  1. I'm going to rely on all of the experts around here to give me the best information on buying the ROTJ 2 Disc Special Edition Soundtrack from 1997. I'm looking for the Edition that came with the laser etched discs (that looked like the 2nd Death Star) and has the booklet attached to the black colored CD sleeve (not a plastic jewel case). I have already purchased it once at Amazon (used) and ended up with the edition that has a plastic (normal) jewel case with the removable booklet and the CD's that are designed with the Rebel Alliance logo. If I understand correctly, there is also a 3rd version that comes with the 1997 special edition poster in a slimline case. Amazon currently lists two different entries for the soundtrack (that I can find). The first is listed as a slimline edition (ASIN: B000003G8I) and says its original release date was March 11, 1997. The other (ASIN: B000003G91) states that it is from August 26,1997 (I'm guessing that it is the one with the Rebel Alliance logo??). Does anyone have any idea of which one of these will get me the item I'm looking before as described in the beginning of this post? Thanks!!
  2. This would pertain to the "etc" portion of the topic. I think he can still do a nice fanfare. It is the minor themes where his composing style has taken a downturn (although I'm still a huge fan). Consider The Empire Strikes Back score vs any of the prequel scores. Williams always creates about 3 new major themes for each SW fan (even that was somewhat thin with the prequels), but the reason that the older scores are so well loved is because of all of the memorable minor themes he created that were 1. Memorable and 2.Lyrical almost in the same sense that a "major theme" would be. Consider ESB (for major themes, we'll say "Yoda", "Imperial March" and "Han & Leia" are the majors. When you look at the film, consider 1. The music from the AT At battle 2.Hyperspace (used twice in the movie) 3.Cloud City's theme 4.The music used when the Falcon is preparing to escape from the slug. All of these are recognizable to certain parts of the movie and could almost be developed into concert suites themselves. I find this severely lacking in the prequels. Maybe the inspiration for that many new themes is no longer there. Say what you will about Lucas and his musical editing, but maybe he chopped everything up so much because so much of the new material sounds like other Williams themes from Hook, or any other 1990's JW score.
  3. I knew something didn't seem right when I typed Tyranus' name. Thanks for the correction and insight. I am still just not convinced that Lucas gave a good enough explanation on the DVD commentary. Maybe he'll elaborate in a future interview.
  4. From another thread: The director's commentary from the end of the ROTJ DVD: LUCAS: As he (Anakin) joins the force, he is able to retain his original identity. It's because of Obi-wan and Yoda, who learned how to do that: how to join the force at will and then retain your identity. But it was his identity as he was when he died, as Anakin Skywalker. OK, so if we are to believe that Anakin "died" when he became Vader, this would have to mean that Count Dooku "died" when he became Darth Tyranous. Yet, everyone still calls him Count Dooku (no "that name no longer has any meaning for me" from Dooku). I still think it makes no sense. This idea of a separate "soul" being created when one becomes a sith just doesn't hold water once you really look at examples like Dooku.
  5. I'm starting to wonder if Lucasfilm finally went after Millenniumfalcon.com (the site that posted all of the pictures of the changes to the DVD) . I haven't been able to access the site for a few days now. Has anyone else been able to go there recently.
  6. Well, I can accept a "nice" looking Old Anakin easier than I can accept a young Anakin next to an old Obi Wan and Yoda. The only other possible scenario would be to make all 3 of them young, but this wouldn't make sense unless they were to re-shoot all of Guiness's parts with Ewen every time the Obi Wan Ghost makes an appearance (which would be stupid, in my opinion). Of the 3 options, I think the original one works best.
  7. I still don't get it, thougth. If Anakin was redeemed before death = good, I don't understand why he would look young as a ghost. When OBI wan and Yoda died in a "good" state, they didn't revert to a young appearance. George somehow seems to gloss over the fact that Anakin did exist as an old man "good" Jedi (albeit briefly) just like OBi and Yoda. The other thing that bothers me about the ghost thing to begin with is that I always understood it to be something that only a few Jedi knew how to do and Vader seemed surprised when OBI did it in ANH (stepping on the cape in confustion, etc). So when did he learn it??. Makes no sense.
  8. I'm sure we're not done seeing changes...there are always the Hi-Def or Blu-Ray versions still to come in the next few years, I'm sure
  9. Could the difference be due to the fact that the older recordings were done analog and the newer done digitally. One other thought..perhaps they are placing the microphones differently these days than in the late 70's. I mean, when you hear the clarity of the violins in that section of Episode IV where they view the docked Millenium Falcon (right before Leia says, "you came in that thing, you're braver than I thought"), nothing in the new movies can compare (not talking about the musical composition itself, although I do have issues with that as well, just the clarity of the instruments in the symphony)
  10. I know I'm probably not the first to ask these questions, so if there are answers on these boards, feel free to direct me to those threads. 1.)Did JW compose a different opening to SW Ep 2 than was heard in the actual movie. I find it hard to believe that he reused the opening from The Phantom Menace. I always loved how each SW opened differently, so EP 2 was a real dissapointment. 2.) Has JW ever commented on using EPisode 1 music in the Geonosis Arena scene 3.)Has anyone ever noticed that the music at the end of the Quidditch match in HP and the Chamber of Secrets is almost exactly the same as the Speeder chase scene in SW Ep 2. (Does JW have a little too much on his plate that he has to quote himself that exactly?) 4.) Does anyone share my dissapointment in the sound quality of the Episode 1 and 2 recordings vs 4,5 and 6. The OT soundtracks were so much more "live" and vibrant sounding. It just seems that they don't mic the instruments the same way that they used to. Thanks.
