I can't help but feel the Eminem single was a huge missed opportunity. I'm not much of a rap fan, but Eminem rapping over a James Horner backing track could've been something really special.

"southpaw"..I dunno. I thought it was the name of a dog

Southpaw is the normal stance for a left handed boxer. Right hand and foot are forward, lead with right jabs, followed with left cross hook.

In Rocky II, Rocky fights orthodox until the last round, when he switches back to southpaw to knock Apollo down and win.

Without even taking into account that this is one of Horner's final scores, I almost want to buy the album blind just to support Sony for that classy artwork revision.

Any idea if the two tracks on the song compilation feature any music not on the score CD?

Excellent question. But I have no idea, haven't got the access to the song album (at the moment at least). It might be the final track on the score album which runs about 85 seconds (A Quiet Moment...). Will try to ask around.

Fuqua dedicated the film to Horner's memory:

Also was moved and impressed to hear that Horner did this score for free, since he loved the film so much. Not something you see happen very often in this business.

So my copy arrived from Amazon....and does NOT have the "This album is dedicated to the memory of James Horner" on the cover. I feel a little let down by that!

After neglecting this score for 7 years, I listened to the OST album this week and was surprised by how much I really enjoyed it.  It's very different from what I typically expect to hear when I put on a Horner score... and I loved that about it!  The album really creates a nice mood that it sticks with the entire time, and the occasional Horner-isms that pop up from time to time make you smile.

I opened my physical CD edition, and found a nice 12 page booklet full of photos, as well as a nice note from Horner:

"A special thanks to both Antoine Fuqua and John Houlihan for working with me so closely, giving me the freedom to try out some pretty modern textures of music working with film, that other filmmakers might not have let me try...many thanks to you both,

James Horner"

That thank you is probably one of the last things he wrote (that got officially published somewhere)

I thought the version with the dedication was only for the digital version of the OST (for example, it's what you see on itunes, spotify, amazon MP3, etc etc) but the physical CD was only pressed with the original booklet?
