movie lost me (not because of his performance, which is great, but that plotline was done much better in Amadeus. The movie would have benefited with the whole thing droped and a bigger focus on the bomb and the guilt that followed). 5. American Fiction: I looove Jeffrey Wright in this film! The satire thinks its smarter than it actually is, and you can kind of see that the director still has room to grow, but the familiar drama is great. 6. Zone of Interest: I still want to give a rewatch as I watched during TIFF, along with many others, so didn't cause the impact that I see from other people, even tho some scenes stuck with me. Also, it marks the one instance where a Mica Levi actually works in the film! The good: 7. Barbie: fun while in Barbieland, and bad when in the real world. Would have worked had stayed in Barbieland, with the only "real world" moment be with the Barbie maker in the end (kind like Lego the Movie). Speaking of which, that was a much better toy commercial that didn't even get a best animated nomination! How did this one get so much love? The dance scenes are so poorly directed (the opening of Ted 2 gives it a run for its money), and c'mon! Who though that Will Ferrel had any business being in here? Still, that production design! 8. Maestro: the conducting scenes are great, but the main plot was a little muddled and boring actually. Also, what went over Cooper's head to film the main conflict between the couple in a very distant shot where you can barely see the actor's face and expressions? Love Carey Mulligan in it tho! The "didn't work for me" 9. Past Lives: barely registered for me when I watched back in the summer. I remember liking the husband character. 10. Killers of the Flower Moon: now THIS really didn't work for me. The original idea was that the film was going to focus on the FBI, and that sounds much better than what we got. Focusing on the greed of men (that we saw plenty of time, and Scorsese did better in the past) may be the baffling choice. DiCaprio overacts and rightfully was snubbed, DeNiro plays DeNiro, and Gladstone is great with what she is given. It's funny that the movie seems to skip scenes where the interesting stuff is about to happen (like Mollie's journey to get investigators). What should have been nominated instead of these last 4: 1. Dungeon & Dragons: really, best adventure film IN YEARS! This movie is going to be LOVED in a few years! 2. Air: made me feel inspired to go back to work! Sad to see ignored in the Oscar, probably for being released in the begging of the year. 3. Godzilla Minus One: masterpiece where the drama scenes are even better than the Godzilla ones. 4. Guardians of the Galaxy 3: the best Bradley Cooper performance of the year. And the proper end chapter of MCU for me.
  3. My pick is Patrick Doyle. I still consider him overrated, but I use to really dislike this Harry Potter score (and how it abandoned Williams themes). My perception of him changed with “Charlitos Way” (his best score IMO.
  4. I would say the runner up is either Poor Things or Anatomy of A Fall. The latter will win best screenplay and the former did really well with the nominations, but yeah, Oppenheimer will win.
  5. I love Enchanted and like Disenchanted. A shame the later did not get its score released, as it sounds really really good in the film. The songs are very good, specially its instrumental arrangements. A shame Menken does not get more scoring assignments.
  6. George Clooney best film is the underrated The Ides of March. He hasn’t done any decent film since.
  7. I have and it is fantastic. Gripping all the way through! I recommend!
  8. It is undeniable that he is technically very talented, has a great eye for casting (maybe his best attribute) and knows how to set up stuff. The first act of his both Star Trek, Super 8, Force Awakens, MI3, Lost, all had fantastic set up. I still believe that TFA was the perfect movie to restart the franchise. The small details mentioned here (Max Von Sydow, C-3PO red arm) were irrelevant to the plot and do not detriment the film if never explained.
  9. Just watched Next goal wins yesterday at TIFF. The score is, as you described, almost non existent. There is a cue in the middle of the film that contains some nice exotic choir (a little bit like Soul Surfer), but lasts around 1 minute. The final game has a fine inspirational sport scoring, also with a bit of vocals. In total, the score doesn’t amount to more than 15 min. A suite should be enough. The movie by the way is TERRIBLE. I can’t believe it made it to the festival.

  11. This is part of the problem for me. One thing is have a complete film that can work by itself have a cliffhanger that will continue in the next film (Infinity war, Lord of the Rings and Dune pt1) however, when basic things like villain motivation don’t get explained and no plot gets its own ending is very frustrating. take infinity war for example.. the movie clearly needs Endgame to fill complete, however, Thor has his arc that gets completed, Thanos has a good resolution. Nothing close happens here. The film just ends (after again, a very long almost 3 hour runtime).
  12. I’ve watched yesterday and was surprisingly disappointed. First, all the conversation scenes were filmed so closed to the actors face that started getting really distracting. The humor didn’t work, there was one unnecessary murder scene that rubbed be off the wrong way and by the last hour (this movie is LONG) I stopped caring. Oh.. also, it follows the tradition of Fast X, Spiderverse where nothing gets resolved.
  13. Nice! Good to see Giacchino pairing with more "serious" composers. I like his franchise scores, but I think its time for him to tackle more mature projects, and I don't think J. J. Abrams, Colin Trevorrow, Brad Bird, and his other usual collaborators have it as much potential as Bayona and Gareth Edwards (btw.. has it been confirming whether or not he is composing Edwards next film?).
  14. Sin City is that movie for me. But I don't know how much he can be credited of faithfully adapting the novel.
  15. I’ve watched the movie yesterday in an advance screening here in Toronto, and Elfmans Batman theme gets a lot of play time (it kind of becomes the movies main theme once he enters the picture). A lot of direct quotes from the 89 score but also some cue arrangements. The movie is fine but nothing special unfortunately.
