Have you seen E.T. 1982 version on the big screen?

I'm posting this because I just caught a theatrical screening today on my local Cinemark (they're screening some digitized classics films from time to time. Empire of the Sun, Saving Private Ryan and Raiders of the Lost Ark were among them over the past year).

Remember when I said I cried when I watched the video from the Eiffel Tower fireworks with the E.T.'s finale music? Well, guess what? I fucking cried a whole lot this time (there, I said it again!!!). No kidding! It's like watching it for the first time.

Ok, it was only in 2K resolution and the screen was not THAT big, but it was still big. Even so, what an experience! I'll carry this for the rest of my life, that's for sure!

One funny thing: it's the 1982 version (original special effects, Mary's terrorist line, agents with guns), but lines from the doctors' scene at the end are still from the 2002 version... go figure!

I have in 1986 and i repeat it often: the music that stuck was the whole forest chase at the beginning (and subsequent versions of that motif). It's of such ambigious nature - foreboding and sinister - that i later wondered why i preferred it over the hum-along stuff.

Of course I saw it. It was Spielberg and the hype surrounding E.T. was unbelievable. Back then Spielberg was called a wunderkind. Spielberg and E.T. were all the media talked about.

It's one of my all time favourite cues. Performance and recording wise it's my absolute favourite.

I saw it in 1982. My parents took me and they loved it, but not me, I had nightmares the days after. E.T. was a creepy looking dude, and he haunted my thoughts so much that i refused to re-watch the film until I was a lot older.

It wouldn't surprise me if I was the only kid in the theater that held hands before the eyes whenever he was on screen.

Steven Spielberg asked me back in 1981 to see some of the work I could do in photographing the film. We did a screentest with the ET model they had at that point. I tried to persuade him that shooting in anamorphic was the way to go, but Allan Daviau convinced him otherwise because it'd be cheaper. Stingy Steven we used to call him.

Here's a shot from the screentest.

I only saw the 2002 version.

I was 2 when E.T. was released.

Now that I think of it, the first time I saw the original in widescreen was 2 years ago on the Bluray!!

All the previous times were either on VHS (full screen), or the 2002 version on DVD. (we didn't get the theatrical version here on DVD)

And still I haven't seen in widescreen the really authentic original, since when i viewed the Bluray i saw it with the 5.1 mix, which is substantially altered comparing to the original mix, but I didnt' know it!

I was only 7.

I'm sure you were already playing video games in which you had to kill people at that age.

You couldn't be further from the truth. The first type of games I was into were old-school adventures like King's Quest, Police Quest, the LucasArts adventures, Sega platformers and others of the non-violent type. But then Doom came out and I changed into something else.

Yes,it was an outing organized by my school.

Unfortunately, it was in English (I really don't understand this decision), I was 8.

Maybe they were thinking that at 8, we will not notice.

People in the eighties were soooo dumb...

1. How do I embed a youtube video in my post?

Simply paste the URL into your post, and the board's software will do the work for you!

NOTE that sometimes you have to strip out random junk in the URL for it to work.

For example, if your URL looks like this:

Change it to be only this:

Also note that redirect sites such as "youtu.be" WILL NOT WORK, and neither will URLs with an HTTPS. You MUST use the official "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=" format.

Pro tip: If you're in Chrome, paste the youtube URL in with SHIFT-CTRL-V instead of CTRL-V. Otherwise, it posts an a link instead of the raw text the boards needs to see to convert to an embed.

Hey, maybe it's thanks to that film that you speak English so well now!

Bespin, I bet your first English words were "E.T. Phone Home"

I haven't.

But I would love to.

Did see the 2002 version

When I saw the 2002 version, the 35mm print was so beat up that it ruined the experience... and I also didn't care much for the new SFX and extended scenes, anyway. The good thing is that I could finally buy the sountrack CD, as teh 1996 edition was never released around here.

No, I learned "Son of a bitch" and "dickhead".

The only time I've seen ET in cinemas was March of 2002, for the 2002 re-release.

I'd happily go see a screening of the original. I'd love to go to a live to projection concert of it!

I saw E.T. during its theatrical release in the theaters. I was just a kid so the same age as the characters and felt like a sibling and was completely enthralled. The ending was incredibly exciting with its bike chase and goodbye sequence. The acting was so strong and believable making the emotional ending even more engaging. At the time, Spielberg was known for slow burn movies with a big exciting finish. For example, Jaws and Close Encounters have these huge spectacle endings so even though the film felt slow to me, I anticipated a big finish and it exceeded my high expectations. I also vividly recall the first time we get the full theme during the flying sequence how the room was shaking with sonics and the ending timpani hits with the rainbow...just stunning. Everyone remained through the end credit piano music just bathed in good music and great story telling.

So guess who I bumped into on Monday at a local cafe. None other than Drew Barrymore (gertie) was sitting in the corner of the cafe. I held the door open for her as she left and got a that very distinctive smile from her. She'll always be Gertie, but that was very cool to see her in person:

I can't remember. Never as a child in the theatre, as I was only 5 when it came out. But I might have when the 2002 version came out. Either way, as it was one of the main analyses in my master thesis, I can't even count the number of times I've seen it over the years -- first on VHS and TV, then later on DVD (the huge 'gift box' edition). Never upgraded to BR.

Why doesn't mine embed? :conf:

Ok, it's fixed now. Thanks for the tip Jay. But this was the first time that a simple Ctrl+V and changing https:// to http:// didn't work. Strange.

If you are using the mobile view, you don't have to worry about it; Since it's not a rich-text-editor, a normal paste of the youtube URL will work perfectly fine.

Yes of course I saw the original in the cinema, as I had seen all the previous Spielberg films starting from Jaws. I remember I laughed so hard during the Yoda scene that my glasses fell off and I missed E.T. and Elliot's flight "over the moon" while I was searching for them... The bicycle chase and goodbye scene were a delight to see, but not nearly as amazing as the CE3K finale a few years back.

Most kids from non-English speaking countries are able to understand movies like E.T. in their original language. The exception are, of course, the few countries or areas where people grow up under the dictatorship of dubbing.

People in the eighties were soooo dumb...

Now that is a dumb thing to say.

I have a distinct memory from primary school of the teacher asking everyone in the class to raise their hand if they had been to the cinema to see E.T.

Only four people out of a class of about 30 did not put their hand up. I was one of the four.

:sadwavey:

My sister had the Michael Jackson E.T. record, however.

I was only 2 years old in the summer of 1982 when ET came out.

My earliest movie memories are the 80s re-releases of Pinnochio and Dumbo, and then Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Back To The Future II, and Batman in 1989.
